CNN Hits Ratings Low With First Of Five Presidential Town Halls This Week
-- 10 April, Forbes

CNN's hour-long presidential town hall with 2020 Democratic candidate Kirsten Gillibrand Tuesday night slumped in the cable news overnight ratings, drawing just 491,000 total viewers between 10 p.m. ET and 11:15 p.m., a distant third behind Laura Ingraham on Fox News Channel (2.381 million viewers) and Lawrence O'Donnell on MSNBC (1.857 million).

3rd June, Mid Day, India

The president complained on arriving in Britain that he had watched CNN "for a short while" as a primary source of US news but turned it off.

Donald Trump, in Britain
"All negative & so much Fake News, very bad for U.S. Big ratings drop. Why doesn't owner @ATT do something?"

When the World watches @CNN, it gets a false picture of USA. Sad!

Question is: So what is the 'do something' that the new owner is supposed to do?

Not enough people read "1984" and fewer understand it. In fact, some people saw it as a warning, while "others" (lol) saw it as an instruction manual!

In 2016 when AT&T placed it's bets on CNN ..
and although the thinking may have changed:: it's too late to make a U-turn
and cannot allow getting tripped by one Twitter account.

so they hang in till 2020; then exercise their options including writing it off
(depending on the winner's margins)

I think they should reconsider DoJ's recommendations, sell it off before it's too late. May even do CNN some good to stand on it's own.

AT&T still carries a nickname- American Thugs & Thieves.

I've worked with them and their phone service. If I had an alternative, I'd take it. I used to get screwed over by their long distance service, then I canceled it. They claimed I needed long distance, I told them I never used it. I survived just fine without it, and used my cell for long distance.

Anything they get their hands on, they corrupt. CNN is already. MSNBC is about as bad. Several other news services have already warned it's employees not to be interviewed by those two networks. It's a mess, and only getting worse.

Until these 'News Sources' start losing advertising dollars, nothing will change. Maybe CNN is, because they're laying off people. What I'd like to see, is them shitcanning people like Anderson Cooper, or Don Lemon. Won't happen. What few do watch CNN, watch those jerks.

People are wising up. But it's a very slow process.

I agree, but now seems reaching towards a point of no return:

27 June, Prime time

Fox News: 2,626
MSNBC: 2,050
CNN: 1,121 (CNN 830 + HLN 291 = 1,121

Personally I would like to see CNN in a new avatar, New CNN: NCNN
and reset with a fresh beginning on lines of Reuters.

Reason: All the great technical talent going to dust because of one man's ego against another.

what do you all, think. should Jeff wait till CNN slides to below 500 which,
going by the rate of descent, would be around Oct. Or should he hang in till the elections?

In other words, would it not be fair for Dem candidates if CNN had a makeover with a new CEO?
--xx--

To give a legit reason for tracking CNN is because India's prime news channel NDTV is following CNN lead. CNN goes, NDTV takes a big blow.

Frankly, it's high time NDTV got news out on Indian ground realities instead of 'follow the piper'.

Hello Tom,
As usual you are direct and in this case I can see the implicit along with the explicit. Yet, since my father told me the same thing decades ago, in simpler words to ‘mind my own business’; I take your point quite seriously.

I will confine to the explicit message here.

Why is CNN my business is like asking why is Microsoft, Google, Facebook and many others my business. CNN has a larger overseas viewership than in America. CNNI has studios outside the US, in London, Mumbai, Hong Kong and Abu Dhabi. It draws it's feed of the main CNN. Wikipedia lists about 50 independent overseas channels affiliated to CNN. In terms of revenues, it is like Boeing; more Boeing jets fly 'as commercial airlines' overseas each day than within America.

In other words the USA is the largest economy mainly because it is also the largest exporter in the world. This is what that took the heat off US companies after 2008 recession.

And since you asked whether CNN pays your electric bill; if you take the big picture with electrical utilities feeding CNN and so bringing down domestic costs and if one weaves this local economy with the profit that is brought in from the overseas sales, the answer is 'yes'.

In other words if CNN confined its broadcast within US borders, your electrical billing rate would be up by a few cents per KWH.

--xx--

A note on the Global Economy: Similarly it is my business when US sanctions Iran. We have now ended up paying more for oil. In this Global Economy, the apples sold in US could be from HP (mountain state in India). In turn we bite into the waxed ones from US. The prawns served in your restaurants, the cotton clothes you wear; all sourced from India, China, Bangladesh and so on. US no longer grows cotton!

This Sir, is the layered Global Economy; with US products at the top of the heap.
all this not that we don't know, it's just that we have lost our sensitivity to it.

It is in this context I suggested that AT&T / CNN take a tough stand with Jeff Zucker or risk the consequences.

My 2 cents worth.

That's laughable. CNN hardly is a blip on the screen to our electrical usage. There's three major electrical grids in this country. East Coast, West Coast, and Texas.

This country used to have some power problems. Power usage used to create issues. High population areas would draw off power from the low, creating brownouts. One company, AEP took steps before it became a huge issue, by hiring bright young minds, putting them in charge of managing their systems. Now, when this occurs, it hits the AEP firewall. They can feed power back into the systems in need, without cutting off their own customers. It's not Texas, but it can be compared to it.

US no longer grows cotton!

********. Cotton farming in this country is a staple for many US farmers. Current acreage in cotton-11 million acres. Hardly just a patch in the back yard. We happen to be third in the world, in cotton production.

CNN had better depend on what it shows the world. Because in the States, it sucks.

'On CNN paying your electric bills' the point was a bit on the metaphorical side, in the sense CNN being a major consumer of electricity it brings down / spreads costs; assuming utilities charge a higher rate on commercial entities and a lower rate on homes. Further, ICNN generates the surplus that's pumped back into loss making CNNs kitty.

The input on AEP firewall - impressive. thanks.

On cotton, fine; you know better.

I agree with you but partially on 'trusting the word of Trump'. Trump like other politicians exaggerates and this sometimes crosses over to become a lie. Surprisingly, as President, he is in a position of power to turn his lies to become the ‘new truth’.

But politicians come and go. It’s finally the media that remains with us; and must remain true to its readers. This is a part of this conversation.

The question now is, why was Jeff promoted to Chairman on Match 2019 while CNN ratings plummeted from its high 2017 levels to the low as in Scoreboard in this thread.

Jeff’s explanation on Mueller Report has been that ‘we are journalists and not investigators’. Seems pathetic defense because it further raises the question what other stories by CNN are tilted.

CNN’s Case Study poses a question not only to its affiliates like the ICNN, NYT; but to all media journalism worldwide: Are you a news reporter or are you a salacious rag?

As far as Fox News goes, Rupert Murdoch owns it and the tilt towards Trump is obvious. Fox is a mix of entertainment & journalism; and when this happens lot of boring analysis along with it's 'real value' is jettisoned. I don't think Murdoch has any fans in the UK or overseas.

... Trump secured a deal with the Mexican government, and suspended the tariffs.

Hello Red,

From this, and your point in the Iran thread, Trump seems to be a guy with roses on one hand and a base ball bat on the other... but hey, Trump is not in the topic here; it was the scoreboard; how did we get distracted?

Not that I actually give a damn...

My comment was to the importance one places on inconsequential things while ignoring what should be important like family and life.

I don't watch TV...at all. None, can't stand it.

What I do watch is how people interact with each other when I go out in public.
Its freakin appalling.

CNN, Facebook, the other networks, walmart, gas stations, government, Trump and everything else so important is not really important.
What is important is who you love and how you treat them in the right now.
What is important is whether or not you are paying attention to the things you need to pay attention to, with the dedication and commitment those things and people deserve.

Imagine if they had got away with it !!!!
Where Russian & Chinese disinformation failed ...,
imagine Time Warner taking off.

BBC: I believe even the German's relied on BBC during the war. Although, publicly funded, government ignored their distress and they nearly ran themselves to ground. Then turned liberal. I personally believe it has more to do with revenue than management tilt

CNN's problem was (again my opinion) gaining 'world wide leadership'. They succeeded and enjoyed enormous surging / pulsating power.
Decided to play God

Now Reuters is left.

CNN London

CNN is preparing to make substantial cuts to its London-based television news operation in a move that is likely to result in at least a dozen employees losing their jobs.

The announcement was made by Jeff Zucker, the CNN boss, at a “town hall” meeting on Tuesday in the company’s office in central London.

Staff, including some managers whose shows were affected, were given no advance warning of the announcement, according to some of those present. Zucker told them that the international channel was losing $10m (£8m) a year, according to those present.

The cuts come shortly after the longstanding CNN International boss Tony Maddox unexpectedly announced he was leaving the station earlier this month.

what is 10 million loss in a basket of 1.2 billion? I believe Tony Maddox (formerly of BBC) left because he had had enough.
