if stem cells get thrown away why not use them as research? U no why they are not doin that cause they no that they can create new treatments n cures but they no that the pharmacutical companies will lose money if they have cures!

as long as abortion is an option stem cell research should be pursued

there is a double standard otherwise

The best most promising stem cells come from embryos!
As in the in vitro fertilization clinics which fertilize thousands of embryo's for implanting into the wombs of women who can not conceive any other way! They implant thousands for a higher success rate and only implant two or three. The rest are frozen but will not live long and are then thrown in the medical waste bin and disposed as garbage!

Bush under the influence of the Christian Right (evangelical mostly) refuses to allow federal funding! He signed a bill in 2001 shortly after taking office and refuses to bend! That is the who, what, when, and why about it!drinker

To throw them away like that when they could be used to save lives is immoral to me!

They all are in it to make $$$ from people that are dyin n have need meds instead of using these stem cells for cures n treatments they whether just kill us all instead!

That's because Bush eliminated the use!

Here's the part you left from your post yesterday Lindy!

Embryonic Stem Cell Advantages
1. Flexible—appear to have the potential to make any cell
2. Immortal—one ES cell line can potentially provide an endless supply of cells with
defined characteristics
3. Availability—embryos from in vitro fertilization clinics

The best stem cells come from Embryos!
These are found and used in in vitro fertilization clinics by the millions. noway noway noway

TALK ABOUT TWISTED!! RE-READ MY ENTIRE POST ON ADULT STEM CELL AND THE FACT THAT EMBRYONIC STEM CELL HAS NOT CURED ANYTHING!!

My God.

Lindyy

Ignore the fact that Bush wont allow embryonic stem cell research!
Talk about twisted!

IT IS BECAUSE IT KILLS A HUMAN LIFE!! AN EMBRYO IS THE START OF A HUMAN LIFE!!!!!!!!

Even Winx just said "Nobody is killing babies for stem cell research."

sick sick sick sick

(((Lindyy))flowerforyou What I meant is that women are not having abortions for stem cell research. Also, women are not getting pregnant and having abortions for stem cell research. Nobody is killing babies for stem cell research and nobody has.

In my city the OB/GYNs are encouraging pregnant women to donate umbilical cords for reseach. Some of the cord blood is used for very sick children. What is not needed is used for research. It was exciting for me to be part of that.

I hope that someday stem cell research can help paralyzed people walk again, cure Parkinsons and more.

Though both Fanta and Lindy make valid points, I think you all are missing the most important part. If it weren't for the servicemen and women risking their lives for our freedom, The United states would have the ability or the freedom to do any stem cell research. So everyone needs to thank a soldier for the sacrifices they make in order to give up the opportunity to speak our minds.

Well I must be confused then, because I'm not understanding how this war is supporting my freedoms and my rights. I support the troops in whatever job they do, because that is their job and they are just doing what they are told. But how is this war helping to support our freedoms? I don't see it benefiting America one bit.

This war benefits America by not allowing terrorism to continue. The freedom it gives you to speak your mind without being condoned for it or killed even. The freedom of walking down a street and not worrying if a suicide bombing is near you. The freedom of allowing you to have your opinion different from mine and that is ok. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and no one is right or wrong it is just that your opinion.flowerforyou

The terrorists are Bin Laden and gang. The war was originally about Saddam.flowerforyou

Winx, what you did is good regardless. drinker Did you read and understand about the ADULT stem cell and what it IS curing/healing?

I do not think you understand what EMBRYONIC STEM CELL RESEARCH IS. An embryo, Winx, is a human life in the embryo stage.

Embryonic stem cell has proven NOTHING. It has not cured or improved anything.

If you have time or REALLY want to know the TRUTH, look up/google JONI & Friends. Joni Eareckson Tada is my age, and has been a quadraplegic since age 17 due to a diving accident. She has a wonderful Christian international ministry that provides wheelchairs for the needy.

Joni is strongly opposed to EMBRYONIC STEM CELL. And, she is a great one to speak out against it, informing the public the TRUTH about it.

She is a wonderful strong Christian woman. Very well known in the Christian world.

Here is Joni Eareckson Tada's own testimony. I should have posted this earlier. This will put an end or should, to some of the comments of the opposing posters on this thread:

http://www.joniandfriends.org/press_box/Stem_Cell_Therapeudic_and_Research_Act_of_2005.pdf

"The Stem Cell Therapeutic and Research Act of 2005
Tuesday, December 20, 2005 - Joni Eareckson Tada

I want to applaud President Bush for recently signing the Stem Cell Therapeutic and Research Act of 2005. This new legislation will result in tremendous advancements in medical treatments using stem cells derived from a safe and ethical source: umbilical cord blood.

While politicians have been haranguing over stem cells from human embryos, cord blood research has quietly made steady and solid advancements. Cord blood transplants have already saved the lives of hundreds of children with select debilitating diseases.

More successful treatments may well be on the horizon as this legislation will establish a national databank of umbilical cord blood and bone marrow which will allow doctors to quickly find a match for patients who require stem cell therapies. This is good news for families who are looking to science for cures and treatments for their family members with various disabling conditions.

(PLEASE NOTE THIS, THOSE WHO DO NOT UNDERSTAND EMBRYONIC STEM CELL - this comment is inserted by Lindyy) There is no longer reason to waste precious research dollars on stem cell cures which kill human embryos; in fact, the prestigious journal Science noted on June 17, 2005, “It is nearly certain that the [human] clinical benefits of [embryonic stem cell] research are years or decades away. This is a message that desperate families and patients will not want to hear.”However, we celebrate with these families affected by disability who now can be encouraged that stem cell research truly is making advancements on their behalf.

All of us at Joni and Friends wish to thank the courageous efforts of the members of Congress who championed the passage of this bill. We are heartened that precious time and research dollars will now be channeled into a viable, safe, effective and most importantly, a truly ethical area of stem cell research. Joni Eareckson Tada - CEO/Founder Joni and Friends International Disability Center."

It is a shame that certain posters have twisted and taken out of context everything about this issue, to the point of blaming President Bush for everything, when, in reality, President Bush has done sooooo much for the advancement of Adult/umbilical cord/bone marrow research.

President Bush merely put a stop to the use of FEDERAL FUNDS to promote embryonic research. It is still going on under private funding, and as all could read from what I have posted, embryonic stem cells have proved NOTHING beneficial.

Such a shame people would rather have things twisted than the truth be known.

Lindy, do you think people dont know or cant find the truth for themselves, or are you really that uninformed?

Do you even know what in vitro is?
or how it is performed?

If so does your extreme religous views wish to stop that as well?

Do you think people have not watched Michael J Fox and Christopher Reeve speak out for this particular stem cell Research for years?

Christopher Reeve died waiting for and supporting embryonic stem cell research. Do you think he was misinformed by scientist and doctors?
No, I dont think so!
I dont think you understand, or if you do you must think everyone else is either A- stupid, or B-liars!

Personally I think perhaps your religious view are just so extreme you refuse to acknowledge the facts!

I mean really!
You are entitled to your opinion but to keep posting that everyone who doesn't agree with your opinion and seems a little knowledgeable where you fail to be, as having a twisted opinion is frigging crazy!

PFffttttt.........

LMAO,
Adult stem cells are very limited!
One day soon regardless of the pro-life road blocks, which are very ignoramus considering the facts, embryonic stem cell research will receive equal funding! When it does they will lead to cures and treatments that adult stem cell research can not achieve!
All the wasted years and trashed embryonic tissue caused by a group of religious fanatics is holding up remarkable advancements in medical science and causing people to die that might be cured!

You still haven't answered the questions I asked?
Try just one.
Would you stop in vitro fertilization if you could?

Mirror, Adult or Embryonic, and do you know the difference? Have you read the scientific data I have posted, i.e.:

http://www.stemcellresearchfacts.com/pros_cons.html
Stem Cell Research Facts

"Most importantly, adult stem cells have already been successfully used in human therapies for many years. *****As of this moment, NO therapies in humans have ever been successfully carried out using embryonic stem cells.***** New therapies using adult type stem cells, on the other hand, are being developed all the time. Here are but a few of the many examples of success stories using adult stem cells."

AND:

Joni Eareckson's testimony:

HOW MANY TIMES DOES SCIENTIFIC DATA HAVE TO BE POSTED SO THAT YOU CAN COMPREHEND THE TRUTH?

You are correct Lindyy...there is no reason why the govt. should put ANY tax dollars into stem cell research...if not for the moral grounds but that there is no scientific evidence that it has any effect at all on curing anything.

I cannot comment on stem cell research but I was almost moved to tears last summer in the airport witnessing the long line of soldiers at least 200(most were younger than my own children) boarding planes for Iraq. I watched the horseplay and the camaraderie with sadness because I know many of these newbies would never return or never be the same again. I was in HS during Vietnam and it disturbs me to see the lives of American youth wasted on these wars.

Tell that to the soldiers boarding that plane that their lives are wasted and hear what they have to say about that.

Stem Cells and Diseases
The Promise of Stem Cells

Studying stem cells will help us understand how they transform into the dazzling array of specialized cells that make us what we are. Some of the most serious medical conditions, such as cancer and birth defects, are due to problems that occur somewhere in this process. A better understanding of normal cell development will allow us to understand and perhaps correct the errors that cause these medical conditions.

Another potential application of stem cells is making cells and tissues for medical therapies. Today, donated organs and tissues are often used to replace those that are diseased or destroyed. Unfortunately, the number of people needing a transplant far exceeds the number of organs available for transplantation. Pluripotent stem cells offer the possibility of a renewable source of replacement cells and tissues to treat a myriad of diseases, conditions, and disabilities including Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases, spinal cord injury, stroke, burns, heart disease, diabetes, osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.
Have human embryonic stem cells successfully treated any human diseases?

Scientists have been able to do experiments with human embryonic stem cells (hESC) only since 1998, when a group led by Dr. James Thomson at the University of Wisconsin developed a technique to isolate and grow the cells. Moreover, Federal funds to support hESC research have been available since only August 9, 2001, when President Bush announced his decision on Federal funding for hESC research. Because many academic researchers rely on Federal funds to support their laboratories, they are just beginning to learn how to grow and use the cells. Thus, although hESC are thought to offer potential cures and therapies for many devastating diseases, research using them is still in its early stages.

Adult stem cells, such as blood-forming stem cells in bone marrow (called hematopoietic stem cells, or HSCs), are currently the only type of stem cell commonly used to treat human diseases. Doctors have been transferring HSCs in bone marrow transplants for over 40 years. More advanced techniques of collecting, or "harvesting," HSCs are now used in order to treat leukemia, lymphoma and several inherited blood disorders.

The clinical potential of adult stem cells has also been demonstrated in the treatment of other human diseases that include diabetes and advanced kidney cancer. However, these newer uses have involved studies with a very limited number of patients.
Participating in Research Studies

It is a shame that you feel because there are years left of research that it should not be pursued any further. Why don't you try educating yourself on the subject matter. We may be decades away from cures, but that does not mean we should abandon the idea. If you had someone you love dying of something that could be cured from this research, would you be still in opposition of its cure???
