Topic: for or against the Death Penalty...? | |
---|---|
The Christians have a great saying for this: "Hate the sin, love the sinner". This is high standard to live up to, but its a good one. The people who can live up to this standard in the face of such violence against their loved ones have my highest respect. The fact that I am human, and might suffer from the immorality of personally seeking vengeance against such murderer speaks only of my character, and not of the ethics behind the death penalty. Its like asking if stealing is wrong based on whether a person would ever want to steal. "The Christians"? I am a Christian... I do agree with you that those who are able to forgive have my highest respect as well. |

the problem with the death penalty is the same problem with the legal system period, it is racially, economically and socially biased.....
I also believe that it is legalized murder by someone who had absolutely nothing to do with the crime, wouldn't it be justified family member of the victim pulled the switch rather than some idiot who receives money to take a human life....hmmm and another thing, don't you find it funny they give a drug addict lethal injecdtion, ha the ultimate fix. Our society really baffles me sometimes |

I am against it simply because I think human life is precious and I believe noone has the right to determine who deserves to live or die. I definitely can understand your point of view...of course. Honestly though, would you feel the same if someone you loved were the victim? If someone else decided they felt they had the right to determine how and when they would die? I know it's not something any of us wants to think about -- but that is where my confusion regarding it is. If someone brutally attacked/raped/tortued/killed someone I love dearly, it's very difficult to imagine that a life behind bars is proper punishment for that. It really is... I believe I would. Forgiveness is for the victim not the accused. As a victim of violent crime myself, I can honestly say I would not wish anyone dead or support killing anyone. If I lost a loved one, it would hurt terribly, obviously. But it would not make me feel better to cause someone else to loose theirs... |

It's expensive, it doesn't act as a deterrent and people have been wrongfully executed. I'm against it.

Well I'll make this my final comment inside this thread because I have no desire or need for some heated debate early in the morn.I would much rather compliment my coffee w/a bagel instead. W/O mentioning a posters name I will say that their comment sounds like some pulpit preaching b.s for the self-righteously & self-glorified type individuals.(imo)
Hypothetically speaking of course.Let's say some dirt-bag/dirt-bags enter your family's home while U are away on vacation. They proceed to torture & slaughter everyone within the household and then set fire to the residence in the hopes that all DNA & prints are removed from the crime scene. How quickly will U be able to forgive them? How does one show mercy & forgiveness to perps who slaughter innocent human beings?Where is their mercy or forgiveness? They obviously have no value for human life or morality, empathy, compassion, etc. Well I could go much further into this subject undoubtedly however I will close by saying that capital punishment is the greatest & most feasible deterrent currently available in our downwardly spiraling society that we live in.Justice for the departed & at least some closure for their loved ones. |

From a logical point of view, if you are against abortion- the taking of a human life, you should be equally against capital punishment- the taking of a human life. Sad to say, most people I've run into over the years are for one but against the other, which in my view makes them a hypocrate. As for me, I am against both.

I would not want to be the one to make that decision concerning one's life.
I'm thinking that is gonna be some bad karma..real bad mojo. |

I'll give you some broad concepts to develop. 1) Since the government does not own a person's life, it cannot legitimately take it 2) the fact that the government can hand down a sentence implies a contract between the defendant and the government (if the defendant does X, he will be summarily executed). Since this contract only exists in the imagination of Statist philosophers, this theory is not valid.

That has to be the most ridiculous (il)logic I've ever heard. Dude, they're on death row for a reason. We don't put 'em there just to reduce the grocery bill. They're there because they killed, raped or did both to someone. And as long as they as breathing, there is always a chance they could do it again. I've never been a parent, but I'm relatively sure that a fetus has never committed either crime. |

Child Molesters, Rapists, Sexual Offenders of all types... should burn.
I'm very pro death penalty. What kind of punishment is three square meals a day and guaranteed shelter, medication, and health care? But the humane forms of capital punishment are a tad bit on the expensive side..... where as it's about a dollar for a bullet.... I vote we line 'em up and shoot them all right between the eyes. No last words, no last requests, no final meal.... just a bullet. |

As a crime survivor, believe me there were times I didn't think I would nor did I want to. I have to say that there are people on this earth that are not fit to ever be allowed freedom much less many of the freedoms they are allowed; even on death row. Sadly however many of them NEVER make it to justice so killing a few is really pretty much for appeasement of the masses and not as any deterent.
I do think the justice process is highly flawed and very biaised. While some vicious criminals are sent for a slap on the wrist others are over sentenced and even wrongly scapegoated. The sad fact, however, is a convicted criminal can live better and longer on death row than many of these animals have ever made for themselves as adults. The death penalty just makes it esier for such animals to beat the system and be famouse even imortalized. I think you make it to prison you should cease to have a name. I personally would like to see the whole death penalty issue taken off the table. If they are truely proved to do the crime do the time. Simply cage those animals, no contact with society, or other inmates, or privileges: and be done with it permenently. I don't think rehabilitation is possible for violent offenders. The very few that are; are not worth the risk to society to let them loose. Don't drag the surviors or families through endless court proceedings, appeals, media, and all the hysteria. That is the real horror. Give them and end to the suffering and allow them their privacy. It should be a crime for vultures to publish crime scene photos and details for public consumption. Give all victims some dignity. Make it a crime to to promote or profit from the use of their likeness or the criminal's likeness. I find it truely obscene that we make icons out of killers, sadist, and childmolester's. Don't make the state, or victims, have to reduce themselves to the level of the criminal by taking a life. Most vicious criminals don't care if you kill them and killing someone the way the state does it seems like and easy out. I am no softee on violent criminals. Personally I would put them in a cage with a hole in the floor, no bed, and no clothes and make them suck their sustance out of a tube. They would be lucky if I gave them light much less medical care or or other priveleges. The millions of dollars that are spent on appeals and the death penalty process should used to to prove crimes and to keep more criminals in jail instead of making it a revolving door. |

I am doing a pros/cons paper on Capital Punishment for one of my college classes. It's not difficult to find information regarding either side - for or against it... Just thought I'd take a survey on here - find out the opinions of anyone who wishes to share them. Thanks for any/all feedback given. I am anti-death penalty. Reasons are because the system will never be perfect so innocent people have died by the hands of all who support the death penalty. That blood will never be on my hands. Also it costs us more to execute than it does to house them all their lives. And lastly we need to be studying why people do these heinous things so we can be proactive about it instead of reactive. |

i'm definitely for it
Actually a person on a death row is more expensive than a person in for life. It takes many years and lots of lots of tax money. Back in the day, it only cost the price of a 20ft long rope, which is actually re-usable and could last for many years. Seriously, I got a better idea. I can make hell on Earth to anyone who deserve it. If he killed someone, he had to re-watch all the tapes recorded of the person over and over again (mandatory) running day and night in his cell with pictures decorated of the killed one and has to go each week to take flowers and stair at the killed one's grave for hours and tell what she or he could have been now if she or he would be alive. It's the endless cycle of repetition is what hell is and he would be in hell. there is a pretty big flaw with that idea. most murderers (the premeditated kind) would be all for what you just proposed. you know the cliche of "returning to the scene of a crime"? that is because they like to relive the event, play it over completely in their head as they walk the crime scene again. so, by you playing videos and showing them pictures of their victim constantly, you're giving them what they want. murderers get off on things like this. and take them to the cemetary once a week to show them the victim's grave? HORRIBLE idea! again, you're just glorifying the kill. this would be like porn for them, especially if its the kind of crime where the victim was raped before/after being killed. it may work for someone guilty of vehicular manslaughter while driving drunk, but for someone that premeditated the crime, it would only be rewarding. |

And by the way, prison is no picnic as some of them might believe. It is a horrible horrible place, and there are things that go on there that they might not be aware of. It is a boring, loud, stressful environment, and you have very few human rights, if any, and if someone's there for life, well, they earned it. Prison is not a reward for anyone, and it's the closest thing to hell anyone will ever get to in this lifetime. It's a bad bad bad bad place, and if someone get's the death warrant, well they're getting off easy. The true suffering is in prison. |
