navygirl, if that works for you that's great..more power to ya sister.
I happen to like the feeling I have when my 3 grown sons surround me. I feel safe and protected and I hope the future women in their lives feel it also.

This is why I took karate, jujitsu, unarmed combat, and kickboxing. Fact is I end up protecting guys with my training. LOL I just hate the generalization that all men protect women. Its a joke at best especially when its the men doing the hurting in the first place. I think when I get home I will need to take a few rounds out of my boxing bag because I am thoroughly pissed!! Man, just when you thought people evolved; we end up taking two steps back. Society sucks and I can see why people become hermits.

That's great that you can kick some ***.....no-one said ALL men protect women. But you did just say it's the men doing all the hurting....
I think you should go a few rounds with with your boxing bag, you sound like you need it if you think 'we' haven't evolved and have stepped backwards because we don't hate ALL men as much as you. Sounds more like your heart needs healing and hating instead of healing is a giant step backwards...

Our society is a reflection of our thoughts...we create it. If ya hate your life, change it!

I am sick to death of the damsel in distress crap. I am embarassed sometimes to be a woman.

I dont see it as damsel in distress, I see it as gentlemanly behavior

because I CAN open the door for myself, and the gentleman I am with chooses to do it for me, I interpret that as them doing something that SPARES Me some effort, which I see as an act of kindness

I guess its all about personal perception though,,,

It is about personal perception. I fought for the right to be in the military and be equal to men not less than them.

not condoning rape just because one is a soldier is hardly bashing...
who said it was "rape" ... the woman? is she telling the truth?
just because a woman says it was rape then it automatically is?

lol, i knew this would turn into a male-bashing thread... bash away ladies, women never lie and it's always the guys fault...hahahaha

I am not male bashing just saying I can take care of myself and I don't like men assuming that all women need to be protected. As for the guy that says women shouldn't be in the miltary; that is a whole other topic.

you are the only one that didn't, you have a level head..he didn't say that women shouldn't be in the military, he said we should expect these types of problems since they are getting more duties in the military. some people turned it into "women should not be in the military"... i was in the navy for 4 years, and never once heard of a woman getting raped, as a matter of fact, 2 men were raped on my ship in the 3 years i was on it... but no women were...but the whole question was should the government pay for there abortions, and i said if was proven rape, than yes, the government should...but for all this rape they say is happening, they have EVERYONES DNA on their records, and it should not be very hard to match DNA samples... so why are they not doing it?

I thought you meant I was male bashing. I agree; rape was never a problem when I served on ship either. Actually it was a woman that said maybe we shouldn't have women in the military which I found even worse. I just got upset about saying men should be protecting me. I would have been useless in my job if I couldn't take care of myself. When we were in combat; a man doesn't have the time to protect me as he will get himself killed. I couldn't live with the fact that I caused someone to die because I was a woman. This is why I find the whole concept of being protected digusting. I was in some real nasty situations with terrorist threats that I needed to stay strong and do my job and I couldn't have a man worry about my safety. No woman could ever understand this if she never served in the miitary. I just have to remember what I am dealing with on this site as they have never walked a mile in my combat boots.

maybe, but this is my point
Sexual assault in the armed services is at crisis levels. Tragically, we see story after story of servicewomen being attacked by their own colleagues. In the fiscal year 2010, according to the Department of Defense, 3,158 military sexual assaults were reported, many of which were reports of rape. As DOD officials have stated, even “one sexual assault is one too many,” but the above number — which is in the thousands — barely scratches the surface. Most servicewomen who have experienced sexual violence do not report the incident. Researchers estimate that up to one-third of women experience an attempted or completed rape during their military service.

where in that paragraph does it say anything about any CONVICTIONS?
are people not innocent till proven guilty?
that paragraph alone really says nothing, other than the fact to get people riled up. what facts are presented here? 3000 sexual assaults were reported? and it doesn't even say how many were woman...

We did have one incident on ship where a woman said she was sexually harassed by the guys. Funny thing is I was there at the time of the incident and she started the whole incident by being crude and making sexual comments to the guys. So I told the truth and the case was dropped. So, I see where you are coming from as yes I do believe some cases of rape are not so clear cut.

The irony Mightymoe is it was the women that pissed me off and set me off. I should know better than to listen to civilians. If I did say anything to offend men; I do apologize. I was just so upset to hear about this topic as its dear to my heart. I always got along well with the men I served with and I was one of the boys. My only real anger is with relationships in which I was physically abused. I love my male friends in the military as they are truly my brothers who have treated me as a fellow soldier/sailor.

They should see them as comrades and not the weaker sex to protect. This was my whole point. When I am in the field, a guy should equally protect a man as he would me. That was the point I was trying to make. As for civilian women; if they need a man to protect them, then I say go for it. I just don't want to be lumped in as one of the women that needs protecting.

From a few posts here it appears to me that my stand on rape is misunderstood.

I absolutely abhor rape and think the men that do it are scum. Since it has a very high recidivism I think these men should be locked up for life, or possibly be given their own community to live in.

But the VAST majority of men are not like that. They actually love and respect women. Such as myself.

That said, rape still occurs. How do we prevent it? There is no punishment severe enough that will stop a minority of men from raping.

Instead we throw a blanket over all men and say all are bad and should be corralled because they are incapable of controlling themselves.

I would prefer to be allowed to be a man and not have to continually apologize for my entire gender.

If you want a case of travesty of justice. My former brother-in-law was driving a car when his friend in the back seat raped the girl with them. he was threatened at gun point to keep driving. He was a victim too.

But because he was a man in the car he was guilty by association. If it was a woman driving this would have never occurred. He accepted a plea deal to assault - even though he never laid a hand on her. Both lawyers agreed to this and were only sorry they couldn't reduce it further. When they went before the judge, he saw rape printed on the docket. He threw the book at him. Given 20 years and is now a registered sex offender because he drove a car with a gun to his head.

thats awful, did he have a public defender ? Gun to the head is clearly under distress , how could an attorney not have won that?

the guy that assaulted me had done NINE years for KILLING someone,,and this guy gets your brother twenty years for being coerced with a gun to drive a car? I hope the actual rapist got a harsher sentence,,,

shows that justice is JUST for those who can afford to pay for it,,

They both got the same sentence. He elected for a plea bargain which meant no jury. Both lawyers said he would be in and out witha years probation. But because it was a plea bargain the judge could rule however he saw fit. Both lawyers were stunned by the judges decision but couldn't change it.

But the military is not a free clinic for every woman to give birth in, they all have a job to do, and getting pregnant is not part of that job.

Again I have to agree with you. When we first started taking women on combat ships, they would get pregnant to get off ship which left women like me to do their jobs. I guess this is why again I got on well with the guys as I didn't play the pregnancy card. Thanks mightymoe for making me feel better.

I am sorry that my position on women in the military is so offensive....especially because "it comes from a woman." however, I am not going to change that belief based on anything I have read here.

As for the rapes, I obviously have no idea how many are real victims and how many are made up for various reasons. But I'm certain that if a woman is raped while serving her country she is entitled to whatever medical care she and her doctor believe is in her best interest.
