High school gym class. How did it work for you?

I think there are a lot of stories to tell.

When I went into 7th grade, that was high school. The gym teacher was out of the military.

During the few weeks that I attended high school before dropping out as a 9th grade freshman, I didn't participate in gym activities. Myself and the couple of others sitting out loitered around in the gym during that period. One memorable incident that I experienced, was when one of the others sitting out pulled a joint out of his pocket and tried to convince me to hold onto it. I declined.

In 8th grade (High School) the Gym teacher was also
the English teacher, he also happened to be one of those hideously attractive human beings that young girls went gaga for. I was raised in California but this was Idaho, a really different country for me..they had corporal punishment which meant the teacher could whack you if they wanted to. Mr. Lutero, the hunk, soon learned that the female portion of his classes was perfectly willing to commit mayhem if it meant garnering his attention. My BFF and I were incorrigible and constantly spoke out of turn, we giggled and had a good time, Mr. Lutero hardly had to call us to the front of the class to get the paddle applied, we RAN up there ;-) So, after a while he simply ordered us to the Principal's office to get whacked by the bus driver who was NOT that attractive and had a heavy hand. So Mr. Lutero was smart, too ;-) |

When I went into 7th grade, that was high school. The gym teacher was out of the military. Oooh... that brings back memories, haha. We had an ex military dude in 2nd class of secondary school for PE. He was a total A-hole. Looked sexy though which was great at first, until we experienced his 'drill sergeant' routine. Then we didn't like him so much anymore. He was such an a-hole that at some point a pupil (not from my class) deliberately made him trip and he ripped his Achilles heel. If memory serves he needed surgery. That was a major event as such things didn't normally happen at my school. Not here, and not in those days either. In general I hated PE!! I was never good at it, not interested in it, and still am not into sports. The only thing I liked during PE was hockey. But we mostly had to do baseball which I totally hated. |

Oh and in one year we mostly did softball, both indoors and outdoors. I think that's what you US people call football?
With a round bat, a glove, and a ball that ain't at all soft but rock-hard. If you'd get it against your head you'd have a concussion or be dead. It should've been called "killer ball" instead I cannot begin to tell you how much I hated that!! Worse than baseball even, hihi. |

7th grade...
Liked softball, wrestling, gymnastics and basketball but my favorite was always dodgeball. Didn't like track or volleyball. By 9th grade the gym teacher was the school coach and gym class became too intense. The heavy discipline needed to create sports 'stars' took all the fun out of it and the jocks ruled the school. I wasn't interested in all that. I basically put in my 40 minutes and participated as little as possible. In 2 short years I went from "A" grade to "C" grade. I still can't stand the 'jock' mindset. |

Since I was in marching band I didnt have to do gym.. lol

Just remembered...In my junior year I was a 'bad boy', a smoker and a 'head'.
During gym class for my gymnastics grade I pressed out an Iron Cross on the rings and held it for a full 5 minutes but I messed up my dismount. Since nobody up to that point (including gymnastics jocks) had ever done that, it blew everyone away. I got a "B+" for that grade. Sudden;y, I started getting respect from the jocks but I didn't care. My friends laughed, said I showed those jocks. I was pretty proud. Someone like me topping the jocks was 'divine justice'. |

Since I was in marching band I didnt have to do gym.. lol I wish we'd had that choice!! An easy one to make, hihi. We worked long hard hours in the heat, rain and cold.. it was harder than normal gym and just as hard as being in some other sport.. especially carrying a tuba.. lol |

I have been in a marching time for a short while when I was about 10. Not part of school. I was going to have a drum but I quit before I got that far. Basically because my sister quit. I didn't want to go there by myself. |

I wouldn't trade any of that time and kinda wish I could do it again. |

One gym teacher in high school was a fat guy. How he became a gym teacher, I'll never know. I think he favored all the boys.

I was on the girls track team, which was a joke, but we got to go to track meets to compete with other high schools and it was a chance to check out that schools cute boys. Lol

I think I did pretty well at floor hockey, which we didn't do very often because it only happened when it was raining outside.

From 7th to 12th grade, I only had two female gym teachers. One of those I liked. She was very fair in her grading. As long as you do something physical in class, you will pass with at least a B.

Oh, I had one too!! Not in secondary school, but the school after that. She was really cool. Maybe it's naturally healthier and better to have a female PE teach for teenage girls and female adolescents. But then they'd have to employ another teacher. |
