Topic: Fact vs Opinion

A fact is something that is true about a subject and can be tested or proven.
Look for clues such as: " 56% of...., or "The patient experienced..."

An opinion is what someone thinks about that subject.

Look for clues such as: "I believe...", "It's obvious...", or "They should..."

....scary to see how modern internet culture has made the ability to distinguish between the two such a rare skill,,,

I take everything said in here,
as that person's opinion.

It is not out of the question,
to learn something from opinions.

Facts I assimilate on my own.
Now.
Let us pray for those who cannot
withstand the religion forums.

Pray extra hard for me. If I spend too much time in there I end up deactivating.

Its a FACT,,That EVERYONE will HAVE THEIR OWN OPINIONS!laugh

And Miss Harmony,,I'm very proud of you for not allowing others to try and take you down,,in the Religion threads..

I was one of the first here to promote that the site needed one here,,so Christians would not fall under attack..I wasn't reborn then
and after I did go into it and see and read all the pain and fighting there that it was making,,it saddened me greatly,,for it backfired,,which I never suspected,,all of the folks who believe other-wise or just people with no beliefs..
THEY need still to add a Forum just for them..
Make it,, The Ethiests Forum....
THEN,,THEY have a place to vent,,and the Christians there can BE the softer Christians within them...
But I have already a year ago here,,suggested that?

Soufie, you said my thoughts..

I've noticed that sometimes I enter a forum hoping to be provided with some facts so I may form or modify my own opinion only to be slandered for questioning a certain stance. It's very frustrating.

The worst part is that I can be confrontational rather than just walking away. That's my bad. I should know better than to put myself through such aggravation, especially when I am looking for discussion rather than a battle of wills.

I really should stay out of the political forums...

I already stay out of the religious forums for the same reason, plus I don't know scriptures.

My religious knowledge is based more on reading philosophy, practices, and some mythology. So I tend to know more about ancient pagan religions than Judeo-Christian ones. Part of that is because I was a history major.

I can't talk in specifics about the Torah, the Bible, or the Koran. I've always said I wanted to read the Bible out of intellectual curiosity. I just never have because I never remember to pick up a copy. When I eventually do, I would like to read the most authentic version I can. I like to see the original intentions rather than later modifications.

So I guess I find the religious forums a bit daunting. Maybe that's a good thing.

Ha! This is the internet...EVERYONE is an expert!

Pick a topic...ANY topic....once some shmuck Googles it, they will argue all day long with you on how wrong you are and how right they are cause they read it on the internet and everything on the internet is a FACT. I really like it when they provide a link to prove that they read it on the internet.

Feel free to test this theory in the politics thread.

Opinions on the other hand ain't no better. Go to the religion threads....ain't a single damned fact in the place but, that won't stop them from b!tching and arguing opinions. (they are as viscious and heartless as the politics gangs)

There isn't a single thing I can think of where people will agree.

So, opinions and facts don't actually make the least bit of difference.

Kruppa, you talk like a guy who has never enjoyed the sweet pleasure of winning an argument. A purely intellectual argument, I must add in haste.

In another forum, a very long time ago, a woman proposed that we should write poetry reflecting the never-ending philosophizing.

I wrote this then:

The Passion Of Wanting To Know

In the land of giants
One will erect a post
And put a sign on top.

Other giants will
Agree with what the sign says
Or else push the post over.

The sign’s supporters push
Against those who push against it.

They battle it out
Sometimes with reason,
Sometimes with force.

When it’s over, almost immediately,
Analysis of the battle follows.

The post could be a football game
Or a soccer match
Or a statement that the Earth is round
Or that we descended from monkeys.

Though the game is over,
It’s never over
For the giant’s minds,
However analytical,
Can only infer what reality is –

Yet reality they crave to know.

There are literally oodles of things we all agree on.

You just don't notice them, Krupa, because there are no spitting and screaming arguments aroud them so nobody takes notice.

----------

Please notice that this ^ was an argument. The telling sign is that our opinionos oppose.

The argument is over whether we agree on some things or we don't agree on anything.

As this illustration shows, a good arguer needs nothing at all beyond hearing at least two words strung together in a sentence to start an argument.

"Argumentative people of the world, unite; you have nothing to lose but harmony and accord, and all the arguments to win."

I don't know why Karl Marx did not think about this.

That a "fact" is a "fact" is basically an opinion.

But don't confused the term "fact" for an actual fact.

FACTS ARE WHAT IS.

Some things people call "facts" are just opinions.
