I took refuge and Boddhisattva vows many years ago at a Tibetan Center. There are so many flavors of Buddhist practice - perhaps that is why we are all still studying? The current Dalai Lama practices for hours daily - you never really stop practicing compassion. Well, you HOPE not to stop.
Many centers have so many different viewpoints and ways of doing things that finding what is most comfortable and 'right' is a challenge. Most of the Stateside Sanghas are asian. They are largely welcoming but the language and customs are different - and how do you have a conversation on 'mind' or 'nothingness' with someone with whom you share no common language? Are there many Sanghas where you all are at? May I ask what the practices are? |

I was born into Buddhism and it varies from culture, region, and even from monks. There is an old saying and I forget where its from and the exact words, but they are something like this.
"The Path that can be mapped is not the true way." It should never be someone's place to teach your heart and soul. It is your journey to be traveled by you and in sharing that journey you may grant wisdom to those that follow you. |

that's a pretty explication! You, maybe, didn't catch it completely as you were born into this mentality. Me, born as catholic and buddhist from 87, I'd like to make your view easier to understand for new boddhisattwas.
Nichiren Daishonin pointed out that there is no clean country without clean people, and none clean people may enjoy a clean country as long as your mind is not clean. Was it clear enough? Everybody has to purify body&soul to reach a good state of mind and start to serve the country through studying, practicing and discipline Enjoy your path as long as you like it, or find another map to reach the same goal. Love&Peace! |

Hi I am a Buddhist in Australia looking to make new friends! X

I subscribe to Buddhist philosophy but am reluctant to actually reach out to the Buddhist centers here in the Philippines because I'm wary of them making me treat it like a religion, when I come from a more Theravada/Secular Buddhist standpoint.

Could I technically create my own Buddhism based off of Rastafarian philosophical movements?
Haven't studied up on it but my great aunt is straight Buddhist and like her I strive for peace love and happiness, but in a more radical light |

I cannot say that I am officially "Buddhist" because I have not formally "Taken Refuge" or proclaimed Bodhisattva vows. I had a "peak experience" as coined by Abraham Maslow. I believe it is either similar or the same as a "Satori" or "Samadhi". The experience has taught me many things. One of wich is that "Everything is Exactly as it supposed to be in this time and space. And that it could not be anyway else" and that there is no I or you, for we are the same Cosmos. I/we are much much bigger and smaller than our human brain could really realize. All that we can do is bask in the infinite that we may never know. Relax, and enjoy the ride. Everything is already attended to. There is nothing to do. Believe that it is already done, we just have to go thru the motions, to discover how we did it. I have read that the only requirement is compassion. If it is not compassion, then it takes away from compassion. I have found that Buddhism compliments my peak experience. Before then I had no idea that Buddhism ever existed. It was in my search to discover what happened with me that I first discovered Yoga, and then Buddhism. I was shown the way, as if I needed to be hit on my spiritual head to come to my senses. I think that I can teach to and experience another powerful spiritual experience, but if my intent is not sincere, or wrought with ego it will never happen. Letting go of all attachments (mentally) and all afflictive emotions is key. This is also the only way to supreme happiness. I know nothing, I am just an experiencer.

I'm sure your quote upon the way was said by Lao Tzu in his book written about 2500 years ago, 'Tao Te Ching'. But almost all of the true masters that have gained enlightenment or liberation, -speak similarly.
