Same thing you would do meeting a stranger in person. Introduce yourself briefly and ask a question that requires more than a yes or no answer. That should get the conversation started. If it doesn't move on. Tough lesson to learn, but better if you learn it early.

I don't think that someone posting a silly comment in a "smart" thread automatically kills the subject. If it does, then I am probably guilty, but everyone has their own sense of humor and sometimes I see something in a thread that was meant to be serious, but it trips something in my brain that makes me say something inane.

There is a difference though if they deliberately post something snide or insulting.

Profile looks good to me so far. You might want to add some interests and what are you looking for specifically in a partner.

If you do cold emailing, I suggest changing the subject line to something that pertains to her profile, ie..so you shoot professional fireworks shows that is cool.
