I was spanked as a child. It taught me respect for my authorities and that there are consequences to my actions. My stepdad wouldn't waste his or my time with the old, "This hurts you more than it hurts me". He would take me aside, tell me, "This is what you did, this is why I'm doing this". He'd swat me a few times, I'd cry, five minutes later we'd be playing Atari or baseball or Star Wars or whatever. It didn't feel good at the time, but as I said before it taught me respect for authority and that there are consequences to my actions. Who knows what I would have gotten into were it not for the few and far between times I was spanked. And to this day, I'm probably closer to my stepdad than I am to anyone else in my family.
