Whay do men say they are looking for a "female" instead of a lady or a woman? I am talking about in their profiles where they don't have to click a box....where you can use any word your want to use. It sounds kind of degrading to me...like they are looking for a pet instead of a person. When I see that in an ad, I get turned off immediately. Just wanted to know any other thought on this.....

Sometimes we don't have a choice of women or female. Most of the sites I see only give me the option of "female".
Ok, I'm lookin' for a Lady! |

mmmm maybe because thats the only option JSH gives you...would be different if you had more options...

I think that alot of guys do it subconsciously without thinking about the way that it sounds. |

Ok, I can understand that. It does seem strange that a guy would say he's looking for a female rather than a woman. AW'RIGHT GUYS...LISTEN UP! |

I have found that men with a military background (several ex'es were military) always use "female" instead of woman or lady when they write or talk. They have been programmed to do that. I'm sure it has something to do with desensitizing them, but it is very annoying. I wonder if women in the military refer to all men as "male". Somehow I doubt it. Any military women out there to clarify this for me?

I used to be in the PA state police and was also trained to refer to people with mismatched chromosomes as male, but there is a time and a place for everything. Looking for a mate is not a time to be cold and harsh.

Yeah, "female" is a bit too detached and clinical-sounding for me....

I use both Lady and Woman in my profile, it's a respect thing with me

maybe it's to prevent people from backing out based off of "lady" or "woman"?
i'm NOT a lady...so i would avoid those that are looking for one. "female" seems to fit all of those... |

Any military women out there to clarify this for me? This is correct to a point. And I am certainly guilty of it. Then you also have to consider the whole "politically correct" thing into the equation. Even a lot of word processing software will hit you on words like 'gal' as being too 'gender specific.' I was raised (programmed) to think that all 'females' were 'ladies.' But real life experience has taught me that is not always the case. Just like all 'males' are not 'gentlemen.' True story: I opened the door for a 'Lady' just recently. Just like I was raised to do. And she went totally crazy on me. Said she didn't need a man to open doors for her. Now - was she a lady? |
