Yeehaaa!! The baby's born!!
My granddaughter Emilia arrived in rather a hurry and was born just after 4 this morning. Because it suddenly went quite fast there was no time to go to hospital. There was no medical reason for hospital, and she wanted to deliver at home. But the practical reasons for going there, being a gurney from ambulance can't easily be taken up and down in case of an emergency, meant she would have to deliver in the living room and thus have a bed there or deliver on the table. Plus the living room cannot be heated well enough for a delivery. So she got what she wanted after all: a home delivery in her own bed  (normal in The Netherlands) They'd already elevated the bed weeks ago, just in case. (This is required) They chose to not have visitors the first 3 days so I'm guessing Tuesday is when I get to see my grandchild!  |

I hope my girl is finally sleeping now as she hasn't been able to sleep the entire night since it started around 10 and got more serious after midnight. Li'l Emilia was also deep asleep just now after 6x drinking milk from mummy :) The maternity assistant arrived too late to help during delivery, but my son in law took over and did all that needed to be done to help out both the midwife and my daughter. And she said he did a great job! Good thing they did the course for that :) They have a full-time maternity assistant for a week, so they're all well taken care of. |

Aw, congratulations, Crystal! That’s wonderful news! I’m so happy for you! Have you picked out your granny name yet? What will she call you? Thank you so much! I've seen a few vids in the meantime. I think one was taken shortly after birth, Emilia on my daughter's chest. That had me crying, so sweet!! And no, no name, normally it's just "oma" unless the child comes up with something he/she associates with the grandparent(s). She could call me "oma crystal" since I love crystals and have so many, hihi. |

Yes, it is normal :) Always has been, for as long as I know of, even when my mother had to give birth at the time. I guess mostly because natural home delivery is also normal here and the entire care system to support that is very well set up. Experienced & professional midwives and maternity assistants, a certain time off from work which is mandatory. Maternity leave is a total of 16 weeks -with salary. Mandatory to stop working at least 4 weeks before the due date but you can also stop 6 weeks before that (not more). The rest is after delivery :) And if the baby arrives early you have more time off after delivery. You ALWAYS have 16 weeks. And since more recent years -although for longer than a decade now- fathers also get to take more time off to be able to spend with their offspring. For instance a day a week. A daddy-day. But first there's a week time off work when a man's (or woman's) partner delivers a child. The additional time a partner can take off now is without his boss paying for it but he/she will then get a benefit from government to cover those hours so he/she does get income. All this stuff is legally taken care of and goes for everyone. We do not have the BS that you first have to work x amount of time in order to be get this. |

We have a very good social welfare and healthcare system, but the last few decades it's going down the tubes fast. And healthcare is costing a small fortune a month now. Nevertheless, it is still good, and certainly when it comes to the entire home-birthing & delivery thing. |

At least you don't have to 'dump' your wee one at a daycare centre when only a barely 3 months old! But having at least 10 weeks is already great! More than many in the world have. To help things along they implemented the daddy and/or partner time off. Which is not the paternity leave but after that. Additional time off. There is a max. nr of hours set for that. But it allows a man (partner) to take a daddy day or daddy afternoon or whatever. |
