For me, it depends upon the Context of a situation

generally, if someone's INTENT is to compliment me, I can take it as such and keep moving

If not giving the 'proper' level of gratitude causes an immediate insult, than I take the insult as intended too

Phew!!!

I'm getting better at taking compliments gracefully, but sometimes I still fall for the old routine of discarding it.
It also depends on who, where when. When I got loads of compliments for my being Master, no hang on, Mistress of Ceremonies, I was totally overwhelmed. Didn't see what was so special (still don't tbh).
It can be totally awkward too, and make me very shy... Had that shortly after my breakup when I went to a pub... Ppl were kinda shocked that I looked so happy and beaming, they'd only ever seen me miserable when with my ex. I'd lost a lot of weight as well, dressed sexy. THey'd never seen me like that. Then this dude commented on it, gawking at me, and thoroughly enjoyed me blushing profusely. A-hole didn't let up either, everyone enjoyed it to the max, while I got increasingly uncomfortable. Felt totally out of my depth. However much of a compliment it was, as it was genuine, I was happy when attention shifted to something else.

I think I get shy and uncomfortable when it's unexpected. When I feel I deserve it, it's much easier to accept it gracefully.
