My back yard is being taken over by some sort of HUGE night birds. Every night they keep me up calling to each other. I went out on my back deck earlier and saw 3 seperate birds swooping from tree to tree. One landed in my yard and appeared to be atleast 2.5 feet tall. I never see or hear them during the day. At first I thought they were owls but i've never heard an owl make the sound these birds do. My porch light isn't bright enough for me to get a good look at them and I don't own a strong enough flash light. What could these things be. I'm afraid to walk my dog out there when he needs to go at night. I am so scared I had to walk out to my pool to turn on the pump w/an umbrella over my head tonight. As if an umbrella would protect me from such huge birds.

What are these things?!? Any wild life types out there have an idea?

I don't know if you live near any type of lake or ocean could be loons? But call some wildlife place and find out what species of birds are out at night.

Sounds like vultures... There's probably a dead something in your area attracting them... They're the only birds that size that are active at night.

I'm in the mountains here I tried looking up night birds and listened to all sorts of calls but nothing sounds like these birds or is as big. I'll definetly be calling someone tommorow. I don't want my little mini doxie to get carried off by some jersey devil bird or something.

no, it is not loons, that is for sure! loons are out early morning usually, at they have a very distinct sound. I live on the south shore of Lake Superior, so yes, I do live by a lake.

I would be calling the extension office and/or the DNR...

yuk! that would creep me out for sure!

If you're in the mountains... They're probably eagles, or hawks. I've never heard of them being active at night though. The best way to tell... They have a very high pitched squeek/screech.

I thought of that too there is a cow pasture right across the river from my backyard. The call doesn't sound like a vulture or a buzzard. I'm going to try to make a recording of the sound they are making. I wonder why I would only hear or see them at night though. Don't they come out during the day? I know I sometimes see buzzards on the sides of the road near my house during the day.

Yeah, I wonder if they are turkey vultures. Might be trying to get a nice drink out of your pool. I know the bats do that at night, swoop down on pools to get water. Sounds scary!

I thought about cranes to as i've seen them in the river behind the house in the past but the bird I saw tonight did not have the typical long legs you see in a crane.

I checked out turkey vulture calls and the sounds are different.

I just recorded the birds outside with my cheapo camera so im about to see what I was able to get i'll post a link to the vid if it comes out.

They could be crows or even ravens roosting at night And you spook them when you go outside.

I've never seen a raven or a crow that was almost 3foot tall.

Definetly not a crane these don't sound or look like cranes.

I only saw the silhouette in the dark of this bird flying 3 times and on the ground once. It did not have long legs .

I'm looking through the list my dog is going crazy over the sounds. lol
