I worry about our mideast troops. They have it much rougher than Vietnam in my opinion.

Coming back, I "got over" it by immersing myself in job and college with the GI Bill. Due to the economy, our troops are having a hard time with jobs, which to me, helps the recovery process.

So I think about my fellow brothers/sisters all the time.

This is a great idea. I lost my husband 2 years ago in Afghanistan when he went back for his 5th tour.

We have lost many more this last week... Take a moment and pray for those we have lost and their families. Please do not forget those that are still fighting for this country!

At military funerals, one often sees three volleys of shots fired in honor of the deceased veteran. This is often mistaken by the laymen as a 21-gun salute, although it is entirely different (in the military, a "gun" is a large-calibered weapon. The three volleys are fired from "rifles," not "guns." Therefore, the three volleys isn't any kind of "gun salute," at all).

Anyone who is entitled to a military funeral (generally anyone who dies on active duty, honorably discharged veterans, and military retirees) are entitled to the three rifle volleys, subject to availability of honor guard teams. As I said, this is not a 21-gun salute, nor any other type of "gun salute." They are simply three rifle volleys fired. The firing team can consist of any number, but one usually sees a team of eight, with a noncommissioned officer in charge of the firing detail. Whether the team consists of three or eight, or ten, each member fires three times (three volleys).

The three volleys comes from an old battlefield custom. The two warring sides would cease hostilities to clear their dead from the battlefield, and the firing of three volleys meant that the dead had been properly cared for and the side was ready to resume the battle.

The flag detail often slips three shell-casings into the folded flag before presenting the flag to the family. Each casing represents one volley.

This is heart breaking. Tears are in my eyes for your loss. We often talk about the men & women that serve but little is mention about their loved ones and the pain they have to endure. My heart goes out to you and your family. I hope you are getting all the support you need.

I pray these wars end..and our troops can come home safely. I pray we find better means. I mourn the loss of our loved ones, our fathers, our sons, our wives, our daughters, brothers, sisters, uncles and aunts and what they could have contributed....the voids they would have filled. I will speak against war, I could not support or encourage a loved one to join...I tell them there are other ways...but never, NEVER would I speak disparagingly of or to our troops, to those who heed the calling and serve with honor, with purpose.....I love you all, appreciate you all and try to live my life so that the sacrifices you have made were not in vain.

I believe our veterans and servicepeople should have their own thread where they can share their own stories, reveal historical tidbits, and refect upon their service. They can even speak of the places they have been to give our civilian population a chance to see the value of this part of life. I feel this is so important and even shed some light on those who were wounded or even those who were POWS and MIAS. These folks should never be forgotten EVER!!!

May God bless them all!flowerforyou
