When nothing is occupying your attention ... what is the first thing you reach for ???

Hold on .. I am going to read your mind .......

That was quick lol and a little unnerving .......hmmmm .. ..............Is it your cellphone ????

Apparently a survey by Microsoft claims it is (though also acknowledges variability with age).

http://time.com/3858309/attention-spans-goldfish/

They also claim that the average attention span has reduced and is now only 8 seconds (the attention span of a goldfish is 9 secondsbiggrin ) . Microsoft is attributing this reduction to a highly digitalised lifestyle on the brain .

On the upside .. thanks to the digital age .. multitasking is becoming easier (the article didn’t specify for menlaugh laugh ) but I am assuming that was intended and can only be a blessing to women all over the world

I didn’t time this post .. hopefully it takes less than 8 seconds to read:tongue:

On a serious note .. cellphones and iPads have become so commonplace ., it is difficult to imagine life without such devices . In everyday life activities .. it is rare not to see someone focused on their phone . Is it an addiction ???
How long can you survive without checking or using your phone.

As for me ... Hi I am blondey and I am addicted to my phone lolwaving

When talking about internet...
I look at my phone erm... like hardly ever?

But my PC is the first thing I switch on in the morning tongue2 so it starts up while I go back to the kitchen to make coffee, breakfast.

I have a PC, an android phone and an android tablet.
I use my phone as a phone only. I have internet shut off and removed the apps.
I use my tablet when power goes out, so, hardly ever.

My entire entertainment system runs thru my computer.
I'm not on it all day tho.
It sits idle more than I use it.
I get my most use at night when I am watching movies on it.
It powers my stereo system too.
I have a 7 channel sound system tuned to my room.

My phone sits on its charging pad and most of the time, it stays there when I leave. I only use my phone as a phone. I don't call people for days at a time.

I'm home-bound most of the time. Been that way for the last 10 years.
When I was working I had to carry a phone with me, felt like throwing it many times. I had to carry it but only used it when I had to.

I've seen people stressed out badly when they can't find their phones.
I see lil kids focused on their phones instead of 'normal' kid stuff.
People in Dr offices and such don't talk to each other anymore, they would rather be on their phones.

I won't interrupt someone on their phone so most of the time, there's no opportunity to start a conversation with them.
It contributes to the social isolation we see now.

Attention spans have shifted from the world around you to the world in the phone.
A lot of people can't compose a paragraph not written in text speak.
Many people won't read more than a few lines of text.
Phones have become the new shackles of society.
In one sense its comical, in another, its sad.

But, I believe people can do whatever they want.
Personally, I think y'all should put the phones down and live in the reality around you but I don't see that happening anytime soon.
To each their own.

I think the physical impact of being on a phone too much for internet etc. is FHP (Forward head posture) and poor vision.
You see more and more people with FHP and I suspect this will only get worse when the kids grow up.

I also run all entertainment via PC, including WhatsApp which is a must-have here, television, radio etc.
I love it but it does mean that when internet goes down I am stuck for everything. Thank goodness my provider is very reliable!

I have a PC , laptop and phone but I love that when I am out and about I can take my phone with me . I have unlimited data so no matter where I am or what I am doing I can check emails , respond to messages ., keep up with study / research commitments , stay in touch with the hospital or just relax and surf the net . Saves me so much time , when time is in demand. Since the earthquakes I would not be without my phone ., it is reassuring to know if there is an emergency I can respond and get up todate information . I also commute long distances and again always take my phone .

Lastly ...Wherever I go .. minglers go too lol biggrin

well Tom , I certainly panicked when I lost my phone during a run through the forest . I didn’t realise until I arrived home and went to check my messages . Had to back track through the forest (and it was a long run/overgrown track) but thankfully managed to find it . I now make sure it is secure and safe from all the bouncing around lol . I do try to be sensitive when I am socialising and although I love my phone I know when it is important to focus my attention elsewhere

Yep, one can do all that with it, and when I'm stuck outdoors and need it, I do it too. But as short as possible.
It'd probably be different if it wasn't for my neck injury. I simply cannot be on my phone for any longer than 5 mins really. Then I get into trouble (my head reacts and all goes noodle doodle).
Since I am not outdoors much I don't have to worry about it. I can't work due to the injury. And PC is one of the few things I can do without any trouble because it allows me to sit up straight with my neck & head.
Life with TBI is slightly different, hihi.
If I could work I'd probably also be on my phone's internet a helluva lot in between.
As it is, I have no email installed on my phone, just annoying to me, no banking app either.

Also, being on a phone is annoying cos you need reading glasses. I hate the danged things! I could do without for a long time cos I've had my eyes lasered in my 30s, but now I do need them, so without reading glasses is problematic.
