Yup, a lot of people don't understand the difference if they never served.

I remember being shocked when I took my oath to defend my flurry. There is one line where you say something like - I understand I can be executed for dereliction of duty.

You say on your oath that you give permission for your chain of command to kill you.

This may sound cold. But there was a reason they didn't let women in the military earlier. I believe this just shows why it isn't a good idea.

Anyone that argues that the men should just keep it in their pants is of course correct on these situations. However, pragmatically - that is a pipe dream.

This post of yours.....disturbing.
2 times now you are saying that if 'we' haven't been in the military we just don't understand....
understand what? Rape is rape regardless of who has been in the military. I already asked..what does being trained to fight have to do with rape..

and i have been wrong before, probably will be again

I am only trying to explain why the percentage of rape in the military is higher than the national average. That is a fact. Is it just coincidence? Does the military just attract these kind of people? I think it is because of the way men are trained to be willing to kill someone because they are wearing a different uniform. Because in battle, that is all there is to it. You can't have men on the front line that will be hesitant to pull the trigger because that is another human being on the other side.

That is what it takes to defend our country from those that want to destroy us. If you don't like it, then abolish the military altogether and turn over our country to someone else. But then they will form their own military and the cycle starts all over again...

And this makes you think it's ok to make excuses for rape in the military?

Where in the world are you getting this idea????

I have NEVER said rape was ok anywhere either in or out of the military!!!!! I did say the men that do this are weak and cowardly. How is that making an excuse for them????

I was only trying to answer the question I just posed...

Why is the percentage of rapes in the military higher than the national average?

While I appreciate the sacrifices the military makes for us, at the same time strongly oppose war...perhaps society has placed military personal in the 'god status'. Like I said earlier, kinda like the NBA.
The un-touchable, I can have what I want, you know you want me babay
mentality is a problem. The rules of rape don't change just because your taught to be a fighter. I do feel that teaching men, women to hate, fight, etc. can surly do a number on your head since it isn't natural to hate and want to hurt others.
However..the rules don't change..rape is rape.
You choose this life, live it with dignity. Being a soldier is no excuse to be a rapist!

The OP stared off saying that women in the military should be provided medical care for abortions.

I looked at the problem of women being raped in the military.

That is all I have done in this thread.

Tried to answer the question: why is it higher than the national average.

Defending the Rights of the Women Who Defend Us

Today, Reps. Susan Davis (D-Calif.), Robert D. Andrews (D-N.J.), Diana DeGette (D-Colo.), Carolyn Maloney (D-N.Y.), Loretta Sanchez (D-Calif.) and Louise Slaughter (D-N.Y.) stood up for U.S. servicewomen, and submitted an amendment to the 2012 National Defense Authorization Act that would end the unconscionable policy of denying rape survivors serving in the military health coverage for abortion care. The all-powerful House of Representatives Committee on Rules will decide this week whether this amendment — protecting the health and rights of U.S. servicewomen — deserves to get a vote.

Sexual assault in the armed services is at crisis levels. Tragically, we see story after story of servicewomen being attacked by their own colleagues. In the fiscal year 2010, according to the Department of Defense, 3,158 military sexual assaults were reported, many of which were reports of rape. As DOD officials have stated, even “one sexual assault is one too many,” but the above number — which is in the thousands — barely scratches the surface. Most servicewomen who have experienced sexual violence do not report the incident. Researchers estimate that up to one-third of women experience an attempted or completed rape during their military service.

In the face of this epidemic, federal law denies servicewomen and military families coverage for abortion care, even in cases of rape or incest. By contrast, the federal bans on abortion coverage for women enrolled in Medicaid, disabled women enrolled in Medicare, federal employees (other than members of the armed services), women who receive health care through the Indian Health Service, and women in federal prisons, all include exceptions for rape survivors. (The only other coverage restriction that doesn’t include a rape exception is the ban on abortion coverage for another group of women serving our country — those in the Peace Corps.) Even extreme and unprecedented anti-choice bills pending in Congress include exceptions for rape and incest.

Every woman should have the health care coverage she needs, regardless of how she pays for it. At the very least our military women deserve the same access to care as all of the other women who get their health insurance through the federal government.

As Undersecretary of Defense Clifford Stanley stated, “the American public should rightfully expect that when their...daughters raise their right hand to serve our great nation, they do so in a culture and environment where dignity, respect and protection prevail.”

U.S. servicewomen put their lives on the line for us every day. We owe it to them to fight for their dignity and respect their choices. Thank you Reps. Davis, Andrews, DeGette, Maloney, Sanchez and Slaughter for acting to correct this injustice.

Tell your representatives that this important issue deserves a vote — it’s time to defend the rights of the women who defend us.

I believe this is missing the major point.

It is the fact the women are being raped on the job that is the problem here. What kind of men are we allowing in our military anyway? We can identify precursors to rape in men. They are hostile towards women, they are highly judgmental of women believing most to be slut/whores or capable of slut/whore actions, they get off on frightening women, etc... So why can't we weed them out?

Most insurances do not cover abortion so why should the federal insurances be any different? If a woman works in a bakery and gets raped, if she doesn't get the "morning after pill" then she will have to go and pay for the abortion like everyone else does. But again the issue here is that she got raped on the job by a coworker and that it has happened here before, like the military issue.

I do support the women who serve this country but I don't know that I am in agreement with this.

Anyone have an opinion?

It was such a problem in Iraq that servicewomen were instructed not to go to the showers alone.

fact is that there are men of the mentality that they deserve to behave this way, and also men who resent women being in the military

any serviceman who rapes a colleague, or anyone else, will hopefully receive an immediate discharge without honor and be subject civilian prosecution

perhaps the military is not doing enough to remind the fellas of the potential consequences and then enforcing them

providing security for women is a good idea

we know that sometimes women will lie about rape but the actual occurrence of that is very rare. most women and children - an overwhelming number - who report are telling the truth and fact is the crime itself is grossly under reported due to fear

I'd stay away from the men on here, or anywhere, who want to place the blame back onto women

I'd prefer to see a man accept that his gender commits these acts and swear that he never will

Patrick, you may as well give this up. No matter how you say it your statement is translated into "men are excused from rape in the military."

It doesn't matter that you didn't say it. Your belief (and mine for that matter) that this is one reason women should not be in the military translates into "they got what they deserved".

Maybe guys should learn some self control. I slept in a tent with 10 men while in the field; aside some teasing; they never layed a hand on me and respected me for doing my job. In my eyes; these were real men; not cowardly bastards that would rape a woman.

well said and to clarify

training to be a fighter should include training in honor- this is a man who should, if properly trained, be LESS likely to commit an assault- sexual or otherwise. We need to look at how we are training

a serviceman who rapes violates his honor code and the honor of the military service

perhaps the US military needs to re emphasize the honor equation

Taking women out of the military so the men won't be tempted, c'mon!
WTF....lets just all wear burka's so the poor horny men won't get a boner and have to rape. Such silly-ness!

The problem won't be solved by removing the women. The problem isn't with the rape victim, it's with the rapist. Take the drugs away from an addict and the problem is only gone until drugs are back in the picture, their still an addict.

Personally I have never had an interest in serving in the military..if a woman chooses that, why should she be punished from serving because someone else may want to rape her, that just makes no sense.

Put them in a burka, take away the make-up, cut the hair, no pretty skirts allowed.....take away all that makes a woman a woman and the problem still is there because the vagina is still there.
Maybe a pocket-p uSs y for all horny military men is needed.

When I was in it was a shameful fact that was brought up in all the sexual harassment classes I had to attend. Attendance of this class is mandatory for all military personnel. Can't remember the rate. At least twice a year. May have been once a quarter. In my unit, referring to a woman in a derogatory manner was punished with an Article 15. Then I transferred to a new unit and my first day there witnessed sexual harassment in a squad meeting and none of the sergeants in charge did anything about it. It was a private that did it.

The difference being - my first unit was all male. The second was mixed.

ok, so, ignore the fact that there is rape in the military and just give them access to medical treatment after. Sex crimes have an extremely high recidity rate.

There is another reason to keep women out of the military. Rape really destroys moral.

I was deployed to Bosnia for 7 months. No rapes occurred that I know of but there was a lot of sex and peeping toms. It got to the point that I was ashamed to even realize the person I was looking at was a woman. I felt guilty just for being a man.

I agree with both of you! While it isn't right by any means it is overlooked due to their occupation! Restricting women from the military may prevent our women from being raped, but a rapist is a rapist and will find a victim or victimize given the opportunity. Being that the incidence of rape is higher in the military they should be doing something to minimize it! I don't think covering an abortion/morning after pill for a rape victim is too much to ask if she is serving our country. Maybe the should send some hookers to war with the men folk to keep them pacified...IDK the answer here. It's been happening since the beginning of time so it's an issue that will never disappear, but how to limit it is the question we should address here IMO.

The OP stared off saying that women in the military should be provided medical care for abortions.

I looked at the problem of women being raped in the military.

That is all I have done in this thread.

Tried to answer the question: why is it higher than the national average.

And since it is higher than the national average, maybe we would be better off if women were not allowed in the military.

this statement keeps coming back to me.....
"Anyone that argues that the men should just keep it in their pants is of course correct on these situations. However, pragmatically - that is a pipe dream."

Maybe a pocket-p uSs y for all horny military men is needed.

ok, so, ignore the fact that there is rape in the military and just give them access to medical treatment after.

I don't think the fact should be ignored...nor do I think the government should pay for abortions.

I once watched a documentary about women in the military on 60 minutes or a show like it. There was a very elderly retired military
officer talking of his thoughts of why he did not want women in the military. He spoke of his wife and daughters and how his role as a man was to protect them. He spoke of how difficult it is to watch fellow male soldiers being abused by the enemy and how he didn't think he could keep his mouth shut if he ever witnessed a fellow soldier who was a woman being raped, tortured, etc. His reasoning to not want women there was his innate and overwhelming natural
response to protect them, women.

This to me, is reasonable. Not allowing women in the military because a fellow soldier may have an urge to rape is not.
Rape is not about sex, it's about control and power.

It would be a cold day in hell that I need any man to protect me!! I have and always will take care of myself. The very thought of some ahole thinking I need him to protect me makes me sick!!!!

From a few posts here it appears to me that my stand on rape is misunderstood.

I absolutely abhor rape and think the men that do it are scum. Since it has a very high recidivism I think these men should be locked up for life, or possibly be given their own community to live in.

But the VAST majority of men are not like that. They actually love and respect women. Such as myself.

That said, rape still occurs. How do we prevent it? There is no punishment severe enough that will stop a minority of men from raping.

Instead we throw a blanket over all men and say all are bad and should be corralled because they are incapable of controlling themselves.

I would prefer to be allowed to be a man and not have to continually apologize for my entire gender.

If you want a case of travesty of justice. My former brother-in-law was driving a car when his friend in the back seat raped the girl with them. he was threatened at gun point to keep driving. He was a victim too.

But because he was a man in the car he was guilty by association. If it was a woman driving this would have never occurred. He accepted a plea deal to assault - even though he never laid a hand on her. Both lawyers agreed to this and were only sorry they couldn't reduce it further. When they went before the judge, he saw rape printed on the docket. He threw the book at him. Given 20 years and is now a registered sex offender because he drove a car with a gun to his head.

thats awful, did he have a public defender ? Gun to the head is clearly under distress , how could an attorney not have won that?

the guy that assaulted me had done NINE years for KILLING someone,,and this guy gets your brother twenty years for being coerced with a gun to drive a car? I hope the actual rapist got a harsher sentence,,,

shows that justice is JUST for those who can afford to pay for it,,

navygirl, if that works for you that's great..more power to ya sister.
I happen to like the feeling I have when my 3 grown sons surround me. I feel safe and protected and I hope the future women in their lives feel it also.
