Both my daughters left the hospital with their ears pierced. done by the
pediatrician himself. Culture is something that its inherited to your
children, same as religion and your favorite sports team.

True, all of it is a matter of choice, like most things in life. But you
don't wait until your child is an adult to baptize it (if you are
catholic), waiting for him/her to decide. You teach your children about
religion as soon as you can. Same with your culture. What is socially
accepted in one culture, might seem barbaric in another. It is a custom
in my culture, to pierce a baby girl ears when they are very young. And
following the proper procedures and using the right equipment it is
safe. As for the earrings being unsafe, there are special earrings for
newborn babies, that would be difficult if not impossible for a kid to
take it off. It would be stupid to put gold loops on babies ears.

In Lori's case: back when you and I were little, maybe they didn't have
the little gun they use now, and probaly the person that pierced your
ears used the common method of sterilizing a needle, I don't know.
That's probably what caused the infection. I am allergic to non-gold or
silver earrings, can't use any fantasy in my ears because it gets
infected. My sister used to wear really heavy earrings and it stretched
the hole to the point were it cut through. But she had a very simple
surgery done and all is new again. Maybe you can ask your regular Dr
about it.

Autumn, just make sure you get earrings that are made with surgical
material, or gold or silver. It would be safe. Get some antibacterial
ointment and put it on and turn the earrings so they are not stuck she
should be fine in a few days. She would look precious.

All books have touched me in very different ways, and have shaped me to
be the person I am now.

The Alchemist - Paolo Coelho
The Jungle Book - Rudyard Kippling
Outlander - Diana Gabaldon
The Major Writings of Nichiren Daishonin, specially "The 8 Winds"

Many, many more...

Jane & Buttons: I connect through my computer at work most of the day
(right now I am home), and I don't have a web cam in the office, and I

To Voileazur: this is one of the best and most rational opinions that I
have read on this matter in tha last few months.

People do forget to take both sides of the coin and both sides of the
story.

Effectively enforcing security at the borders is difficult, but not
impossible. It hasn't been done because the same authorities that are
charged with the responsibility to do so, are primarily involved in the
trasegation of illegal aliens into the US. They are the first
beneficiaries in a long chain that reaches the tops of the highest
corporations that holds the reins of economic influence.

In order to stop illegal immigration, the house needs to be cleaned out
first. If those allowing the trespassers are not taken out of office and
made an example of, it would be very difficult to stop the whole circle.

JMHO.
