Delightful, is there generally a big difference in weather between S Scotland and the northern parts? Is it really like having 4 seasons in one day up there?

It depends where you are I suppose. Rural Scotland and the Highlands are generally colder in Winter but I'm in the Pennines here, generally very high and exposed all year round. I live on a raised terrace along the side of the valley, so there's a difference of between a week and a fortnight in the same things flowering along the floor of the valley and in my tiny garden. And yes, you do often get the four seasons in one day effect .

As Seamus said.....we often get 4 seasons in one day!

I live in the south west where it’s generally a degree or two warmer than the north. The north is less densely populated and quite exposed so temperatures are slightly cooler. I live not too far from the sea so my temperature is usually 2° warmer from where my mum lives (and where I used to live) about a 45 min drive away.

I've uploaded a pic into my profile pics that shows what I can see out of my front door today. You'll see what I mean about the height above the valley .

@ Delightful & Seamus,
Thank you!!

Is it also true that if it rains in Scotland it rarely last an entire day? I read that in my book on Scotland but of course don't know if this is accurate.

Just mentally preparing and gathering info
It may not happen this year yet due to the current situation. I have decided to go by train to London, get on the nighttrain to Scotland. Not risking vertigo in a boat or flight! I'll likely do most by public transport but I might rent a car after all for a few days. For instance, I'd really like to go to Fort Williams area, but from Inverness this is quite the journey by bus. No train. By car it's not that far or long a drive. And renting a car for a few days, or maybe even a day, should be possible financially. I hope.
