The department of wildlife just stock the lakes here in the city. Trout fishing has been great.

I took my kids fishing for the first time on Sunday. It could have gone better. On a side note, my dad must have been a saint to teach three boys how to fish.

Hi everybody. Even though I chase pike, smallies and largemouths, trout season opens up soon and even I enjoy fresh trout. After making a meal or 2 I like to smoke them. Anyone have a favorite brine recipe they want to share?

I have used many a brine recipe in the past but I come back to the one my father used.
BRINE: 1/2 c. canning salt 1/2 c. natural sugar 1/2 c. light brown sugar Cover with apple cider the good stuff A mix of apple wood and cherry wood chips soaked in apple juice Place the salmon fillets in the brine for 8-12 hours. Keep cold and stir occasionally. Drain the salmon and pat dry with paper towels. Discard the brine. Place the fillets on racks and let air dry about 1 hour, until you see a glaze over the fish. Drain the wood chips you are going to use for the first smoke, then add wood chips as needed. Smoke for about 8-10 hours. I have used this recipe for trout and salmon. Used it for wiper and for striped bass and for walleyes. I tend to smoke the whole fish by opening the fish up then placing the fish with the skin side down on the racks. I place the smaller fish at the top of the smoking racks. |

I do alot of surf fishing. I get to sea sick when out on a boat. Or I fish off the pier. Or the inlet bridge. My favorite fish to catch is sheepshead. So good! I catch alot of blues right now. Blah but fun to fight.

When I lived in Southern California, I enjoyed surf fishing. Caught some very nice fish that way. Also liked to fish off the pier at Santa Monica. I caught a nice barracuda just off that pier.

I been trying for 4 years to catch a cobia off the pier. No luck yet

I have been told that is why they call it fishing. I like pier and surf fishing more than off a boat. Got a Sea Bass once, it was huge, had to let it go they were protected.
