I think...in a somewhat convoluted way...this policy is intended to actually limit and dampen...the harrassment...ridiculing...and...mocking...that may take place amongst the ranks...

wouldn't it be better to have a law about THAT. it's actually a law now about harassment etc

what I mean is once...the word spreads...that a certain GI may be gay...could you imagine...what a drill Sgt...may scream in this guys face...as the rest of the platoon laughs..." drop down and give me 20 "...will have an entirely different meaning....lol...gulp !!

As a vet I am perplexed over this. Personally I do not want to be in a foxhole with a gay male. Not homophobic, just want to be sure he wants to get home alive to see his girl as much as I wanted to live to see mine. Instead of, why worry about that when I have a lover right here. Sounds twisted, don't bash me, but I did it and those were my thoughts at the time. What are my teammates (someone who I am putting my life in their hands as I cat nap at 3 am) Is he looking at me or looking for the enemy. I know it does not make sense to many, but I would not want to be in a foxhole with a female either.

Well with your paranoid views I would not want to be in a foxhole with you either. I would worry you would be more suspicious focuces on my intentions than doing what your supposed to do. I don't know many men that are that paranoid. But I must say that you flatter yourself way too much. Not all gay men are going to be attracted to you and even if they were, I imagine they prefer living to doing something stupid in a dangerous situation.

not all gays are like Hilton slaphead

I know but dont ask dont tell keeps the likes of him out of the military.

No actually it doesn't. It only stipulates that as long as you don't admit to being gay and the military is barred from asking, you cannot be removed for being gay. It is very likely many have been in a fox hole next to a gay man and not even known it.

Hello people, any military vets here know that "fraternization with the opposite sex is not allowed also. It is not a one way street. jmo

I gave a first hand opinion. Did you serve? Flattered? No. I just said if I were serving with an openly Gay male in a foxhole, I would question his priorities. But since ther are no records of openly gay men in the military you are saying it would be different. Listen Pal, it has worked pretty damn good for decades, We defeated Hitler, Japan and many fierce enemies with the current policy. But I am sure you havew a better solution. whatever. Tolerance and Liberals are are downfall, not Communism, or Hitler or the likes. jmo. I will not say another word here, so bash me all you want. I don't see former gay military memebers of any sugnificant number saying the current poicy deprived them of anything. Just a fringe group. and rightfully so. Go through basic training everyone. Try it. Bye

I would question the priorities of anyone who couldn't keep his mind on the task at hand while under fire in a fox hole.

so let me get this straight....the ONLY reason I have heard so ar in favor of this is because straight soldier stereotype gay soldiers and think they will hit on them???? whoa

come on people...seriously??? I have never served but I come from a long line of soldier/cops (yes I've said that many times and will keep saying it) if a gay soldier is in the foxhole...do you REALLY think he wouldn't do his job to survive and to protect his troop????

when I was a dancer....I had a good friend that was flamboyant. he was muscular and big. and I would bet my life that in a fight with a straight guy...he could whoop someone even wearing tights and ballet slippers.

One doesn't have to serve to know how some men feel about gay men. The paranoia is evident in how they talk about them. It always amazed me how otherwise strong males can be turned into little boys just at the thought of a gay man in a foxhole with them, yet they can shoot and kill an enemy they don't know any better than the gay man they serve with. Interesting. I know a gay guy that looks looks just like you Cabot. You would never even know he was gay, he also served in the army, took all the same risks you did. No one knew he was even gay until he came out of the army.

Don't the drill sergeants still call you guys girls, to piss you off or have the stopped doing that. It's the same thing, you all hate being called girls because girl represents weakness even when not all girls are weak, nor are gays.

How about this.. straight guys have the same don't ask don't tell that gays are subject to. I bet that would go over big.

All this talk about being in a foxhole with a gay guy....jeeeze...what a crock. Gay men are as much a loyal bunch as any straight guy. You would be so surprised at how many are fighting side by side with straight men. Right now.
I posted last year about a friend that was killed in a car wreck that killed 6 people. He was one of them. He was to be deployed. He was a top scorer in his tests. He had high arms scores. He was a specialist. One would have never known he was gay if he didn't tell them.

I know gay heat and air men. General contractors, plumbers, truck drivers. All of them to a straight person would seem the same. Many of the intelligence in the service are gay.

Perez Hilton now...he would most likely be very loyal to his troop buddies and very well liked. Most gays are. Anyway..if he were to make it...I can see it now:
Bich..oh no you din't....whf? You think you can just come on up in here and just shoot anyone? I don't think soooo.

Then there is my olsest son (he is gay) he has a very bad temper when provoked;

He would be like; Bich! Thesearemyfriendsandnooneshootsatthemandgetsawaywithit!tatatattat..wtfyouthinkling?tatatattattat You thinkyouso badcomeandgetsomeofthis tatatattat I'llkickyourassandfeedyoutothebugsyouthinkinyouallbadassbich!!(because when he gets mad, I can't understand him...I need to rewind him)

Gays in the military have been there for many years. My own son (in Iraq right now) knows some of them. He is in the military. He says they are the most loyal and follow orders better then most.

Now the women are a different matter. Not the foot soldier ones but the ones in office. They just piss him off. They have the ranking wrapped around their fingers. He is having problems with some of them now. They cause problems and do not follow rules. He out ranks them and cannot make them follow orders. He is on the verge of taking it way higher to get results. He says they act like they are on vacation and nothing is real to them. Like a war! They break rules all the time and have late night parties in their dorms, keeping them awake.

Alexander the great was gay...well known. There are also other well known leaders that were gay and found out later.

Now if you want to have a real fighter on your side....hpoe for a lesbian...(don't take any offense) those gals can and will open a can of whoopass. I just saw it happen again this last weekend. Three of them and one big ole boy. The women when the cops got there were like; he hit a woman. lol They took away three women in cuffs, and around the corner was a woman an a man. The woman was bleeding and cut up...but the man...oh man...he was all beat up. Bloody, bruised, bumps all over his head, his chin was bleeding as well. He was cuffed. That gal whipped him all over the place. He was a big guy.

I go to gay clubs...these gay guys many of them are big brawny and bold. Tough hombres.

Obviously the people who are against the don't ask don't tell policy have never been in the military. If you live on the base in the barracks you do not have the option to choose your roomates. When I lived in Norfolk I had two roommates in a small room that were assigned to me that I had never met.In the couple of years I was there I had no less than 20 different roommates over that time. Many of them were people I would rather not be around for various reasons. The last person in the world I would want as a roommate is a gay man.I would not want to come into the room and have to endure gay porn on the TV,nor would I want to have to see gay magazines and books laying around.Rumors would start I was also gay since I had a gay roommate and the military must have put us together for a reason. This would cause alot of discomfort and stress among my friends and co workers.

If you have been in the military you know sleeping around with other people(especially in your own command)is rampant. There is alot of flirting, rule breaking, and messing around when there is men and women assigned to the same command. It is not uncommon to hear stories of who is sleeping with who on a daily basis.I had alot of women on my command and I spent alot of time with those women working and then standing a 4 hour watch with them.Needless to say flirting, sexual talk, and many other things was not uncommon.Working with gay men and having to endure their flirting or sexual stories is not something I would want to experience and would not want to hear.

If you have ever been aboard a Navy ship or a submarine you know things are very cramped and privacy is very limited. It is not uncommon for ships or submarines to have more people then beds are available and therefore you have people sleeping in torpedo tubes,on the floor,or anywhere where it is quiet. If you do not want to sleep in places other than the racks then you may have to "hot rack" with a total stranger. The term "hot rack" refers to a person waking up from sleep and leaving his bunk and then another person immediately taking over his bed still warm. This could go on for months if space is not avalible.Needless to say I don't think people would want to hot rack with a gay man.

Other things that do not go well in the military.

Calling the enemy a "silly goose" and saying you will "slap him silly".

Rainbow flags on tanks and uniforms.

Not being able to march because your anus hurts from last night.

Shopping for clothes in the women's section at the exchange.

Going to a party and wanting to watch movies like Maid in manhattan,Milk, and The notebook instead of First blood,Evil dead, and the Deer hunter.

Sorry to say this, but...you piss me off just alittle. Your view of gays is so slighted. Your own fears worry me.

Gay men have more respect than you at this point. They would not be playing it like you say. They would most likely want to stay in an even more cool position to keep their jobs.
I guarandamn tee you...there were gays in the navy as well. I have navy members in my family. I have heard them talk of it. Knowing, but not talking about it.
Get over yourself man.....you worry too much.

As for not being in the military..I have not...but many family members have been and are. I feel it is a problem with some men for reasons other than being afraid of being liked by a man. Comfort in ones own sexuality would give no mind to a gay man, in my opinion. Not saying that a straight man with a problem with gays is gay himself...just not comfortable in his own skin.

Silly goose? Now that sounds like my mother. I never hear a gay man say he will slap someone.

Oh...I went to a party yesterday full of gays....no one was watching those kinds of movies..it was that new friday the thirteenth movie and laughing all the way through it. I hate those movies...so I went outside a lot. The food was excellent, the company fun and loving. A good time was had.

Thats right you have never been in the military and have no idea what you are talking about.Active people in the military don't want them there. That's why there is never any support from anyone other than the gays in the military. When I was working for the Army we would talk about gays in the military and they were so strongly opposed to them they would rather fight alone than have them as a back up.Say what you want but you try having a gay pride parade on a military base you will probably end up shot, beaten,or thrown in jail.

Yellow, I know I said I would leave, and I lied, my credibility is shot. But do you honestly believe you want to tinker with a military that took down Hitler and Japan, at the same time. Go ahead, but the military has always been best, left alone. That is the best policy, I gave my personal opinions and take the bashing from non vets. But I have yet to see a large group of vets support overturning the way things currently are. The vets are the ones that I listen to, because they know. Sure a few are against it, but hundreds of thousands currently serving are for it...easy one here. I will leave now. It takes me a while sometimes. Sorry for hogging the thread.
