What does this term actually mean and do women actually act upon it? I've asked because though used often, reading through profiles most women are after serious relationships; this tag suggests otherwise.

I do think some women mean they miss or want intimacy with someone they are in a relationship with. They just don't realize it looks like they want a hook-up.

Most women who use that term are fake or scammers.. They use it to lure us poor guys into their web of deceit... mainly because they really don't understand that term and us poor guys think it's an invitation to a hook up or one night stand or just plain raw sex .. ha ha !!!!

I believe it's a euphemism for a sexual encounter, but it is open for misinterpretation in my opinion, maybe that is why it is used by some.

It means a sexual encounter. Like Duttoneer says, it could be misinterpreted, especially on this site with so many non native speakers of English. They may not understand that it's not about cuddling etc. which is also intimate, but sex. It could be confused with romantic intimacy which is not necessarily sex.

The "Intimate Encounter", i.e. "Sexual Encounter" was WILDLY popular and pervasive among ALL socioeconomic groups from the "Sexual Revolution" through the 1970s and quite early 1980s, especially at rural like college towns of Kirksville, Missouri, home of Truman State University.....The Student Health Clinic passed out BC pills like Halloween Candy....there was hardly a prophylactic in the entire town ....guy did not have to take a girl out more than once....BUT ....Then came AIDS & Herpes... Sooo...today .... who really wants to go through a night of changing prophylactic 6-12 times

To me, an intimate encounter, is firstly, an encounter meaning a chance or arranged meeting between persons that may only take place on a one off occasion. Secondly, intimate is when those persons touch intimately, e.g. kissing, fondling, sexual stimulation, Some women and most men fantasise about such an event, and it can satisfy urges. But it is often difficult to arrange.
