I tend to believe we are a culture of 'victimhood' and 'offense'. I think I consciously avoid looking for more things to put on a list of what 'offends' me, regional slang or terms of endearment are not on that list. I Try to stick to being offended, mostly, by those things which have the PURPOSE to offend or belittle.

hi I've not read all the replies, the fonts are just too tiny, i think the issue lies with you, and your feelings and opinions..
though many people feel the same, many millions also do not, they just use those sayings, as regular as Hi, good day etc it's just being polite, in their beliefs & upbringings all around the UK for example, they have hundreds of different greetings and sayings... they can literally use the word love, without even knowing you in a store, how are you love? you alright love,? etc the word love... gets thrown around so much, that many people (men cough) who say it don't even feel it... but it's just the way they talk up north etc. or other places around the world sugar, i think is mainly American, howdy sugar, howdy honey... In parts of Australia its very common to use the C swear word to greet people GDay C..... instead of G Day mate, and to them it's normal I'd rather be called dear, or love, than c... it's just how you like it, your preference is those things are from close ones, that is nice too imo, others are just being themslves too. though you might not like it, not much we can do as everyone is just being themselves, have nice day, bye. many people hate that saying ...have a nice day... as for many its just something to say as they are leaving..... and some people do actually mean it... but it's so common in the USA... that it can be either way. the world is full of different people, better to be grateful we find ones saying nicer things, rather than not. imo. bye. |

You have to have the permission of familiarity to call someone something other than their names, not just anyone, or strangers, or even people you know.
There is a very intelligent lady, who is also a babe, but I wouldn't call her that unless we were already very close, and I had permission of familiarity, and was allowed to. Even super models, who are obviously babes, and who trade in being a babe, are not impressed by being called babe. Even with someone you are extremely intimate with, it may be wrong to be call them babe, eg. your B,D, S and M mistress (while tied up). I think calling a pig in a movie babe is also very wrong. Pigs have rights too. |

When someone you don't know or barely know assigns you a pet name or endearment, does get under your skin? I'm not talking about when an elderly person refers to you as Dear...probably because they've forgotten your name. I'm not talking about the lady at the register or DMV who calls everyone Sugar...probably to avoid using the word Ma'am. To me Baby, Sugar, Sweetheart and Darling, and the like, are endearments reserved for family, dearest friends and intimate partners. I guess to me their use is more of a right to be earned. What say you?  absolutely ...used to get under my skin ... and I would tell them that to  now ...I have leaned to not respond to them ... or just say not interested... or have fun with it ... I have found there is one word ... to say to me ... and I will roll over on my back for them... to scratch my tummy LMFAO |
