Topic: Mental illness is not an excuse for bad behaviour. | |

You killed someone because you thought they were an alien and God/Satan told you to do it? Oh, you're mentally ill! No jail time for you!
You killed someone who was trying to rape you? Well, the rapist didn't have a weapon... Enjoy your time behind bars. I'm so sick of these injustices!!! And before you make assumptions, I do know quite a lot about mental illness. I took a Social Service Worker program in College and mental illness along with addiction was something discussed often. |

I believe our justice system is not perfect, I don't know a system that is
I am glad we have the ability to try to keep improving it that being said,, I think state of mind does matter in WHERE we should send people if someone truly hasn't the mental or emotional capacity to understand right and wrong, they should be away from others, but not necessarily along with those who understand and get pleasure from hurting others some belong with cold hearted viscious humans others belong where they are not only safe from harming others but safe from being harmed by viscious humans for something out of their control as to the rapist, I do think people should have to prove the circumstances of discharging a weapon that kills someone unarmed just 'claiming' there was a just reason should not be enough,,, |

Not everyone who has a mental illness has an addiction. Not everyone who has an addiction has a mental illness.
Odds are good that you know someone who has a mental illness. Can you tell who does and who doesn't just by looking at them? I'm glad you took a Social Service Worker program. Now, go sign up for some NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) courses and hear firsthand from some people living with mental illness what life is like for them. |

If you're so versed in mental illness Mindfreak then you'd know the very first and foremost qualifier for a mental incompetency ruling is patient distress. The subject must have necessarily been clearly distressed for quite some time prior to committing any crime and folks just like you kept walking on right by saying it's not their problem. Until predictably he did something that is a problem for you.
That's why he gets a free pass. As for the rape thing, you're not a qualified, trained police officer so that's why you get prosecuted for vigilanteism. |

I think the field of psychology will die out, as 'normal' and 'mentally ill' will become too controversial and judgmental of labels,
everyone thinks and behaves what is 'normal' for them,, after all,, |

Yeah, and not just that, judge and jury as well. Guess she did college program on that too? Not really material for a dating-site. Maybe join a forum on "I don't agree with this government" or get anger management counselling. |

At least if I suddenly started receiving messages from God/Satan/aliens I would know there was something wrong with me and check myself into CAMH.

At least if I suddenly started receiving messages from God/Satan/aliens I would know there was something wrong with me and check myself into CAMH. And I'm sure that all those that have had this happen jumped right on the phone and had themselves committed....NOT All I can say is please educate yourself before passing judge and jury on a situation. One that has only had a class on mental illness has no idea............. |

hmmmm... i don't know what she does or doesn't know, but what shes saying here does make some sense... we shouldn't say "oh, they have a mental deficiency, so lets not convict them", laws are laws... doesn't matter if someone doesn't understand the crime, the crime was committed... i agree with her, don't let mental illness get in the way...

I have read about plenty of criminal cases in the USA in which a criminal's attorney pleaded for leniency because the criminal had some sort of mood disorder, such as bipolar disorder. As it turns out, a bipolar disorder doesn't cause anyone to commit crime.
