This is a personal favorite of mine and
I thought I'd share it here for those of
you who haven't seen it before. Bonny's
post regarding the passing of her friend
made me think of it once again...

Do not stand at my grave and weep
by Mary Frye

Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there; I do not sleep.

I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.

I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn’s rain.

When you awaken in the morning’s hush
I am the swift uplifting rush

Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.

Do not stand at my grave and cry.
I am not there. I did not die.

Yes!!! It is one of mine also.

There is another similar also...

I can't think of it in context...but it is similar, other than the subject is spoken of, in the next room.

this verse is very well known but have always found it
remarkably moving. and it captures in a very few
words a lot of how i feel about death and dying. it is
used a lot at memorial services understandably.

as i recall there was a hubub at one time about
versions, authorship and copyright of this poem...but
i *believe* that Mary Frye is recognized now as
the legitimate original author.

because it is reprinted so much on this side of the pond, some refer to it as the most popular poem in America! I've since googled it again and found that the version I posted is slightly different from the one published and attributed to Frye in the 1930s...apparently, she wrote it for a friend and it got copied, modified and republished countless times...

There is another author Karin-Aleida Schmidt-Vorrink who claims independently authoring a poem much like Frye's in 1981 but definitive authorship of the various versions is probably impossible due to the variations....

I have never been one to mourn a death in my adult years. I think the reality of war at 17 might play a factor in that.

I choose now to celebtate the life. Yes, there is the vacany of presence, but those you love always leave us memories to fill this void when it comes to the forefront. The "brothers", and yes, today "sisters", who share conflict with you, enter your life as strangers, but in a short time become a most important part of it. You have to displace your feelings or die yourself inside.

Remember our children who serve this great country. Support our troops! Question our government!
