Topic: Why Democrats will win big in 08.... | |
---|---|
"It's the economy stupid." Bill Cliton said of his presidential rival George Bush in 1992. Cliton won in a landslide that year. 16 years later, in a similar situation, Democrats are bound to win in landslide as well.
Democrats will have to undo any damage done by fiscally stupid Republicans in monitoring the house mortage sector, skyrocking oil prices, the falling dollar, and lower industrial production. Take a look at the current stock exchange in this article. The unemployment rate jumps to 5%, with a payroll increase that's the weakest since August 2003. Nasdaq tumbles after an Intel downgrade. Wendy's sales decline. The Labor Department reported this morning that nonfarm payrolls rose by a mere 18,000 in December 2007, far fewer than economists had expected. It was the weakest month-to-month change since August 2003. Stocks slumped on the grim report, pulled back from earlier lows after the Federal Reserve announced that it will conduct two $30 billion credit auctions later this month and then continued to fall. At 12:45 p.m. ET, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell below 13,000, down 183 points, or 1.4%, to 12,873. The Nasdaq Composite Index plunged 68 points, or 2.6%, to 2,534, partly on a downgrade of tech bellwether Intel (INTC, news, msgs). The Standard & Poor's 500 Index had lost 24 points, or 1.6%, to 1,423. Light, sweet crude oil pulled back from the $100 level this morning, after crossing it for a second time on Thursday. Oil was down $1.11 to $98.07 a barrel. The consensus estimate was for a gain of 58,000 jobs last month, although analysts' estimates had ranged broadly, with some reaching as high as 85,000 new jobs. Nonfarm payrolls were revised upward to a gain of 115,000 in November from a previous reading of a gain of 94,000. The unemployment rate jumped to 5.0%, up from the 4.7% in November, and up from 4.4% in December 2006. A recession coming? "These jobs data are the strongest evidence so far that the economic expansion is grinding to a halt," Peter Morici, professor at the University of Maryland School of Business and former chief economist at the U.S. International Trade Commission, wrote in a note to clients this morning. "Slow jobs growth, along with the shortages of mortgage and business credit, declining home prices and residential construction, and falling industrial production, indicate the risk of a recession for 2008 is high," Morici continued. Morici expects the Fed to "aggressively cut interest rates to combat the U.S. slowdown," but warns that "the Federal Reserve is in crisis, because its mix of policies addresses an old-style recession." |

They promised if elected in 06 that gas prices would go down. Where are the prices at now demo boy. They lie to get elected and if the stupid masses believe their crap, they will be elected. All they want to do is go after Bush. Democrats say and do anything to get elected. They use peoples misfortune to get votes. If you want power so bad you will do or say anything you are very dangerous. The dems are damn dangerous.

I think if anything history shows it is difficult to keep the White House after two terms. I feel right now there is a major political shift occurring in each party as well as in the nation as a whole. For the past 25 years we have seen for the most part a Republican upswing; but patterns and trends change and it looks like it is time for a Democratic upswing now.

This country is ready for a change! and a big one! sorry all of you diehard republicans, but you just can't win this one!

It doesn't matter if you vote dem or rep. Either way they will do whatever they like with your tax money.
I think Albert Einstein once quoted if you keep voting for the same thing and expect different results, we call that insanity! We need someone who truly does what he promises! |

I dont think it's so much the person not getting done what they say they are going to do, the problem is getting the right votes to complete the task.
Also knowing who to go to, to get what you want done is another problem. I work in an office that deals with property taxes, you would be surprised at how many people just don't understand, or do not care to understand how the system works! My office takes a lot of heat for this. |

^ I agree. I work in government myself and often it seems it is easier for people to simply bash or blame government than look for the answer and yes there are times when government is to blame and acted wrongly. But very few issues can be fixed with a magic wand and instantly be better and it is difficult to convey that at times.

thank you! I agree with every thing you say also. we the people need to unite, quit bickering over silly ****, and fight for what we want. the only problem with that though, is, we have so many different views, its hard to find a happy medium.
I brought this topic up to a co-worker, and just between her and I, we argued about everything. |

Democrats are gay! That is all!

Some are... why does that have anything to do with the polictics though?
Some republicans are gay too! Some things just need left out of the way we thing. Its the same thing for religion, who the hell cares what religion someone is, it doesnt have any effect on how they are as a person! |

I am just funnin.
Look, let me say this before I begin...I am a Republican. Now, with that out of the way, let me address this statement. If the Democrats win, then you better hope John Edwards is your guy. Obama and Hillary will f*ck things up, and you can quote me on that. I don't like any of these candidates but if I had to choose it would be Edwards. On the Republican side, well, Huckabee is the guy. Now, I don't like any of the Republican candidates either, but if I had to choose one guy it would be Huckabee. Now, with all this said, let's be realistic. No matter who gets in the White House, none of the economical issues will get fixed the way "the people" want it to be. Think I am lying? Read all the candidates ideas to fix the economy and then listen to economists talk about these plans......cause I have yet to hear any economist say that one of the candidates has a plan that is worth a damn. Plus, even if a Democrat were to win the Presidency, it does not guarantee that things will get better quickly...like was mentioned earlier, it will take a long damn time. What has to happen is that all the politicians get on the same page and try to fix one problem at a time. But like you said Andrea, there are so many agendas going on that hardly anything will get fixed. |

You sound smart but you fail to realize the swing of the political pendulum is not as synchronous as you might think. The low performace ratings of congress bare out America's dissatisfaction with the Democrates. The Democratic majority in the Senate cannot get any thinner. There is certainly an opportunity and a possibility for the Republicans to retake the Senate in '08, but structural factors argue against the Republicans. There are 33 Senate seats contested in 2008. Of these, 21 are held by Republicans and 12 by Democrats. Simple numbers - the Republicans have a lot more at risk, and will be playing defense. The Democrats have many more opportunities to take seats than Republicans. Advantage Democrats. This leads to an obvious conclusion. The only way to ensure divided government beyond 2008, is to elect a Republican President in 2008. We will need a Republican President in 2008 to maintain a divided government state. To quote Thomas Jefferson... Divided we stand, united we fall. |
