Topic: Military Poll

Discussion on another thread has prompted me to start this one. I would like an honest answer to the following question by those currently serving and those that have previous served in the military. It's my opinion that the majority of us joined the military out of patrotism towards our great country. Remember honest answers please. Why did you join the military?

Way back in 81, when I started my senior year, I thought two things about the military. One was that it would get me out of Illinois for a while, and two, that my Dad, 2 uncles, both Grampas, and my brother-in law had all served, and had all seen combat.

I figured if they did it, I owed my country the same.

As a person that saw combat, I would have rather shot them with paint pellets, but that was not an option. Had they have not been shooting at us, we could have left there peacfully.

I never found myself in actual combat.
So, No.
I am not a murderer.
I wouldn't consider all of the other Marines (including my brother)and military personnel "murderers" either.
They fight to protect our country. They fight to protect your rights. They fight to allow your a$$ to sit safely at home behind a computer and express your freedom of speech.

Now I have a question for you:
If the war is an issue for you and you consider those fighting the front lines "murderers", why don't you take their place?
I would love for you to go to Iraq with your flowers and love and see just how far you get.

Voluptous I think u may have misunderstood my question. In the other thread titled "Minorities" the word murderer instead of soldier was used several times. I in no way feel that anyone that has the courage to join the military is a murderer. They are a soldier, Marine, Sailor, or Airman doin their duty.

Hey,
We tend to think of the morbid points of that sentence when in actuality he just means if he is given the opportunity.
They rarely get to write or call.
It doesn't mean anything else.
Some of us were born / destined to be soldiers. I can't explain it much...just a feeling we have.

I joined the Air Force right out of High School, one because it was a family tradition and two I wanted to actually give back to my country.
I do not in anyway consider myself or anyone else who has served or is servin a murderer. And I would much rather help than kill people.

I didn't read that thread and I was given the heads up by ElWoodsully that you are a Vet.
My comments apply to ALL those that don't support our troops.

Thank you for clarification.

My son has followed in his parents footsteps and joined the Army last summer at the tender age of 19. He hasn't gone to Iraq yet and I pray he never will. My prayers with ur son that he returns home safely to u along with all the other sons and daughters.

I served out of patriotism. Strictly to say "thanks" for the freedoms we all enjoy. As for a being a :murderer"? Well, I suppose that when you are getting shot at, with intent to kill, and you shoot back, I don't consider it murder, more like self defense. I was willing to die so the slugs who did not serve could sit safely in their little cottages and complain and bad mouth the very people wh made it possible for them to sit there. I agree with the poster above who wished that the anti-military/anti war people would take their love and flowers to Iraq, only I say any combat zone, and try to utilize them to calm their enemies.

I simply started this thread cause I got sick and tired of the liberals on the other thread talkin my military brothers and sisters down. I want them to know that we didn't join merely to fill our pockets, there are a variety of reasons and most certainly none are because we want to kill people.
That's the great thing about this country, they can sit behind their computers and enjoy their freedom of speech because of those who came before us and those who will come after. They seem to forget that.

HEY SAM !! You know the ONLY reason you're able to post here, and be on the internet, and be able to pick the type of food you want? Because a Canadian man or woman went and joined the military, so that your less than polite rump could stay behind your little computer screen, and throw barbs at them.
