WHat if I were to tell you that my desire to convert to Catholicism was led by the Holy Spirit.

I am a born again believer. My spiritual journey toward Catholicism was not born out of ignorance. I used to believe as many of you do that the Catholic church is the harlot church.

For those who do not take catholicism seriously and shrug it off as less than Christianity I suggestive you look into the conversion of Francis J. Bechwith. All Christians should read G.K. Chesterton as well C.S. Lewis. To those who are called to defend the faith read William Lane Craig as well as Peter Kreeft. Bechwith returned to Rome, C.S. Lewis was heavily influenced by Chesterton (a Catholic) and was pivotal in his conversion to Christianity, William Lane Craig and Peter Kreeft contend earnestly alongside each other in the defense of the faith (one a protestant and one a Catholic).

Then you have probably the greatest philosopher today, Alvin Plantinga. A protestant teaching in the philosophy department at the University of Notre Dame.

I went to a Catholic church once with my ex. Don't speak the language.
And seriously, with the history and behavior of the Catholic church, past and present, I think they are evil incarnate.
If you want to be a Christian, read the bible and talk to God, not a church.

I suggest you look into the history of the protestent (whom I love) church before you point fingers. Believe me it has not always been pretty. Remember that God will look throughly at the heart. Christianity has a sad history, becareful when you point the finger.

What was there before Catholicism separated?

Nubby, follow the leading of the Holy Spirit and be blessed.

flowerforyou

I like the advice from Jack2562,

{{{miguel}}}

I believe as Christians we can all find the things that unite rather than divide and love one another as Jesus loves us.

flowerforyou

I like your posts smiley. I wish we could all unite rather than divide.

The Pope is a "god" to Catholics. Prayer to dead saints? Prayer to Mary? Purgatory?

Many of the reasons I left the Catholic Church.

Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life!

Jesus is no longer on the Cross! Why do Catholics still have Him on it?

I used to have the same misconceptions about the catholic church you do. Much of is misunderstood or false. I agree that Jesus is the way, the truth and the life, Catholicism does not disagree with this.

I happen to be one who has a fair bit of knowledge. I love protestentism, but they have abandoned so much tradition.

Eljay said:
You've read the bible - and you're attempting to convince me that Hitlers actions were representative of a christain?

Forgive me if I say I don't believe you.

Eljay, the entre point of this being posted was to show you that there is NO clear cut consensus of opinion on what it entails exactly to be "saved". All of these passages are differing accounts and ALL were taken from the scripture.

How do we know that Hitler did not do many of these? We already know he was a Catholic and even wanted to be a priest in his childhood.

What must you do to be saved?

Say the right things.
For by thy words thou shalt be justified. -- Matthew 12:37

Do the right things.
And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life. -- John 5:29
For you render to each one according to his works. -- Psalm 62:12

I the Lord ... give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings. -- Jeremiah 17:10

When the wicked man turneth away from his wickedness ... and doeth that which is lawful and right, he shall save his soul. -- Ezekiel 18:27

For the Son of Man will come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and then He will reward each according to his works. Matthew 16.27

Then shall the King say unto them on his right hand, Come, ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in: Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me. -- Matthew 25:34-36

Who will render to each one according to his deeds. ... For not the hearers of the law are just in the sight of God, but the doers of the law will be justified. -- Romans 2:6, 13

For we must all appear before the jugment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad. -- 2 Corinthians 5:10

Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also transform themselves into ministers of righteousness, whose end will be according to their works. -- 2 Corinthians 11:15

The Father, who without partiality judges according to each one's work. -- 1 Peter 1:17

I will give unto every one of you according to your works. -- Revelation 2:23

And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. -- Revelation 20:12-13

Believe the right things.
A man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law. -- Romans 3:28
Therefore, being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. -- Romans 5:1

A man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ. -- Galatians 2:16

For by grace are ye saved through faith. -- Ephesians 2:8

Do and believe the right things.
Faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone. -- James 2:17

He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life -- John 3:36

Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved. -- Acts 16:31

Be born again.
Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. -- John 3:3

Hear the words of Jesus and believe in whoever sent him.
He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life. -- John 5:24

If thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. -- Romans 10:9

Follow the commandments (at least some of them).
If you want to enter into life, keep the commandments. He saith unto him, Which? Jesus said, Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Honour thy father and thy mother: and, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. -- Matthew 19:17-19
Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life. -- Revelation 22:14

Keep the commandments (at least some of them), give all your money to the poor, and follow Jesus.
And a certain ruler asked him, saying, Good Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life? ... Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honour thy father and thy mother. And he said, All these have I kept from my youth up.
...thou one thing: sell all that thou hast, and distribute unto the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, follow me.-- Luke 18:18-22

It is all about what authority you decide to accept and believe. If you decide to accept and believe the Church authority who tells you that the Bible is the word and work of God then that is your choice.

The problem seems to be that not everyone accepts that authority, and the ones who do are put in a position to have to defend their authority.

Hence all the debates about the Bible.

Science just wants to learn the truth about things and when what they learn does not support the Bible, people get upset.

Science is not the enemy of the Bible. It does not seek to destroy religion. It seeks truth.

I agree - though I think the bible itself speaks of it's authority. I don't need a leader of a church to tell me the scriptures are the word of God - the text tells me that. I long ago abandoned any church as a representative authority. I just see them as a group of people with a devotion towards God. Whatever God they may believe. I get my God from the bible - not a church.

I will add that science is about the "How" of things, and not the "Why". Religion is more about the "Why" - and not the "How".

The two are really not related.

You get your god from the Bible? Who do you think put the Bible together? .... THE CHURCH.

If you think god did it, think again. (It was men.)

I would think you would know that.

These men were under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

5 Pages about atheism, 25 on Hitler. laugh

Isn't that how it always works though?

Eventually someone runs out of enough "proof" for their side, and they bring up Hitler, then it just takes off from there. .

drinker

Though I don't agree with Krimsa's assessment of Hitler, I defend her right to bring it up on every thread she post in.

I only argue against the believers who insist that he was not a Catholic. Why shouldn’t I? Its misinformation.

Excuse me - but you argue that he was a Christian - which he was not.

After fixing your errors, All you have "proved" is that Hitler doesn't fit your definition of a Christian. But, by your definition, no one is a Christian. . .

So how does Hitler fit your "definition/understanding" of a Christian?

From the quotes of Hitler's that I have read, and that Krimsa has provided on here, I believe that Hitler was a Christian all his life.
I also feel it is not up to you to decide who is/isn't/was/wasn't a Christian.

By there fruit you will know them.

"Paul's letter to the Corinthians is dated by Christians and skeptics alike at around AD 54 or 58, but Paul must have received the creed before he could have recorded it in his letter. In fact, Paul tells us that he gave this Gospel to them earlier. Christians and skeptics alike agree Paul visited Corinthians and gave them the Gospel orally about AD 51.
Paul tells us that about 3 years after his conversion, he went to Jerusalem and saw Peter and James (Galatians 1:18-19). It's likely that Paul received the creed while in Jerusalem. If Christ was crucified in AD 30, then Paul would have been converted a short while later (perhaps 33-35, though more likely as early as 31 and no later than 33), placing his tript o Jerusalem around 36-38. Obviously Paul would have spoken with the two apostles about the Gospel, an assumption which is strengthened by the specific mention of meeting with Peter, James and the Gospel 14 years after his first journey (Galatians 2). So Paul likely received the creed no later than AD 38 directly from the apostles.
It's possible that Paul receied the creed even earlier, perhaps while in Damascus 3 years earlier than his trip to Jerusalem. However, as mentioned above, the creed contains a number of items which indicate Semitic origin, making Jerusalem a more likely location."

1 Corinthians 15:3
3For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance[a]: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, 5and that he appeared to Peter, and then to the Twelve. 6After that, he appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers at the same time, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep. 7Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles, 8and last of all he appeared to me also, as to one abnormally born.

This creed dates earlier than Mark.

"Though Russian novelist and essayist Aleksander Solzhenitsyn gave his Templeton Address in 1983, his evocative words resound two decades later:

"I heard a number of older people offer this explanation for the great disasters that had befallen Russia: 'Men have forgotten God; that's why all this has happened'…. If I were asked today to formulate as concisely as possible the main cause of the ruinous revolution that swallowed up some 60 million of our people, I could not put it more accurately than to repeat: 'Men have forgotten God.'"

"What is more, if I were called upon to identify the principal trait of the entire 20th century, I would be unable to find anything more precise than to reflect once again on how we have lost touch with our Creator." (Footnote 1: Quoted from Aleksander Solzhenitsyn, "Men Have Forgotten God" condensed by Readers Digest (September 1986)"

"But in the new science, the individual is like a cork bobbing on the currents of giant forces: evolution, brain chemistry, stress and upbringing…. At the extreme, many scientists now doubt that there is such a thing as free will… Once, Cho Seung Hui would have simply been condemned as evil…but now the language of morality is replaced by the language of determinism…. Responsibility shifts to wider forces.… In short, the killings at Virginia Tech happen at a time when we are renegotiating what you might call the Morality Line, the spot where background forces stop and individual choice … begins…. The killings happen at a moment when the people who explain behavior by talking about biology, chemistry, and social science are assertive and on the march, while the people who explain behavior by talking about individual character are confused and losing ground.

He ends his article by saying: “But it should be possible to acknowledge the scientists’ insights without allowing them to become monopolists…. There still seems to be such things as selves which are capable of making decisions.… It’s just that we no longer have any agreement about what they are.”"

"In the commentary just below his is one titled “A Killer on the Campus”, by Barbara Oakley. She brings her excellent article to a close with the words: “This is about evil, and about how our universities are able to deal with it as a literary subject but not as a fact of life.”"
