Always cross-examine...to be sure what is said

comes from God.

:heart::heart::heart:

But MorningSong, that goes against what you've been saying.

You keep saying that only the Holy Ghost can interpret things for you.

I've had God's Law since I was born.
I thank him for my gifts and trust in Him. Don't think otherwise...

The Holy Spirit INDWELLING all believers

will let all believers know ,if a Word being preached is

coming from God,or not.

Regardless, it is still always good to go to God' Word and

double check anyway.....if only just to confirm God's Word

being preached....or not being preached.

Jesus said, "My sheep KNOW my voice,and the voice of a

stranger they will NOT follow."

........................

Peterpan...God's laws are written on the tablets of our hearts

only when we become born again, not when we are physically

born.

Jesus said, "You MUST be born again."

Flesh and blood cannot enter the Kingdom of God, PeterPan.flowerforyou

Whatever gifts you were born with ,God has even greater gifts

in store for you, when you become born again.

And PeterPan... we will also bear the fruits of the Spirit

when we are born again.....especially as we grow more and more

in the Lord.

ps.....the Fact that You Already Trust in God is Good....and I

Trust God Will Lead You the Rest of the Way, in Knowing All of

God's Truth .

Romans 2
New International Version (NIV)

Romans 2
God’s Righteous Judgment
1 You, therefore, have no excuse, you who pass judgment on someone else, for at whatever point you judge another, you are condemning yourself, because you who pass judgment do the same things. 2 Now we know that God’s judgment against those who do such things is based on truth. 3 So when you, a mere human being, pass judgment on them and yet do the same things, do you think you will escape God’s judgment? 4 Or do you show contempt for the riches of his kindness, forbearance and patience, not realizing that God’s kindness is intended to lead you to repentance?
5 But because of your stubbornness and your unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against yourself for the day of God’s wrath, when his righteous judgment will be revealed. 6 God “will repay each person according to what they have done.”[a] 7 To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor and immortality, he will give eternal life. 8 But for those who are self-seeking and who reject the truth and follow evil, there will be wrath and anger. 9 There will be trouble and distress for every human being who does evil: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile; 10 but glory, honor and peace for everyone who does good: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile. 11 For God does not show favoritism.

12 All who sin apart from the law will also perish apart from the law, and all who sin under the law will be judged by the law. 13 For it is not those who hear the law who are righteous in God’s sight, but it is those who obey the law who will be declared righteous. 14 (Indeed, when Gentiles, who do not have the law, do by nature things required by the law, they are a law for themselves, even though they do not have the law. 15 They show that the requirements of the law are written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts sometimes accusing them and at other times even defending them.) 16 This will take place on the day when God judges people’s secrets through Jesus Christ, as my gospel declares.

The Jews and the Law
17 Now you, if you call yourself a Jew; if you rely on the law and boast in God; 18 if you know his will and approve of what is superior because you are instructed by the law; 19 if you are convinced that you are a guide for the blind, a light for those who are in the dark, 20 an instructor of the foolish, a teacher of little children, because you have in the law the embodiment of knowledge and truth— 21 you, then, who teach others, do you not teach yourself? You who preach against stealing, do you steal? 22 You who say that people should not commit adultery, do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you rob temples? 23 You who boast in the law, do you dishonor God by breaking the law? 24 As it is written: “God’s name is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you.”
25 Circumcision has value if you observe the law, but if you break the law, you have become as though you had not been circumcised. 26 So then, if those who are not circumcised keep the law’s requirements, will they not be regarded as though they were circumcised? 27 The one who is not circumcised physically and yet obeys the law will condemn you who, even though you have the[c] written code and circumcision, are a lawbreaker.

28 A person is not a Jew who is one only outwardly, nor is circumcision merely outward and physical. 29 No, a person is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is circumcision of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the written code. Such a person’s praise is not from other people, but from God.

Again, somewho who does not have the law can't and won't meet man's arbitrary "requirements" of being "born again". Yet somehow people would like to refuse this.

John 10
The Good Shepherd and His Sheep

1 “I tell you the truth, anyone who sneaks over the wall of a sheepfold, rather than going through the gate, must surely be a thief and a robber!

2 But the one who enters through the gate is the shepherd of the sheep.

3 The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep recognize his voice and come to him. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.

4 After he has gathered his own flock, he walks ahead of them, and they follow him because they know his voice.

5 They won’t follow a stranger; they will run from him because they don’t know his voice.”

6 Those who heard Jesus use this illustration didn’t understand what he meant,

7 so he explained it to them: “I tell you the truth, I am the gate for the sheep.

8 All who came before me[a] were thieves and robbers. But the true sheep did not listen to them.

9 Yes, I am the gate. Those who come in through me will be saved. They will come and go freely and will find good pastures.

10 The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life.

11 “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd sacrifices his life for the sheep.

12 A hired hand will run when he sees a wolf coming. He will abandon the sheep because they don’t belong to him and he isn’t their shepherd. And so the wolf attacks them and scatters the flock.

13 The hired hand runs away because he’s working only for the money and doesn’t really care about the sheep.

14 “I am the good shepherd; I know my own sheep, and they know me,

15 just as my Father knows me and I know the Father. So I sacrifice my life for the sheep.

16 I have other sheep, too, that are not in this sheepfold. I must bring them also. They will listen to my voice, and there will be one flock with one shepherd.

17 “The Father loves me because I sacrifice my life so I may take it back again.

18 No one can take my life from me. I sacrifice it voluntarily. For I have the authority to lay it down when I want to and also to take it up again. For this is what my Father has commanded.”

19 When he said these things, the people[c] were again divided in their opinions about him.

20 Some said, “He’s demon possessed and out of his mind. Why listen to a man like that?”

21 Others said, “This doesn’t sound like a man possessed by a demon! Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?”

Jesus Claims to Be the Son of God

22 It was now winter, and Jesus was in Jerusalem at the time of Hanukkah, the Festival of Dedication.

23 He was in the Temple, walking through the section known as Solomon’s Colonnade.

24 The people surrounded him and asked, “How long are you going to keep us in suspense? If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly.”

25 Jesus replied, “I have already told you, and you don’t believe me. The proof is the work I do in my Father’s name.

26 But you don’t believe me because you are not my sheep.

27 My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.

28 I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one can snatch them away from me,

29 for my Father has given them to me, and he is more powerful than anyone else.[d] No one can snatch them from the Father’s hand.

30 The Father and I are one.”

31 Once again the people picked up stones to kill him.

32 Jesus said, “At my Father’s direction I have done many good works. For which one are you going to stone me?”

33 They replied, “We’re stoning you not for any good work, but for blasphemy! You, a mere man, claim to be God.”

34 Jesus replied, “It is written in your own Scriptures[e] that God said to certain leaders of the people, ‘I say, you are gods!’[f]

35 And you know that the Scriptures cannot be altered. So if those people who received God’s message were called ‘gods,’

36 why do you call it blasphemy when I say, ‘I am the Son of God’? After all, the Father set me apart and sent me into the world.

37 Don’t believe me unless I carry out my Father’s work.

38 But if I do his work, believe in the evidence of the miraculous works I have done, even if you don’t believe me. Then you will know and understand that the Father is in me, and I am in the Father.”

39 Once again they tried to arrest him, but he got away and left them.

40 He went beyond the Jordan River near the place where John was first baptizing and stayed there awhile.

41 And many followed him. “John didn’t perform miraculous signs,” they remarked to one another, “but everything he said about this man has come true.”

42 And many who were there believed in Jesus.

I would have prefered if you had addressed Romans 2 which contradicts your position of only born-again believers having God's law written upon the hearts,

Now I'll leave you with some verses:

Matthew 15:1-20
New International Version (NIV)

Matthew 15
That Which Defiles
1 Then some Pharisees and teachers of the law came to Jesus from Jerusalem and asked, 2 “Why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? They don’t wash their hands before they eat!”
3 Jesus replied, “And why do you break the command of God for the sake of your tradition? 4 For God said, ‘Honor your father and mother’ and ‘Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death.’ 5 But you say that if anyone declares that what might have been used to help their father or mother is ‘devoted to God,’ 6 they are not to ‘honor their father or mother’ with it. Thus you nullify the word of God for the sake of your tradition. 7 You hypocrites! Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you:

8 “‘These people honor me with their lips,
but their hearts are far from me.
9 They worship me in vain;
their teachings are merely human rules.’

10 Jesus called the crowd to him and said, “Listen and understand. 11 What goes into someone’s mouth does not defile them, but what comes out of their mouth, that is what defiles them.”

12 Then the disciples came to him and asked, “Do you know that the Pharisees were offended when they heard this?”

13 He replied, “Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted will be pulled up by the roots. 14 Leave them; they are blind guides.
If the blind lead the blind, both will fall into a pit.”

15 Peter said, “Explain the parable to us.”

16 “Are you still so dull?” Jesus asked them. 17 “Don’t you see that whatever enters the mouth goes into the stomach and then out of the body? 18 But the things that come out of a person’s mouth come from the heart, and these defile them. 19 For out of the heart come evil thoughts—murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander. 20 These are what defile a person; but eating with unwashed hands does not defile them.”

2 Timothy 4:2-4
New International Version (NIV)

2 Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction. 3 For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. 4 They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.

Sorry, the Bible cannot be infallible. I have shown why on page 1.

I gave 4 examples as evidence against the "infallible word of God" doctrine. How am I to take that? Did Yeshua lie about Moses?

Every man has the law of God written on their hearts by nature.
Read Romans 1 before reading Romans 2.

Men know by nature. From the beginning all men have conscience of God, as mentioned in Romans 1.

Romans 1:
Gospel Exalted

1, Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated unto the gospel of God,
2, (Which he had promised afore by his prophets in the holy scriptures,)
3, Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh;
4, And declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead:
5, By whom we have received grace and apostleship, for obedience to the faith among all nations, for his name:
6, Among whom are ye also the called of Jesus Christ:
7, To all that be in Rome, beloved of God, called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ.
8, First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for you all, that your faith is spoken of throughout the whole world.
9, For God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of his Son, that without ceasing I make mention of you always in my prayers;
10, Making request, if by any means now at length I might have a prosperous journey by the will of God to come unto you.
11, For I long to see you, that I may impart unto you some spiritual gift, to the end ye may be established;
12, That is, that I may be comforted together with you by the mutual faith both of you and me.
13, Now I would not have you ignorant, brethren, that oftentimes I purposed to come unto you, (but was let hitherto,) that I might have some fruit among you also, even as among other Gentiles.
14, I am debtor both to the Greeks, and to the Barbarians; both to the wise, and to the unwise.
15, So, as much as in me is, I am ready to preach the gospel to you that are at Rome also.
16, For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.
17, For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.
18, For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;
19, Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them.
20, For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:
21, Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.
22, Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools,
23, And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.
24, Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:
25, Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.

26, For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:
27, And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.
28, And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;
29, Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers,
30, Backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents,
31, Without understanding, covenantbreakers, without natural affection, implacable, unmerciful:
32, Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death, not only do the same, but have pleasure in them that do them.

2:14-15 The reference to Gentiles (e[qnh, ethne) points not to Gentiles who are Christians, but rather to Gentiles as people without the Mosaic law (and by implication unsaved). If this identification is true, the for (gavr, gar) connecting v. 14 with v. 13 really connects the thoughts of v. 14 with v. 12a. Thus vv. 14-15 are an explanation of why the Gentile without the law perishes. It is because he does have a law which shows that he is guilty.

The Gentiles do by nature (fuvsei, phusei) the things required by the law. In the Greek text the term translated “by nature” could go with “who do not have the law” or with the following phrase “do the things required by the law.” Paul uses the word to refer to Gentiles who do not have the law by virtue of their birth (cf. Rom 2:27; Gal 2:15; Eph 2:3) and so it is often assumed that the first interpretation is what is meant here: Gentiles by nature—because they grew up Gentiles and not Jews—do not have the law of Moses.

But Paul has talked about Gentiles possessing knowledge of God in 1:21 and in 2:15 he talks about them having the work of God written on their hearts. Because of this, and the fact that “by nature” can refer to inward realities (Gal 4:8), it seems best to take it with “do the things required by the law.” That is, there are times (cf. the whenever) “when the Gentiles by virtue of their nature do things required by the law.” Paul must be referring in some sense to the image of God in all men vis--vis their connection to Adam. The expression they are a law to themselves is another way of saying that the demands of the moral law are written within a man.

Some argue that the expression work of the law written on their heart (toV e[rgon tou' novmou graptoVn ejn tai'" kardivai" aujtw'n, to ergon tou nomou grapton en tais kardias auton) recalls the prophecy in Jer 31:33 and that the Gentiles Paul has in mind here are Christians. But while Gentile Christians do share in the new covenant of Jeremiah they can hardly be said to be a law to themselves. Also, the negative tone of the passage and the final clause of v. 15 indicate that Christians are not in view. Again, we return to our earlier stated thesis that Gentile non-Christians are in mind here, i.e., people who are unsaved and do not have the Mosaic Law. The context, it must be remembered, is not about salvation, but about the method of God’s righteous judgment: the Jew by the Mosaic Law and the Gentile by another law, namely, that which God implanted within him to which his conscience bears witness.

The expression “work of the law” can be understood as the work which the law requires that we do. Our conscience (suneidhvsi", suneidesis) bears witness to those works (attitudes and acts) which we know to be the necessary and right demands of the law, but is not to be identified with them.

Further, Paul says, when our conscience is not at peace, it is engaged in a conflict: it will either accuse (kathgorouvntwn, kategorounton) or defend (ajpologoumevnwn, apologoumenon) us. Thus the bottom line is secure: we are spiritually and morally responsible beings. No amount of denial can change this fact. For this reason, Paul says, the Gentile is held accountable before God, just as the Jew is for what he knows. The ultimate day of accountability will come when God finally judges men.

2:16 Unfolding the precise connection of v. 16 with v. 15 or any other part of 2:1-15 is difficult to say the least. Some scholars minimize the future aspects of v. 16 in order connect it closely with v. 15. The problem with this is that “on the day” in v. 16 seems to be a future reference to final judgment. Others say that the “accusing and defending” of v. 15 refers to a future event when Gentiles stand at the judgment before God. But this seems to deny the fact that Gentiles possess a conscience now and the accusing and defending is going on now. It is precisely this rebellion against God’s moral law written on the heart that becomes the basis of their judgment in the future. There are those who argue that vv. 14-15 are parenthetical and v. 16 runs smoothly with v. 13 (see NIV). But to make so much material parenthetical to the point being argued (i.e., God’s righteous judgment) is questionable at best. Perhaps the best way to see the connection is to understand v. 16 as the culmination of a process already in motion. The point is this: the attempt to “accuse and defend” will be brought into broad daylight on the day when God judges the secrets (taV kruptav, ta krupta) of men. That God will judge men’s secrets is in keeping with the fact sin is often related to the conscience, i.e., the inward and hidden moral reasoning of a man (cf. Heb 4:13). That this judgment will take place, and that Jesus will be the judge, is in keeping with the gospel which Paul preached.

+++The Holy Spirit Is Your Helper
The Holy Spirit's desire and purpose is to help you -- not to hinder you.

JOHN 14:16-18 NKJ
16 "And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever,
17 "even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.
18 "I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you.

JOHN 16:7 NKJ
7 "Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you.

JOHN 15:26 NKJ
26 "But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me.

+++Who Is The Holy Spirit?
The Holy Spirit is the third Person of the Trinity of God. It is difficult for humans to understand how there can be only one God, as the Scriptures teach, yet He can reveal Himself as three persons. So do not let it be an obstacle for you.

The Holy Spirit is a person, not just a force. He should be treated with the utmost respect and given the utmost gratitude.

+++How Does He Help You?
Following are a few of the ways the Holy Spirit desires to help you, and will help you if you allow Him to.

+++In Prayer
ROMANS 8:26 NKJ
26 Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.

One weakness of humans, compared to God, is in our limited knowledge. We do not even know what is happening on the other side of a wall, let alone the other side of the country. We also do not know what people are planning to do, but the Holy Spirit knows everything. And He will help us to pray accurately and effectively.

One way the Holy Spirit helps us in prayer is by giving us utterance in a language for prayer which we have never learned. Thus we can bypass our minds with their doubt and lack of understanding of what is best, and pray according to the perfect will of God.

1 CORINTHIANS 14:2 NKJ
2 For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries.

JUDE 1:20 NKJ
20 But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit,

+++Guides Us
The Holy Spirit will, if allowed, guide you in every area of life; from the words you should speak, to the spouse you should marry, to the investments you should make.

ROMANS 8:14 NKJ
14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.

ACTS 16:6-7 NKJ
6 Now when they had gone through Phrygia and the region of Galatia, they were forbidden by the Holy Spirit to preach the word in Asia.
7 After they had come to Mysia, they tried to go into Bithynia, but the Spirit did not permit them.

JOHN 16:13 NKJ
13 "However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you . . . .

+++Teaches Us All Things
JOHN 14:26 NKJ
26 "But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things . . . .

+++Reminds Us Of The Word
JOHN 14:26 NKJ
26 "But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, . . . He will . . . bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.

+++Tells Us Things To Come
JOHN 16:13 NKJ
13 "However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, . . . He will tell you things to come.

+++Declares To Us The Things Of Jesus
JOHN 16:12-15 NKJ
12 "I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.
13 "However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.
14 "He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you.
15 "All things that the Father has are Mine. Therefore I said that He will take of Mine and declare it to you.

+++Abides With Us
JOHN 14:16-18 NKJ
16 "And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever,

9 They worship me in vain;
their teachings are merely human rules.’

3, Concerning his Son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh;
9, For God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of his Son, that without ceasing I make mention of you always in my prayers;
10, Making request, if by any means now at length I might have a prosperous journey by the will of God to come unto you.
11, For I long to see you, that I may impart unto you some spiritual gift, to the end ye may be established;
18, For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;

28, And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;

Thank you CeriseRose, good post.

It troubles me when I see others preaching an exclusionary version of the Gospel, one loaded with man-made "requirements". You are the first person to ever address this issue I've brought up and your explanation here reaffirms my conviction.

And PeterPan....it troubles me to see you are

twisting what CeriseRose posted.

YOU took her post to mean that you do NOT need to be born again

afterall!!!

Nope....not what her post is saying at all, PeterPan.

You still need to be born again , Peterpan....in order to become

saved..and also for the law to be FULLY written on your

heart now ( the law is NOT FULLY WRITTEN ON YOUR HEART UNTIL

YOU ARE BORN AGAIN)....THEN you will obey God with a GLAD heart

now....cause you are now able to obey , because God IN you is

helping you to obey God gladly now.

See...we really are not able to really and truly DELIGHT

in GOD'S LAW, UNTIL WE HAVE A NEW NATURE WITHIN!!!

Here..this will help explain:

But, brethren, the law is not fully written in the heart UNTIL a man, approving the law and appropriating it to himself, feels he delights to obey it.

"There," says he, "O my God, my highest happiness lies in doing as thou wouldst have me to do. I do not want any excuse or indulgence for sin, I want, above everything else, to be holy. It shall be my greatest pleasure to be pure, it shall be my perfect bliss to be perfectly holy.

Thou hast so written thy law in my heart that, every time my heart beats, it seems to beat for holiness. of my NEW-BORN NATURE are towards right, towards truth towards goodness, towards God."

THIS, dear friends, is to have the law of the Lord written in your heart so as to delight in it after the inward man, and to delight to practice it with the outward man, daily striving to make the entire life to be in accordance with the dictates of God's will.

See Peterpan. God KNEW that NO man coudld KEEP The Law.

IF you have broken one law, you are guilty of breaking

them all....

THAT is why God Sent us a SAVIOUR....

to SAVE us and also to help us keep the law now...

God IN us now , helps us to keep the Law...by giving us a new

nature within, so we can keep God's law now, which is fully

written on the tablets of our heart now.

But You must be born again, PeterPan , in order to have this new

nature within...

As I mentioned previously Peter..."You have a conglomeration of issues presented" in this post.

So why don't you just be forthright and tell us what your faith is.

Do you see yourself as a Christian? or something other?

Tell us out right what you believe or what you do not believe.

In stead of testing us and setting traps for us, to see if we will stumble...

Just ask us clear questions.

What, clearly, are you trying to prove?

This will help answer your question, PeterPan:

Moreover, the blessings that were appended to the keeping of the law

ought to have induced men to keep it; look again at those words I

quoted just now: "Ye shall therefore keep my statutes, and my

judgments: which if a man do, he shall live in them: I am the Lord."

This did not mean that the man who kept God's law should merely

exist; there are some in these degenerate days who seek to make out

life to be existence, and death to be annihilation, but there is

little likeness between the words, or between what those words

mean. "He shall live in them," said the Lord concerning the man who

kept his law; and there is a fullness of blessedness couched in

that word, "live."

If men had kept the covenant of the Lord,—if Adam, for instance, had

kept it in the garden of Eden, the rose would have been without a

thorn to tear his flesh, and the enjoyment of life would never have

been marred by the bitterness of toil or grief.

But, alas! notwithstanding all these solemn sanctions of the ancient

covenant, men did NOT keep it. The promise, "This do, and thou

shalt live," NEVER PRODUCED any doing that was worthy to be rewarded

with life; and the threatening, "Do this, and thou shalt die,"

NEVER KEPT any man back from daringly venturing into the WRONG

ROAD which leadeth unto death.

The fact is, that the COVENANT OF WORKS,

if it be looked upon as a way of safety, is a TOTAL FAILURE.

NO MAN ever persevered in it unto the end, and NO MAN ever

attained unto life by keeping it. NOR CAN WE , now that WE ARE

FALLEN, ever hope to be better than our unfallen covenant-head,

Adam; NOR MAY WE , who are already LOST AND CONDEMNED BY OUR

SINFUL WORKS , dream for a moment that we SHALL BE ABLE TO

SAVE OURSELVES BY OUR WORKS !!!

You see, dear friends, the first covenant was in these terms,—"You

do right, and God will reward you for it. If you deserve life, God

will give it to you." Now, as you all know right well, that

covenant was broken all to pieces; it was UNABLE TO STAND by reason

of the WEAKNESS OF OUR FLESH AND THE CORRUPTNESS OF OUR NATURE.

So God set aside that first covenant, He put it away as an outworn

and useless thing; and He brought in a NEW covenant,—the COVENANT

OF GRACE; and in our text we see what is the tenor of it: "I will

put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts." This

is one of the most glorious promises that ever fell from the lips of

infinite love. God said not, "I will come again, as I came on

Sinai, and thunder at them." No, but, "I will come in gentleness

and mercy, and find a way into their hearts." He said not, "I will

take two great tables of stone, and with my finger write out my law

before their eyes." No, but, "I will put my finger upon their

hearts, and there will I write my law."

He said not, "I will give promises and threatenings that shall be

the safeguard of this new covenant;" but, "I will with my Spirit

graciously operate upon their minds and their hearts, and so I will

sweetly influence them to serve me,—not for reward, nor from any

servile motive, but because they know me, and they love me, and

they feel it to be their delight to walk in the way of my

commandments."

O dear sirs may you all be shares in the blessings of that new

covenant! May God say this of you, and do this to you; and if so,

we shall meet in the glory-land, to sing unto the grace of that

eternal God who has wrought so wondrously with us, and in us, and

for us!
