at least its not crack, meth, ecstacy, or anything worse than pot

People that use those drugs started with pot.

How do you know? Were you there?

I worked in a drug rehab. I also have friends in recovery. Yes, they all started with pot.

I've been to rehab twice. Me and 99% of the people I know, and have asked what was there "gateway" drug. The answer is always alcohol. People tend to forget that alcohol is indeed a drug. If anybody wants to point the finger at "what causes users to graduate to experiment with harder drugs?"...it should be alcohol. JMO.

I have been thinking about this post and thought I would address what I would tell a parent if I they found out their kid were smoking pot.

Since have kind of a wide range of maturity to conver but that kids are starting smoking younger and younger and what would be approriate for one age might be too harsh for another adapt accordingly.

Probably the first thing I would do is keep my mouth shut for a few days if the information didn't come directly from the kid.

Since it is a controlled substance if I found it in my home, weather it is there room or not, I would conviscate it. Pretty hard to deny when you have the proof right there in your possession.

Then I would start paying real close attention to see if they are sneaking out of the house when you don't know. You would be amazed how many kids run the streets at night when parents think they are at home.

I would also start checking the Odometer on the car. That is another shock for many parents that their kid is driving to a dope spot with the family car, sometimes in the daytime others at night. Yes they sell pot on or near most school campuses but kids don't always have a lot of forethought about buying.

The next thing I would do is do an inventory of what your kid has and doesn't have of the things you have bought them. Kids barter and if expensive things are disappearing that is where the money is coming from.

Auditing what your kid does with the money they earn or are given helps to know if they have any expensive habits. Most kids that stray find the money laying around in purses, jackets, and the typical stashing places is more than enough to buy drugs with for at least awhile. Lot of times gift cards and cash come from Grandparents and non-custodial parents. I have seen parents hand over chid support, social security, welfare, and grocery checks to kids. The absence of cash will not keep a child drug free. I have seen pot being grown on parents property and they didn't know what it was.

Parents do need to educate themselfs what it looks like, and generally what the facts are. Your
kids should not know more than you do.

That is where finding out more about your child is in order. Paying attention to who there friends are and when they change, what their teachers and school advisiors can tell you, as a parent you have a right to see their; grades, attendance, and disciplenary records besides access to their locker. Same goes for people you leave in charge of your kid; sometimes they can tell you a lot about your kids. If your kid is failing a lot of times you can develope eyes in the back of your head.

Next you want what you do find tested. The real shocker is what you are likely to find laceing the pot. I would check first about what your local laws are before I revealed how much you found but the important thing is you don't know if there is more until you go through stuff with a fine tooth comb. You could find that it is just pot or pretty much the sky's the limit. You might pass right over drugs and not even realize it is drugs or drug paraphanilia. But it will keep you from saying oh it is just pot when it could something much more dangerous.

You also want to clean up your own act if you smoke. Many kids get the majority of there initial pot from a family member. Don't let anyone tell you that you can't have rules about things one way for you and another for them.

Last but not least you need to have your kid tested. Earlier I alluded to the importance of knowing your child's health and your pediatrician can help. Often they have books on the subject but they can also tell you if your kid is useing or holding.

Depends - if you smoked weed when you were young or stayed clean. My teen asked me and I admitted to it, because I won't lie to her. I did tell her the trouble it led to and why I wish I hadn't wasted so much time and energy on it, though.

My son was smoking pot.He was doing it in my house. Now he is 18 and he have not been doing it lately(I think).I told him if he contiune doing it in my house,I was going to put his ass out.He was also hanging around the crowd.I try my best to check out his friends and the kind of parents they have.He is in the process of going to Job Crops and I hope it work out.I hope it work out for you too. Some people told me that can't see theirself putting their kids out.I can.If they can't get theirself together then they need to leave. My son was smoking pot at age 16(might be sooner than that).I try to get him a mentor and try to keep him busy so he will not have time to hangout.noway

If your son was smoking pot in your house at 16, why would you allow it? I think you need to get him a mentor right away!!
I think the problem with parents is they try to be friends with their children instead of being the parent. You are a role model to your children, if you are out doing stupid things..what do you think your children are going to do?
I am honestly shocked at some of the responces on here...all I have to say is thank goodness none of these people will be around my children. Its just a shame the way some people think that pot is not addicting..but to each their own JMO

My kids are older teens, and they have all been through that stage. I have smoked pot in the past to rid my self of nasty migraines that lasted for days and medicine did nothing. My kids are aware of that, and have never used it as an excuse. I do talk with my kids and they have always come to me for my opinion and advice. (some i would have preferred not to hear at the time, sexual or things they are curious about) Even when they know i won't agree with it. They have never tried other drugs, and have no interest in trying them.
If a kid is determined to do something, they will do it with or with out your knowledge or approval.
I think it's better to keep all communication open, so that they can come and talk to you about what they feel or think no matter what. And yes they can come up with some pretty wild thoughts or idea's. But if you as parents take the time to open that door and talk to them openly, they will learn to come to you with any problems or thoughts they have.

I would calmly and nonthreateningly find out where they got the pot..Take them with me to see the dealer and have them watch while I explained very physically what would happen if I ever found pot on my kid again and then call the local law to clean up the mess....

Require them to learn everything about THC and the effecting chemicals in marijuana. Teach them responsible use, if and only if they would continue to use it...first thing first, they would have to learn just about everything associated with marijuana.
