Topic: Are we creating a Demolition Man world for ourselves? | |
---|---|
Watching Demolition Man from 1993 is quite shocking if you overlay it with what's going on in the world right now and where the ones in control are steering us.
- The movie is set in 2032 for the most part, where Sylvester Stallone is brought back after 36 yrs of cryo. 2032 is this magical year, mentioned by both the spiritual world as the Elite, the New World Order. - In the movie people aren't allowed to touch, nor exchange bodily fluids. So no hugging, kissing, touching, and no kissing and no sex. We are currently getting brainwashed to be okay with keeping distance, not touching, hugging etc. - No consumption of meat, salt, alcohol, tobacco, and lord knows what else, as it's bad for you. Right now the vegetarian lifestyle is just forced upon us. Over here they are deliberately getting farmers out of business, using the climate crisis as an excuse. At the same time the shelves in supermarkets are getting crammed with 'vegetarian this' and 'vegetarian that'. Now if someone WANTS to be a vegetarian, no skin of my nose. But can we please CHOOSE? - In the movie you see everyone is coded, a chip. Rumours are that this is what the Covid vaccines are all about. If you don't have such a chip you cannot buy or pay for anything. So people are forced to. But that way they keep track of every single thing people do, where they are, AND even what they SAY!? So even when you swear it is registered and you are fined. But it also means everything you say is and can be monitored. No more freedom. What is left is what you see in the movie: a polite society with no violence, where life feels plastic, is carefully orchestrated and manipulated. Being alive but not living. When I watched this movie in 1993 it was like fiction and 'this will never happen!' But looking at what is happening to the world right now... We are getting awfully close to the "Demolition Man" scenario! Part of it are already being implemented or planned to very soon be implemented. Scary chit! |

Well, the three seashells is not something I'm looking forward to.
And... music has a long way to drop till we are playing only jingles from commercials. Big brother scenario has been gathering steam for years but that is usually attributed to "1984" by George Orwell. Some countries do have a 'seedy underground' but I don't think anyone is really eating rat yet. We are still very dependent on internal combustion engines. The big oil companies have a hand in that. Keeping their cash cow going. Prison reform has a very long way to go before stasis reprogramming is close to actual science. Cash is still an important component in the economy. Restaurants have a long way to fall before they are single corporation controlled. Much of the world is still addicted to high fructose corn syrup and over-eating, binge-eating and recreational drug and alcohol use. People still like steak dinners too much to stop wanting meat in their diet. Demolition Man depicts a closed society ran by a single entity. The world is still too chaotic and self-destructive for such a unified society to exist. Plus, even in the film it depicts a simultaneous utopian/dystopian dual society within the closed society system. The film is more of a fantasy film than a science fiction film. The comparisons you mention are selective to a closed select group and are not even close to the world reality. Granted, many people are health conscious lately but people still have choice if they live in the free world. |

I'm looking forward to eating rat burgers while singing commercial jingles.

I'm looking forward to eating rat burgers while singing commercial jingles. I'd eat the rat burger all right if I hadn't had any meat for yonks! The commercial jingles, however, are disconcerting. As are the clothes people wear btw. Freaky! |

I watched it recently on stream. They re-did it, kinda. When I watched it in the theatres every restaurant was taco bell. In the new streamed version KFC is dubbed in. And they said tacobell a lot in the movie.
You're absolutely right, Crystal. It's not almost demolition man - it is 2032 come early. It's almost a little worse.... People lose their jobs for having "wrong think" Everywhere you go is to be happy joy joy safe spaces. I think I'd rather take the fine. Also, the eggheads are building people eating robots, (bio-matter fueled robots.... but may as well be people eaters) so we can probably add in another movie in there, only we're all pussified and we lose. But we deserve what we get. Nobody has the sack to make changes. Elon Musk is the closest that can do something - but I think the juggernaut is bigger than him. |

I've seen the one I think is the original, where the restaurant was Pizza Hut. I do think we are much much closer to getting this society than some think. It is scary. I had no idea, as I hadn't seen the movie since 1993 and didn't remember all that much of it, so the recognition wasn't expected either. |

I think you are looking through rose-coloured glasses, and US glasses, hihi. The corn syrup thing is well known to be in everything in the USA, although I'm not sure if Americans themselves are aware of it and what it does. My daughter never bought any of these things when she lived in the US. You can get normal, healthy food, but you have to look for it and know what you should avoid. The "people will still eat steak dinners" is also more American scenario. Over here we don't eat steak very often, plus we eat much smaller pieces of meat, and smaller meals, than in the US. And don't forget, if the government is FORCING vegetarian food you have no choice. It means there's going to be less and less products with meat and eventually meat will become a rare thing, and likely expensive. We can buy what the government allows to be in the shelves, not what people want in the shelves. And the vegetarian movement is growing exponentially! We're getting close to the point that mentioning you eat meat is going to be very awkward. And health food stuff has been around for decades btw. The Americanism of fast food, junk food, ready meals etc. is relatively new here and I think most cook healthy food. Fresh greens and so on, many go to the health food stores and supermarket sell loads of Bio foods too. So it isn't 'some' that want healthy food, it's still quite normal here. And the vegetarian forced upon us has nothing to do with health. Government doesn't give a rip about our health. It's about GM crap and spreading that over the world so no single plant or tree can reproduce naturally anymore. GM ingredients are in many foods, and many plants and plant baulbs you buy have been GMed. Plants that used to come back and bloom are now all "once and that's it". The same goes for this seemingly peaceful society. That is the WORST and the one we're closest to! Social distancing, wearing face masks, working from home, only 1 visitor allowed, curfew from 9 pm till 5 am, etc. and breaking those rules gets you a serious fine. All that chit is just brainwashing people to get used to being in a straight-jacket and doing what you're told, or else! Once we're used to that -and most are by now- they can easily throw in more. You seem to think it's a free world, ... really? We can't do anything anymore, now they're going for our food too. And here farmers will have to go, because of government rules concerning the nitrogen crisis. They say cattle farmers produce too much of it and they're basically bankrupting them now with even stricter rules than they already had. Crop farmers will face the same fate, as they want the fields to build houses. Farmers have become a nuisance to society. According to government that is. So... WHAT free world? We don't have a free world. The fact that government can take all that was normal away just like that says we do NOT have freedom at all. We have what the ones in power give us. Allow us is a better word. None of these things that I talking about happening are 'what if' things, they ARE happening. In The Netherlands, but this is spoon-fed by the EU which is an extension of those in power that are behind the smoke screen in the US. This is not fantasy anymore. This IS happening. Combustion engines??? Here they are already implementing plans to get rid of ALL petrol/diesel cars. It will be mandatory at some point to have an electric car. They want to invest in another 2nd nuclear plant -which I'm totally 300% against. They are forcing us to no longer cook and heat our homes with gas. Oil companies have no say in this anymore. Cash is NOT a big part of normal life, hasn't been for nearly 2 decades now. It's all done by pin pass in shops, petrol stations, online banking etc. Our pin pass has become the norm shortly after 2000. One restaurant / shop owning all is far-fetched... What do you think Amazon is doing? It's putting ALL other businesses and shops out of business. It's cheaper, has more, every country now has its own Amazon. People will go for cheaper for the same item and not care to keep the other business going. There's ya 'one shop owns all'! It already exists. That movie isn't fantasy, it is scarily showing what is going on RIGHT NOW. 28 yrs after that movie came out... |

Reference IMdb Trivia for the film you will see it was not remade but had different versions. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0106697/trivia?ref_=tt_trv_trv Specifically: For some non-American releases, references to Taco Bell were changed to Pizza Hut, since the former was virtually unknown in many foreign countries at the time. This includes dubbing, plus changing the logos during post-production. Taco Bell remains in the closing credits. In both the Dutch and Swedish releases the subtitles still use Taco Bell while the sound and picture have been altered as above. Also, when using closed captioning on cable television, references to Taco Bell are changed to Pizza Hut.
A few other entries: Hungarian science fiction writer IstvΓ‘n Nemere says that most of Demolition Man is based on his novel Holtak Harca (Fight of the Dead), published in 1986. In the novel, a terrorist and a counter-terrorism soldier are cryogenically frozen, then awakened in the twenty-second century to find violence has been purged from society. Nemere claimed that a committee proved that seventy-five percent of this movie is identical to the book. He chose not to sue because it would have been too expensive for him to hire a lawyer and fight against major Hollywood forces in the United States. He also claimed that Hollywood plagiarized works of many Eastern European writers after the fall of the Iron Curtain, and that he knows the person allegedly responsible for illegally selling his idea to the filmmakers.
It was rumored there was going to be a sequel "Demolition Man 2", and it would take place after this movie, in which John Spartan and Lenina Huxley would have married and Jackie Chan would play the main antagonist, replacing Wesley Snipes, but the sequel did not happen. There was a prequel written long ago, and was thought to flop, so it was never made. The prequel was believed to start out with John Spartan starting to go after Simon Phoenix.
In Kuwait, the Arabic title was "Rambo The Destroyer". Since Rambo movies were very popular, the distributor thought associating Sylvester Stallone to Rambo in the title would sell more tickets.
Lenina Huxley's name is a combination of Lenina Crowne and Aldous Huxley. Crowne is a character in Aldous Huxley's "Brave New World" (1932), a novel about a future society where everything is predetermined for you so as not to offend others (among other reasons) and where showing even moderate emotion is considered to be unusual and possibly even illegal. Crowne's first name Lenina itself was chosen by Aldous Huxley after the pseudonym of the first dictator of the Soviet Union, V.I. Lenin (Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov).
Peter M. Lenkov wrote the movie when he was a production assistant. His inspiration came as he would drive his salvaged car with a broken boom box chained to the backseat repetitively playing "Demolition Man" by The Police. The lyrics, "Don't mess around with the Demolition Man" would stand out. Also combined with his love for cop television shows, and his obsession in wondering if Walt Disney was frozen, would be his launching pad.
Taco Bell was not intended to be featured as product placement. Not only did screenwriter Daniel Waters conceive the idea of the Restaurant Wars, he chose Taco Bell as the lone survivor of chain restaurants because he perceived them as the nadir of the fast food industry due to their tacky advertising and low-quality food. Waters' prophecy of lavish sit-down Taco Bells came true when the chain began test-marketing similar upscale, "fast casual" locations in 2014, further expanding the initiative in 2016 and 2017, as a means of catering to millennials.
The sex simulator was designed to look elegant, like something you stored in a jewelry box.
General Motors provided the production team with eighteen concept vehicles, including the Ultralite concept vehicle. More than twenty fiberglass replicas of the Ultralite were produced to portray civilian and S.A.P.D. patrol vehicles in the movie. After filming had completed, the remaining Ultralites were returned to Michigan as part of GM's concept vehicle fleet.
The police department's central computer was given the name L7. "L7" is another way of saying the slang word "square". This is, presumably, an inside joke on the society that the movie takes place.
Behavior control of criminals was also in A Clockwork Orange (1971), a favorite movie of director Marco Brambilla.
The movie was influenced by the novel "Brave New World" by Aldous Huxley.
In a retrospective on his filmography, Denis Leary called this movie a "giant piece of sh()it".
The UK theatrical. Video and Television versions of this film have most references to Taco Bell removed and replaced with Pizza Hut. This includes the dinner scene - with new scenes that were specially shot for countries where Taco Bell has no significant presence but Pizza Hut is well known. This version of the film is also the one most foreign audiences in Europe and in many other non-North American countries have seen.
Body count: seventy-two.
