I don't understand either. And I really don't understand why they can call each other the N word and white people cannot. For one thing did thay not bury that word last year so it had no racial connection.

I have had to go over and over this subject, the n word as you call it not used in the same context or with the same infliction when black folks use it to each other, There is no comparison and only a prejudice white person would want to use it in reference to black folks anyway. That word should NOT be used ever by white folks even when given permission by black folks, as I have, to use it, it is disrespectful, there is not way around it.

I understand what your saying here, yet at the same time, saying that white folks should never say it is racism in itself. Personally, I hate the work, no matter who uses it, but saying it's okay for one race to use it and not another..is just that...racism.

Issues in the South? It's a dangerous stereotype to think the South houses more issues.Having lived in both Chicago and NY for years, I can tell you racism exists everywhere in equal measures...just served up with a different accent!

You are right, it is everywhere, but there is a struggle still going on in the south. It is like stepping back 100 years when you go there, in regards to race relations. The only civility there is in the public places. South is the only place in our country where a black person best not enter a certain part of town after business hours or else.......... I have lived there and I wanted out fast.

I think the n word is damaging period, regardless of the color of the person wielding it. You have to respect the person you are speaking to as well as demand respect from the rest of the world, and even humor can be used to render the wrong palatable. When I dated a woman I NEVER let her sister (who I liked very well) call me a dyke, for instance.

Well I disagree. There are alot of white people that refer to themselves as the N word. It does not represent dark skinned people anymore it represents a class of people. The gangster. And by the way it is just a word derived from niger a little place in Africa. So get over it. I have been called redneck wow it hurts me so much when people call me names. Get a life.

That is not true, I am white and if I refer to myself as white trash, it is not racist.

there is no getting away from it in my opinion...people's feelings of racial imbalance one of the last remaining prejusism in this world...like take my town of pincourt for example...a town that my grandfather was mayor of and helped to put on the map....too long ago this was not a city of diversified people..it was french and english..then like a tital wave there was a building boom here..and more people of different races began to live here...when i saw the first black family moving in here..i thought to myself that this was wonderful..finally this town is changing..then more black families started to move in..once again,wonderful..but one day i was in the mall and i heard a french lady talking about this and in not to much of a possitive way either,,in fact i would describe it as very insulting..in french i told her that she should have more compassion for others..and walked away...

the point to all this is that i really thought that my liile town was very excepting to everyone..but i know that racism is everywhere..but you cant hold everyone accountable for the acts of a few ignorant a-holes..

keep it real,,
kol..

i should mention that i was generalizing..maybe the lady tht you bumped into was just ...a meanie.

There are many black folks who feel this way also about the damage of the word. I agree with them. But if they choose to use it it is a word given to them by default.

That's awful...I'm happy to say that has not been my experience here, and I speak from dating a black man for half of last year. I didn't know what to expect moving here and I must say I have been pleasantly surprised.

What I say is grow a pair. Life is not fair. Indians were slaves as well and we killed them and took their land you don't see them holding a big grudge. To me they had it worse then the african american group. And most people have black in their family. Not all americans are american we are all from somewhere else. And beond that what about the Jews. Come on get over it. It did not happen to you. Who the hell cares.

It is not for you to judge the suffering of others. I have seen for myself the racism perpetrated against black folks to this day. I would be one pissed off black person if I had to suffer through what I have seen and yet they are the bigger person and blow it off. I don't know how they do it.
I'm not judging anyone. Just saying that the people that are racist themselves are the only ones who get offended by it. I have alot of african american friends and they have no problem with it. My mother was born in Germany with my Grandparents does that mean because I am white and live here that I must have some how been apart of that or my family was a part of that. Grow up. Life is life make the best of it.

White Trash and the N word are not even close in context.

So is white trash, redneck, dyke, etc. To me it does not nullify my personal responsibility in my choices with use of language. Also - I really liked the word one person used, she might have just been a "meanie" lol - yep every place has THOSE too! :)

Maybe it's me, but I'm failing to see the racism here. Just because one of you is African American and one not, doesn't make a rude incident racist. Or maybe I missed something?

why do us "humane" race refer to african amercians as ( they, them, black people)? we are all the same! race will always be an issue all over the world! but why is it its always african americans i here bout why are they the topic always? why not why people call the chinese gooks? or mexicans beaners? or the jewish kiks? racism happens all over the world and it should stop but it will never happen unless everyone works together.....i hope one day we can
