Topic: Your Traditional NYE Foods & Snacks? | |

NYE... are there traditional foods in your country, whether or not you eat them?
What's the custom to eat or drink, not at 24.00 per sé, but during NYE? In The Netherlands we traditionally eat Dutch doughnuts. These are made from similar dough as the doughnut but they're round and typically with raisins (yuk!). These days you can also buy (or make) them without raisins. And apple fritters/beignets have become traditional too, and you can now also buy beignets with other filling like pineapple, vanilla cream, banana etc. I only ever make or buy beignets with either apple, pineapple, or vanilla & berry filling. They look like this: |

In Germany, we have jam filled donuts at midnight. In rural areas, the local bakery will hide a penny in one of them.
I have prepared some Hawaii toast for dinner later, which is more like a family tradition. |

I think they should move NYE to the Summer so I could go to Times Square in NY and watch the ball drop and not freeze. Sit there eating pepperoni pizza and grab the nearest female at the stroke of midnight for that all important smooch!

But a wonderful tradition! And you got your own family way, nice! Frohes neues Jahr!! |

On the southern United States it's tradition to eat black eyed peas on New Year's Day for good luck. If not then then some other kind of bean.

During the summer most South Africans do a braai (pronounced 'bry-i'), which is the equivalent of a barbecue. A great deal of red meat, potato salad and green salads. Beer, wine and champagne are a staple for New Year's Eve. I think most people do far more drinking than eating.
Personally, I enjoy light snacks and stay far away from excessive red meat. Happy New Year Crystal and thank you for creating this thread. I enjoyed seeing everyone's responses. |

We did tequila enemas (Joking)...
Nah, I picked up some liquor store Mudslides and White Russians. NYE dinner was Pizza. NYD I fixed Polish Kielbasa and Rice in a Maple Bourbon sauce with crushed Pecans, peppers & onions. I usually fix some type of Pork and Sauerkraut in the slow cooker but decided to change it up. |
