Discussion on another thread has prompted me to start this one. I would like an honest answer to the following question by those currently serving and those that have previous served in the military. It's my opinion that the majority of us joined the military out of patrotism towards our great country. Remember honest answers please. Why did you join the military?

To kill Iranians!!

I needed the discipline.

...I wasn't a troublesome child...I just found myself working for Mc Donald’s and I didn't want to stay in that situation.
I knew I needed more.
Once I joined, it gave me and my ENTIRE family a great sense of pride.

They all needed the money , the benefits , and because they were useles in a civilian life .
Congratulations all . Please keep on lying to yourself and to all the world .

HEY SAM !! You know the ONLY reason you're able to post here, and be on the internet, and be able to pick the type of food you want? Because a Canadian man or woman went and joined the military, so that your less than polite rump could stay behind your little computer screen, and throw barbs at them.

flowers flowers flowers flowers flowers
I knew there was a reason I liked u Sully!!!!

Oh...And WATCH your rotted mouth Sam.
My brother is a college educated young man...not a middle aged Blob attacking others from a safe computer at home.

Why couldn't you have been sight seeing on 911...?
The twin towers would have been a GREAT spot for you to eat lunch.

...And YES, my brother was there too.
He wasn't out of school yet and he HELPED pick up the dismembered bodies of the victims in NYC.

Again, I ask you, what have you done?!?!?!

I simply started this thread cause I got sick and tired of the liberals on the other thread talkin my military brothers and sisters down. I want them to know that we didn't join merely to fill our pockets, there are a variety of reasons and most certainly none are because we want to kill people.
That's the great thing about this country, they can sit behind their computers and enjoy their freedom of speech because of those who came before us and those who will come after. They seem to forget that.

I think it is great people join the military. I know absolutely nothing about politics or what happens overseas.

Though I hate hearing people call soldiers murderers! To murder is to kill without reason or for selfish intent. War is not selfish intent. War is Kill or be Killed. The way to justify that is like competing in something and there being a winner. You are surviving.

Although I ask anyone to name how many wars we had to fight for our freedom, other than the USA winning it' independence. I don't remember my freedom being under threat, except when I got grounded as a kid.

I feel for those of you who lost someone, and I know I am pissing people off as you read this. I only do this to see your points of view and to be educated if I come off as ignorant, in which I ask you to forgive me. But most people do join the military for the money, experience, etc... I rarely hear people these days say "Hey, I am going to join the military, because I want to defend the country". This is was a charity act, and you didn't get paid... Us Americans would be S.O.L. It's the mostly the money and benefits... Not so much the deed.

Okay now attack me so I can be educated and see your thoughts. bigsmile

Oh yeah, and for the record. My dad served in Vietnam. He talked me out of joining the military when I was gung ho about it. He made good points from his experiences, so I didn't enlist.

In Germany they are required to serve 2 yrs in the military or in some sort of civilian capacity in order to have college paid for. During this 2 yrs they are givin a salary and benefits. Only difference Americans volunteer to serve, Germans are required. Believe it or not there are some who serve because they feel duty bond not pocket bound.

Hey, RS. The pay isn't that great. I knew alot of people that were getting financial assistance just to pay for diapers, and formula.

College benefits, on the other hand, are great. But, to qualify for those, you have to be willing to do what your military tells(not asks) you to do.

We went to war in both WWI, and WWII, for America's freedom. Along with the War of 1812, where we fought the Brits for the third, and last time. They are now our strongest allie.

PS. Tell your Dad for me.. Welcome Home, Brother, you raised a good son.. (YOU, RS).

Yeah but I speak in means of Americans. What if, just maybe... People with money invest into oil and other things that having Wars increase to fill their little greedy pockets. Having wars that benefit wealthy people on both sides of the map who sacrifice innocent and eager youth with promises of a better future.

So you have youth who want a better future, and greedy men plotting wars to increase wealth. If anything, I do not believe people should knock our soldiers, but the men behind the cause, for whatever you may disagree upon that they find just.

That was 30 yrs ago, and nothings changed in the ME!
I was young, American, and had a naive misconception of what patriotism really was!

Thank you so much and thank you for educating me in this matter. See, I am not a soldier, so I do not know. I have friends that are and were, but to them, it is just a job. So that is all I know.

And to all, I hope I do not or have no offended you. I am simply ignorant and seek your knowledge when I speak out.

I am glad we have people like you, and I am glad to have met you as well.

Really, you know people with college and higher education join the military. Engineers, doctors, dentists. My ex gf is in dental school and considering being a dentist in the military. You saying all these people are useless in a civilian life. I disagree. I bet they could all get well paying jobs, better pay than the military has to offer, yet some chose to go into the military instead.

I do not recall anyone who said they joined out of patriotism, we had a couple of ROTC guys who wanted to be officers they ended up getting crabs and they burned there sheets. They both shared a rack one one top one on bottem boy did we have fun with that. We called them itchy and scratchy

RS, I merely wanted to show that there is nothing wrong with being paid to serve in the military. Yes there are those that join because for them jobs are scarce. There are a vast variety of reasons that people join the military.
