People are the ones that make America great!!! winking flowerforyou

Im glad you disagree with my views..Thats what makes America great!!!

You haven't been to Florida!!!! Its not mandatory and lets keep it that way. This post was started by a story of Obama stating we need to make sure our children speak Spanish. Our children and their parents have the right to chose their own path. It should be mandatory for immigrants to learn English. I have been as far to the other side of Africa and when you are out in other countries you better try to have aliitle knowledge of their language because its hard to find someone who speaks or understands English. I like Obama..

I agree but that should be an individual choice..The immigrants who come here ( legal ones and for that matter illegal ones ) have the opportunity to learn the English language but many chose not to. So why make me or my child learn Spanish if we choose not to.

Why not Spanish and German and French, the kid would get far in life.

Nobody "makes" anyone learn spanish, over exageration?

so incorrect in so many levels, I live in Florida, I am glad to be multi-lingual so this has no real effect on me, so your point is???

Our kids have the opportunity to study any language they want. Why make it Spanish, why not German/ french/ Greek????

Agreed!

English will undoubtedly remain the common melting pot language. AND we should welcome the opportunity to learn and use a vast array of other languages. This is, in a sense, part of the unique legacy that all Americans have together.

Let's not let fritter away this extraordinary legacy on the hit-and-run advice of fear-filled hate-mongers.

disagree with your double entendre of Florida (I apologize if I am wrong) but your reference to Florida was in regards to spanish speaking individuals.

There are so many languages spoken in Florida and in this world, whats the big deal?

I'd rather know for myself what is being said than rely on someone to translate (jmo)

I'm sorry I guess i took it out of contest..Obama, the Democratic junior senator from Illinois, said, “Understand this: Instead of worrying about whether immigrants can learn English ... you need to make sure your child can speak Spanish....I still believe an immigrant should learn English. My ancestors came from Germany and Poland(go ahead I heard them all) and they learned to speak it out of respect for the country and their fellow Americans...

This was in response to the many requesting that 'we' should be English speaking only. "He agrees immigrants should speak English and went on to say:"

Senator Obama tells a Georgia audience that American children should learn to speak Spanish: “Instead of worrying about whether immigrants can learn English — they’ll learn English — you need to make sure your child can speak Spanish.” (polijamblog.polijam.com/?p=1564)

Is what was said, link above; also I am sure he picked the spanish language out of the blue as he went on to say, "Every child should speak more than one language."

'Our'ancestors learned English not out of respect but out of necessity. (jmo)

Having had the great luck to learn several languages, I want to say that it is not only a pleasure, but has enabled me to do many wonderful things that would not otherwise have been possible.

I know that there are a lot of bad language teachers are out there. So not everyone has had a positive experience.

Spanish is one of the easiest languages in the world to learn. Even President Bush learned some, and it is clear that he enjoys speaking it.

But there are a lot of other fine languages: Russian, Chinese, Arabic, French...all promise a rich variety of ways to see the world and to communicate.

I too don't think that it must be mandatory -- and Obama did not suggest that it should be despite the strange tone of outrage of the OP -- but I do think that all parents owe it to their kids to encourage them to learn multiple languages, and that includes learning to speak and write in English well.

I think what is going on here is that Americans are upset that many Latin folks don't want to learn English. I am not saying all but there are communities where only Spanish is spoken.

I live in Miami and the majority of the people only speak Spanish. You can't order a sandwich without having the cashier speak in Spanish to you.

Of course this would be a shock for Americans who have been living here for many many generations and as their ancestors came they had to learn English to get through life.

Today it doesn't seem like that this is happening as many Spanish speaking folks don't even put in the effort to try to speak English.

Although I am a European my vote or opinion probably doesn't count, but I must agree that one should have options of various languages to learn from, yet it maybe necessary at this rate that if the ongoing rising population of Latin folks come into this country that the importance of Spanish is envitable and may have to become a priority to learn in this country unless immigration laws will somehow resolve the dispute.

A great book to read is by Pat Buchanon called "Emergency State". It talks about the issue alot.

Either way I think that those who come into the country should at least try to learn English and those who are born in this country should also put more effort in learning a language. Knowledge goes far and the more you know the better off you are.

Having been to and lived in other countries, I can only say that if you ever visit another country, at least try to learn a little of the language.

The natives will appreciate it.

Higher institutions used to teach Latin and Greek, these were required courses.

They are what all of the European languages are based on.

Learning Latin and Greek makes it easier to learn any European language.

Cool! I've always wondered how close to a spoken language it is, or whether it might be more similar to an Asian language. I'd love to hear your thoughts on it.

Thanks

Hi, Voile!

I've been dashing about the globe and writing up a storm -- and doing some intensive Dahn yoga since we were last in touch. It's a good life and great to be back in touch!
