Topic: Naive Cliches | |

perhaps, part of what makes a cliche so popular is the naive idealism implied
two of my favorites are 'it can't get any worse' 'all that matters is love/all you need is love' what are some cliches that struck you as the most illogical/unrealistic? |

What's the worst that can happen?

The ones I DISLIKE the most, are those that seem to have been specifically designed as combination put-downs, and absolutions for the person saying them.
Such as "if you really wanted (whatever the person is despairing at having lost), you would have made it happen the way you wanted it." The message in there is both "I'm not going to give you any sympathy at all for the pain you are in," and "the fact that you didn't get what you want, proves you are a lazy schlub." |

The most unrealistic, are the old classics, like
"You can achieve anything you really put your mind to!!" |
|
|
|
"What could possibly go wrong?" and every time I hear it I think EVERYTHING!!!

"You don't know what you have, until it's gone" Does this even make sense... I've known what I had and appreciated it, it's being gone just reminds me how much I made it a point to appreciate it |

I have mixed feelings about
"It is what it is." |

No Pain / No Gain
Implies that you must suffer to reap benefits Its God's Will Implies that you know what God's will is concerning me Don't Judge a Book by its Cover I've read some very bad books with bad covers and some really good books with really good covers. People are not books. |

The one I like the most is "You can't have it all." Oh, but yes, you could, but you'd have to be a rich and evil domineering tyrant to get it.
I am particularly partial to "It is what it is." I mean, it either is what it is or it's not. We're either looking at it correctly or have some ill-conceived notions about what it is. |

Some of the phrases people say without even realizing what they are saying is another thing that really gets me.
Especially... Let me be Honest with You... Honestly, tho... To Be Honest,... In all Honesty... Proclaiming that you are now going to be honest with me implies that up until you made the proclamation you were not being honest. If you feel the need to proclaim your honesty, it implies that normally, you lie. |

I have more than few but I also am careful with these people...
My reply to them is always, ..PRACTICE WHAT YOU PREACH Perhaps I LOOK LIKE A FOOL ??.. Nay... Live your truth. Express your words and affections. Share your enthusiasm. Take action towards your dreams. Walk your talk. Dance and sing to your music. Embrace your blessings. Make today worth remembering. And above all Laugh until it hurts |
