The image of the black man, Does hiphop help of the image of the black man in America?

It depense on the artist, as of late they just don't seem to care or think that its cool. However its never a good thing to judge a race by the little info that you see on TV, but when a person lacks the exposer they'll just go by what they see and assume that was a person is like.

I totally agree that television isn't reality. Same goes for movies.

But when tv and movies is all the people are exposed to, or even when that's what they see ( ie: the way the youth dress and talk ) on a day to day basis, they will wind up perceiving that as the reality.

Isnt that a shame, it takes longer for us to come together as people because some people just shut out the real world.

What bugs me most is when smart, articulate, educated, successful career men of color are made out to be tokens or race sell outs by their own rather than promoted to leadership positions, respected, and emulated. A black man (or woman for that matter) with a job, values, and family is not as rare as it is made out to be but if all that is seen are negatives the positives become invisable.

I get that black culture wants to have and identity that is somehow different than mainstream but I will be glad when I see developed a look that compliments rather than hides the strengths of what builds their culture rather than tears it down. Even in nameing it seems to be a denial of identity of being American and responsible for self.

As far as the hip hop thing I find it a real contridiction. While as a dance and music it is upbeat, athletic, even rythmic but the lyrics are often lost in the vulgarity, overt sexuality, and violence and frantic pace. The clothes are a joke that hide, appear to hate, the body and seem more to be a costume than style. The whole "bling" thing seems like and absolute absence of confidence. A person is not their possessions and fame is fleeting. Why any culture would promote that as representative would seem self destructive. Personally I don't buy that the majority of that promotion is self inspired but if the majority of black culture do not reject it and put something representative in it's place it will fill the void. Sad really when so much better could be offered. IMHO

What did someone say to Lupe?. .. oh yeah
"Dumb it down!"

That's what the producers want.

So we people everywhere copy from one another.
When you live in an area where there are no grocery stores for 10 miles and feed junk food, guns and forced to struggle and all you have is an element shown to you on a daily basis, a person can become brain washed. Thinking that hip hop, this is the only way out.

I can easily toss out something like this
Every white person is like Madoff or every latin behave the same way as those in mexico.
Which is all false!.

My ex is white, my daughter is mixed. I've date many other races.

When are others going to realize that everyone is their own person no matter what you see on t.v. or hear on the radio. get out of you own way stop being judgmental or stay the way you are. There are way to many positive people around black, white, yellow, pink what have you for me to worry about what i see on t.v. Why not turn the m.f off and do something.
Granted there are some of weaker minds that will follow the wolf to slaughter, but there are those that lead and stand alone.

I mean are you really gonna tell me that every black person you've met is like what you see on t.v.

It's perceived as reality because, the youth have made it their reality. Black's and, white's alike emanate these rap band's. They have adopted what they see as their own lifestyle.

Does hiphop help the image of black .....

All depends upon how much stock you put in music videos and what kind of perception you have. I am a musician and see music as an extension of that artist's views or experiences. I think Tupac or Biggie wrote words that related to how they felt based upon their particular experience. I dont think that means all black men had their experience. I think old school like public enemy also spoke about thei rperception of their time and their experience. So, I think, to anyone who already has a negative opinion of black folks, negative black music reinforces it. To anyone who is a bit more grounded and traveled, all hip hop does not have or give a negative image and no one segment of hip hop represents all of any people.

I'll leave it at that its a lengthy ready but worth it.

This discussion can last a lifetime.
There will always be issues like these and many others.

The question is how strong are you? How strong are you not to let images and others than your very own experiences dictate how you accept a race (even the way you were raised).
Challenge
If you were Blind would race matter?
Yall have a good weekend. got homework to do. ..

Fortunately, my exposure has been far more than TV or movies. I can sit and look at the images portrayed by the rappers, or the tv shows, or whatever, and know that they are not the reality of things.

Great posts, dude.drinker

Any people in order to bring themselves up must do it in steps, this is a process for some. For the kids growing up in the ghetto, and stifled, they are more succeptable to their environment as illustrated said.

Of course we know not everyone in that acts the same, i think it a good thing some people as a race be concerned how the culture is affected, and the gravity of a situation, but wants so much to bring his people to a place that is better, meaning, the ones who had been kept back so long coming to a place where they can lift themselves higher, higher, and not restrict themselves from taking themselves or others of that culture to a better place.

We all have stupid stereotypes, but I thank God that there are people willing to look past the silliness to get to whats real and good.

Were all still growing no matter what race. Ive worked at not being sterotypical for my culture, and ethnic background, and I still see people of my culture acting rediculous and stereotypical, and like the tv.

I dont mind it so much, as long its a positive image.

But I mean some people have been so down, that theyre just like NO MAN not again! lol. I feel him, but when I see that stuff in society, I just shake my head.

Don't worry, racist people will always have a reason to be racist, no matter how people of color are represented. We actually have a black president now, but that hasn't changed the minds or hearts of a great many. Some people just have a need to feel superior to others because their lives are **** and/or they've been taught to feel that way. You can't let it get to you, I'm still working on not letting it get to me.flowerforyou

probably not...

No one should let anything someone else does define who or what they are...

I'm not into the negative message given by SOME in the hip-hop industry...

that's the thing about freedom of speech, you take the good with the bad...

Stupidity as no color

I don't think the gangsta image portrayed on a lot of music videos has done anybody any good. But it has added some interesting phraseology to the English language.
