but you chose the name
karmafury cool with me but do you use a name given to you by someone else for identity purposes ---------------------- your question What would be correct? The name a people have for themselves or the name given by others. are you a self are you a person |

i never said they did
but that does not mean they are not i have yet to hear a cow call itself a cow maybe it should be called a moo |

Parental name isn't the same as a stranger giving me a name.
Should you for instance decide that for some reason my name is George you will wait a long time for a response. Because that is not my name even though you may have chosen it to be. A 'people's' name comes from it's culture and history (it's parents) and defines said people to themselves. |
Be very careful with your response. Because I can use it against your starting arguement.

Using the term Eskimo where I live is a derogatory term, no matter what some dictionary or website has to say about it.

Thank you Kid.

So the name of "Eskimo" was given to them by white people?
Kat |
Yes it was Kat.
please do
and true it may take a long time to get a response but in time that response will come and maybe even come long after its deemed inappropriate i could give an example of a people it was done with and at times still goes on as wrong as it may be -------------------------- but as an example of our discussion concerning eskimo or Inuit or vice versa i would almost bet more would understand the world eskimo as related to the far north american than would understand the word inuit regardless of what they call themselves |
Then by your logic the giving of a name to a nation by others is fine and makes it fact.
Well, I would understand the word Inuit had I been taught that. I was taught Eskimo, so that is what I know. I will make a conscience effort to remember that.
Another proof that the white people push themselves and their ways on a people. Kat |
it is a matter of translation
i am not of eskimo (inuit) decent thus the langauge i use uses the name eskimo and if that translates to inuit cool but it is still eskimo to me |
The fact remains that the world doesn't stand still no matter how much some people might resist change. Change IS the only constant. Sometimes it takes a litle bit of education, sometimes a revolution.

Kat ---------------------------- most peoples do not just white people that is a racist remark although i do not think you meant it as one |

so true kid

Eskimo does not translate to Inuit.
Eskimo is a derogatory term whereas Inuit means the same as most native names for their own people mean........'the people'. However again I ask if by your logic the re-naming of a nation by others makes it alright and a fact. |
No I am not a racist. What I meant by that remark was it most likely was "the white" people that named them that. I am sure that they would not just change their own names? No more so than the Germans, or Cherokee Indians, or etc, etc.
