i believe. the proof is the existence of ourselves and our beautiful world and our ability to communicate and describe it as a beautiful world. there is no disproof.

How does one prove a negative?

How could you "prove" Odin doesn't exist, or Anubis, or the 900-foot-long invisible vibrating mosquito that's always 12 feet above me?

"Proof" is the realm of the ones who advocate that something exists.

Example: If you said "I have never been in a McDonald's in my whole life." how would you prove that? In the absence of someone recording your every movement since birth, there would be no real way to do so.

But if you said "I HAVE been in McDonald's," there are any number of ways to verify this. Not all of them would constitute absolute, unequivocal proof, per se, but would, at the very least, serve as strong indicators.

Proving a negative is virtually impossible.

For me, my philosophical default setting is that God doesn't exist. I have yet to see any indication otherwise. I am always willing to be enlightened by him, should he choose to do so.

No one can prove or disprove god exists. One is then left to his own opinion.

Prove to me God doesn't exist.

What's your definition of God?

I would need to know how you define God before I could show you a logical contradiction in your definition.

If you are referring to to a particular mythological figure, like say the stories of God of Abraham. Then I can show you a myriad of reasons why those stories totally conflict with the very attributes that they claim their God must have. And if you're suggesting the Christian version of the story I can point out where Jesus didn't even agree with the teachings and commandments of the God of Abraham. I can also show why it would have been utterly instane for the God of Abraham to command a crowd to murder heathens and then send his only begotten son into that same crowd to commit blaspheme.

In other words, I may not be able to prove that such a God can't exist. But I can prove that the stories about the God are absurd and self-conflicting with the very nature of what they claim God is supposed to be like. In other words they claim that God is all-wise and all-powerful yet they describe this God as doing utterly unwise and lame things.

So I've shown that the mythology is inconsistent and a logical contradiction. Thus I've logically proven that the stories are necessarily flawed and can't possibly be true.

~~~
Now if you have some other definition for "God" please explain and maybe I can find the flaws in that definition too, or possibly agree with it. bigsmile
Prove to me God doesn't exist.
Prove to me invisible leprechauns do not exist.
Prove to me the flying spaghetti monster does not exist.
Prove to me that there is not invisible and immaterial wings attached to the back of my dog and he just chooses not to fly.
I hope you start to see the problem with asking someone to prove something does not exist . . .
Well said, its a foolish proposition. Study math, study science then come back with your questions on how to prove things exist . . .
the question is a false premise. If there exists proof, one need not "believe". If it's necessary to believe, there will be no "proof".
To believe implies taking on faith in absence of evidence. To offer proof negates the need to believe.
So either I can offer proof for the existence of God or I can compel you to believe. By definition, I cannot do both..
Prove to me God doesn't exist.
I don't need to - the onus is on you to provide tangiable evidence that he does...
Personally, I think it was mankinds early attempt to control society, to make it accountable to an all seeing, all hearing entity, at ALL times. Life was savage back then, as a species we lacked the knowledge, science and cognitive capability to understand our surroundings....it would have been an incredibly scary experience living during that period. Life would have been frought with danger, murder, rape, pilage, starvation, disease, discomfort and pain. The only thing to eleviate such a living hell would have been the promise of something better in the 'next life' - provided you obeyed certain rules...how convenient...
Your talking of Christianity - but what about the hundreds of documented 'Gods' before this....or indeed since. Tell me, had you lived in Norway 800 years ago...what God would you have been worshipping? Or ancient Greece? Or if you were born 20 years ago in Iran. What God???? Were they all wrong? You know what happens to people who believe in false prophets/idols...
Can you not see what has happened? You have been endoctrinated into 'the one true faith' as defined by your parents, immediate family, you social group and peers. Ironically, this is exactly how 1.5 billion Muslims, 900 million Hindus, 376 million Budists, 23 million Sikhs, 19 million Juche, 15 million Baha'i, 4.2 million Jainists, 4 million Shinto's, 500 thousand scientologists feel.
The above ideologies in their fundemental state, are irreconcilable. Why isn't their ONE fundemental God that everyone worships? That would atleast point to evidence of an alien visitation during mankinds infancy...
I can think of nothing worse, than a celestial dictator watching over my every move, knowing my every action, my every thought....even thoughts that I had not even became conciously aware of. Its the ultimate guilt trip.....and thats for starters....as Christopher Hitchens puts it....the real fun begins when your dead.
I also find it ironic that God/Jesus is always depicted as a man.Yes a man...heck...its gotta be a man right? None of you think this smells of male ego....an extension of the male genitalia? No?
Consertive-Hippie....I make all my comments with due respect. You're almost certainly a nice guy...and Im sure you'd still be nice even if you didnt believe in God.
the question is a false premise. If there exists proof, one need not "believe". If it's necessary to believe, there will be no "proof".
Why would a God expect people to believe without proof?
Believe what?
That an all-poweful God is at war with a fallen angel he can't control?
That an all-wise God would ask people to judge their neigbors and stone sinners to death?
That an all-loving God would be appeased by blood sacrificies?
That an all-loving God who can intervene in human affairs would just stand by for over 300 years whilst innocent midwives are being burned at the stake in his name?
That an all-wise God would command that his people murder heathens where a heathen is simply anyone who disagrees with his book and/or demands that some other god be worshiped before him?
That this same all-wise God would sends his only begotten son into that same crowd to denounce the teachings in his book and demand that the only way to the Father is through this new guy?
Why would such a God feel that it's so important that people believe all of this stuff on pure faith?
Especially when there are far more intelligent stories of Gods to be found? Why sould we be asked to believe that God is so unintelligent?
Even the Moon Goddess of the Celts appears to be far more intelligent and loving than the God of Abraham, and she doesn't even demand that you believe in her.
Why should it be important to God that we believe anything?
Shouldn't God be more interested in TRUTH and HONESTY?
If when I die I find myself before an angry God who is asking me why I didn't believe in a particular horribly mythology, all I will say is the truth:
I'll say, "I thought you were nicer than that."
What's God going to do then? Become angry with me and say, "What? You thought I was NICE? You LOSE! You're going straight to hell you heathen!"
ohwell
Believe in what?
If I'm going to believe anything I'll choose to believe that God is at least nicer than me, and that would rule out anything that came from Mediterranean mythology.
If I'm wrong, I haven't lost a thing. An egotistical jealous God is an egotistical jealous God whether I believe him or not.
To believe in an egotistical jealous God would be futile. I'd rather not know that such a nasty God exists until I have no other choice in the matter.
In fact, I would even hesistate to call such a God as "God". How nasty does a God need to be before he becomes a demon? Being all powerful doesn't automatically make an entity righteous.
Leaving people on a planet to have to GUESS whether or not a jealous judgmental God exists would already qualify as a dirty rotten trick as far as I'm concerned.
I wouldn't be that cruel to my own pets.
The jealous angry God who demands belief on pure faith lest he'll cast you into a hellfire? whoa
Such a deity is already a jerk with that proclaimation alone.
OK lets not lose focus. I was talking about the God Of Abraham. Abra I have heard this time and time again. You say the stories contradict each other. Show me what you mean.
I am someone who can not believe in anything other then God, it's not something I can explain with facts. If I were to try and prove God existed on a scientific lvl I would most likely fail horribly.
Abra you said
"In fact, I would even hesitate to call such a God as "God". How nasty does a God need to be before he becomes a demon? Being all powerful doesn't automatically make an entity righteous.
Okay in this faith God makes the rules not us. Also who says we know everything and can understand his will to the point that would allow us to scrutinize his authority?
I should have asked from the beginning, Tell me why you don't believe in God? Is that better. No proof just belief.
And I am a nice person thank you.
