When someone you don't know or barely know assigns you a pet name or endearment, does get under your skin?I'm not talking about when an elderly person refers to you as Dear...probably because they've forgotten your name.I'm not talking about the lady at the register or DMV who calls everyone Sugar...probably to avoid using the word Ma'am.To me Baby, Sugar, Sweetheart and Darling, and the like, are endearments reserved for family, dearest friends and intimate partners. I guess to me their use is more of a right to be earned. What say you?

aint no big deal babe. people gonna do what they gonna do.

laugh The truest thing ever said.

I don't care what I'm called.
So long, as I'm not called late for supper.

(referencing seen from Zoolander)

But what if your name IS Baby? And someone calls you Susan?

Would you be all like ,"My name is not Susan! You should call me Baby!"

(yes, I also referenced a Whitney Houston song ...lol)

Well, if your parents named you " Baby" I think once you reach a appropriate age you have the right to smack them in the face.

Same if they named you after a car.. which seems to be popular now a days. But problem is while the " Escalade" may be a popular car now.. 40 years from now Its a relic .. your name may as well be " model T"

I don't use babe,baby,sweetie,horny.
However, I would use beautiful, if I thought she is,pretty, adorable, dear, depending on her profile pic and how good her written articulation is.
Now ladies, would you be offended if I called you pretty, beautiful, adorable ?

Actually yes -esp if you don't know me - no offense but it sounds as though you are using a line.

This came up the other day for me. I was in a gas station and the guy behind the counter said have a good day sweetheart. I wasn't offended and wouldn't have thought about it until topics like this come up throughout time. I still wasn't offended because of context and how he said it.

Many times things are cultural and depends on geographic

I would not have been offended by that either. It's a generic name thrown out in a friendly manner. I will never fault friendly. flowerforyou

Show of hands; who is from the southern states?

Don't come here if these names twist yur tvvt'ss... I use hun for women I see often at the store, or I use ma'am regardless of age if I don't know them, sometimes dear..

I also can't understand the shallowness of a lot of you

Therein lies the difference - if I lived in the South & someone called me hun or honey or sugar & didn't know me, I wouldn't be offended, but living in the East "baby" is used as a pick-up line. Guys will come onto you in a bar & call you baby, baby, baby & knowing they don't mean it, I find it offense because it implies an intimacy that's not there. If I've been dating someone for awhile & they call me honey, baby or dear I don't mind.

I've had a few guys give endearments online, but never in person. To me as older woman that is a red flag, especially from someone who doesn't know me from Adam. I don't know where you are at, but I would be cautious of any stranger saying that.

In the work place no...

If delivered by a guy you do not know that makes it obvious he looks upon you are a snack....no'

Otherwise, it's just a word and not something to get bent over. If you are dealing with people and or trying to date and something like this bothers you, you will be forever frustrated...

Take a chill "babe"

I’m so used to pet names it doesn’t bother me. I grew up being called FairyFay and Pixie Dust. Baby or Sweetheart are a step up. tongue2

if you don't know how exactly to approach somoene , you use the common way, hi sweety and so on.. calling me by my name ,means you know me . they try to be Nice not rude. when you get yourself in some places , you have to cope your mind with their world and language. if you take it personnaly that's means you have a problem, fix it before going too far.

Agreed!
