racism is alive and well, it persists in the 'hearts' of people who have some advantage in continuing to act upon it
And speaking of racism . . . from Investor's Business Daily: [Al]Sharpton has made a career of racial incitement. He once called Jews "diamond merchants" and described whites moving businesses into Harlem as "interlopers."
He helped incite three days of anti-Semitic rioting in 1991 in the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn, turning a tragic traffic accident into a riot where two people died and more than 100 were wounded. Then there was Freddy's Fashion Mart in Harlem in 1995, subject to the Sharpton campaign to drive out "interlopers." To scare the Jewish owner away, Sharpton turned a tenant-landlord dispute into a racial conflict, resulting in arson of the store and seven deaths. And what did Congressman Charles Rangel have to say about the Tea Party? It is the same group we faced in the South with those white crackers and the dogs and the police.
(Rangel quote source) Yep, as long as black racists can get away with spewing their racism, racism will be alive and well. really? not for naught, but Rangels actual quote was “It is the same group we faced in the South with those white crackers and the dogs and the police. ',,,referring to the groups of the south, called cracker in that time because of the crack of their whip(Authority),,, do you believe him using that term eliminates the reality of how those people he used the word about treated others? or that his individual choice of word was the REASON for them to choose to treat others that way? ,,,interesting,,, racism as bigotry and prejudice, will be 'alive' on an individual level because people will always form correlations and prejudices based upon their PERSONAL experiences but INSTITUTIONAL racism, the racial discrepancies in our economic institution, our educational institution , our institution of JUSTICE,, is a matter that can be corrected and greatly reduced,, if people would only have the guts to AKNWOLEDGE, DISCUSS, and REVIEW with honesty what has lead to them in the first place and address those issues that persist INSTITUTIONALLY in those institutions made predominately of INDIVIDUALS that propogate and bleed their own racist perceptions into their policies and decisions,,, |

Tawana Brawley didn't have assailants. Her story was a hoax. Yet, it is true that Brawley's enablers were adults. Well said and true! |

He used a racial slur to describe white Americans, and you have no objection to him doing so? A black person making a racial slur against white people or non-black people is as bad as a white person making a racial slur against black people. If you were rally opposed to racism, then you'd be opposed to both kinds of racial slurs, not just to the latter one. |

Are you saying you agree that the Tea Party are racists like the ones in the old south? Also how can you expect change at the institutional level when you can't even admit you have some of the biggest racists among you. |

yes, referring to someones unopposed authority is JUST AS OFFENSIVE to me as referring to someones substandard human value NOT you lost me...no idea what that answer was about. Hope it wasn't in response to Tea Party which is probably the least racist group in the country composed of blacks, whites and hispanics wanting smaller government and more freedom. |

Im agreeing that many don't care how they look and many have an indifference to humanity as did the 'crackers' of the sixties who used their fire hoses, pepper spray, and other techniques to intimidate and oppress others change can happen at the institutional level in SPITE of having individuals who speak words deemed 'racist' here is the difference I don't expect elimination at the INDIVIDUAL level, so Im not prone to discussing it or thinking much about it I do expect people to have PERSONAL experiences, (Which IM sure Rangel had with the 'crackers' of his time) that lead to PERSONAL Perspectives of things I don't expect that 'personal perspective' to be so absolute as to define the way they implement policy though when they are a part of any INSTITUTION or job/career holding power over peoples lives and livelihoods |

I find it hypocritical for a person to complain about any kind of racism if that person also claims that racism isn't absolutely wrong.
Now, I'll return to the main topic of this thread. Three 15-year old black boys savagely beat up a 13-year-old white boy. If the races of the assailants and the victim were reversed, would anyone be claiming that the assailants were motivated by race? |

well, I guess Rangel and others have a different perspective of what 'taking America BACK' might refer to,,, I would suggest you visit a Tea Party website or go to a rally and see for yourself rather then listen to propaganda from Obama or Rangel. There are many prominent blacks and hispanics in the Tea Party. Senator Cruz is one that comes to mind. He is Mexican I believe and wouldn't be hanging with white racists LOL |

I am from Philadelphia, and my first thoughts are that these are the types of kids who will grow up to be adult drug dealers and wind up fire bombing a whole city block trying to get the guy who snitched,. I am also from Phila., and that is not an unreasonable scenario. |

If the races of the assailants and the victim were reversed, would anyone be claiming that the assailants were motivated by race? NOT IF ITS BEEN ESTABLISHED That the motivation was the victim being a 'snitch',,,, and I can certainly complain about INSTITUTIONAL Racism without getting into a semantic and futile debate about the general 'morality' of racism in its VERY BROAD definition from making correlations to race , as in assuming someone with brown skin is black,,,, to making character/talent assumptions about race, as in assuming a white person cant dance or being surprised when they can to profiling and shooting someone that made us feel 'scared' just because of our implicit racial association between their race and their danger,,, the latter is the only one that gives me great concern,, the former seem to me to be a quite natural process of the human mind to draw conclusions and correlations from ones PERSONAL EXPERIENCES,,,that have no real impact upon anyone but the observer with the perception,,, |

Wonder if you would have interest if you heard Jesse Jackson was the president of the org. Food for thought. |

I can certainly complain about INSTITUTIONAL Racism without getting into a semantic and futile debate about the general 'morality' of racism in its VERY BROAD definition
How can institutional racism be wrong and other forms of racism not be wrong? Was it wrong for Al Sharpton to use racist commentary to encourage blacks in Harlem and Brooklyn to engage in racist activities that resulted in people dying? Was it wrong for Congressman Rangel to recently use a racial slur against whites? |
