Exactly what I was saying, if you dont discipline your kids now, they are as harmful, as a piece of machinery, and more so. When they go out into the world, and have been formed into a "bad person", its very likely that they will hurt others, and/or themselves.Most abusive men and women were abused as children, to them, if they see mommy and daddy do it, than it must be ok, and therefore the cycle continues, unless at some point they seek help, and dont repeat the past again. That goes for any kind of abuse, smoking, drinking, drugs, physical abuse, mental abuse, and just generally being a violent person. And msharmony, im sorry, but yes, I do believe an abusive person is as dangerous, if not MORE dangerous, than a person operating machinery. If its not done correctly, someone can get seriously hurt, IE Kruupas point...the parents may find themselves at the hospital or the morgue, as a result of their childs actions. When I suggested a parenting licence, I was merely stating that I find it unbelievable that you have to have a license to drive, hunt, or fish, or shoot a gun. I wansent suggesting that they LITERALLY, need to have a licence to have children. What I was saying, is that ALL of those, require some form of education about whatever they are being licensed to do, and yet there is no requirements, who may, or may not have children, and how they are raised.So when a parent drinks in front of their children, does drugs, smokes or abuses others, children emulate what they have seen, and the cycle continues. Thats why I was suggesting that I BELIEVE people should at least have to be mentally stable, before they are allowed to have children. Of course, it will never come to a parenting license being issued, that was an example, but look at other countries. If there are too many people in their country, they limit the amount of children you may have, and thats a wise decision, although not for all, but what I would like to see is that the people,that are raising our next generation, are at least given something, to help them understand, that they are molding a life, a person, that will likely do whatever they saw, or were taught, growing up. I believe a living person is much more significant, than a piece of machinery. Its a living human being, who will go into the world, and effect everything,, and all that he/she comes in contact with. A piece of machinery, sits and does nothing,, unless it is operated, and operated properly, and doesnt necessarily effect the world, as much as a human does.THAT was my point. I believe a well formed life, is wayyyyyy more inportant than a car, a gun, a fish, or a bear, yet those all require licensing,and parenting requires nothing more than to have sex, no matter who, or what, you are, and I think thats scary. Thats why we get bad, raising bad, and if there were a way to prescreen, educate, or examine, a potential parent, to determine that they are fit to be a parent, (this is all hypothetically speaking, of course) and if they are not,than at the very least, TRY to somehow educate them about raising a human life, that will go into the world, and 99% of the time, repeat what they have been taught or have seen. But we all know, of course, that will never happen. America is the land of the free, so anyone is free to have, and raise, as many children that they want to, and pretty much, any way they want. To be good, bad dysfunctional, whatever, thats just accepted as, "the way it is". And I wish, we could somehow, fix that mistake, BEFORE it happens, and another unhealthy person, becomes a part of society.

Those who think hitting is the way to get a child to behave need to be a bit more creative...i think the intelligence and willingness of a child to please us, is grossly underestimated.

I got spanked and i deserved it. Especially the time i got to big for my britches and caught the belt from mom. Dad got home and i had the western print from his belt on my @$$ for a week.

I do believe that a child can be raised without spanking them also, it all depends on the circumstances. Now a 5 year old little boy, calling his mother a biotch, I believe needed a "get some respect" swat, the worse was when she rewarded him for it, by buying him the toy.I was never spanked, that I didnt deserve it, and I was never beaten. Under any circumstances, there is no way a child, or anyone should be seriously beaten, especially if they are unable to defend themselves.That goes for animals also. Animal cruelty is horrible! Everytime I see one of those commercials on T.V. with the abused, skinny, beaten up, animals, I cry! Its just horrible!

Whoaaaaaaa, why does that not surprise me, that mommas spanking, was worse than daddys!

Im the baby too, but it worked reverse for me. I used to get my sister spanked instead of me!

I was spanked as a child. It taught me respect for my authorities and that there are consequences to my actions. My stepdad wouldn't waste his or my time with the old, "This hurts you more than it hurts me". He would take me aside, tell me, "This is what you did, this is why I'm doing this". He'd swat me a few times, I'd cry, five minutes later we'd be playing Atari or baseball or Star Wars or whatever. It didn't feel good at the time, but as I said before it taught me respect for authority and that there are consequences to my actions. Who knows what I would have gotten into were it not for the few and far between times I was spanked. And to this day, I'm probably closer to my stepdad than I am to anyone else in my family.
