I was at the store and next in line waiting patiently while the woman in front of me had her order wrung up. She had basic household items, bleach, a toilet brush, etc. After the cashier told her the total, she counted out her money and asked the girl to remove a few things, obviously embarrassed. She was $1.26 short. I spoke up and told her I would cover it, giving the cashier a buck and a quarter. You would have thought I was an alien the way they both looked at me. She tried to insist that I not pay and I told her not to worry about it, it's only a dollar. She thanked me about 5 times and waited outside of the store to thank me yet again. The cashier remarked that I must be an angel and she had never had that occur before.
I walked out of the store feeling both thankful for all that I have, which isn't a whole lot being a single mom, but also saddenned that what I viewed as a tiny act of good will could seem so outlandish to others. What has this world come to??? My wish today is that every person count their blessings and be thankful for what they have, and if at all possible...do something kind for a stranger. What may be tiny to you could be huge for someone in need. Happy Thanksgiving everyone!! |

Its a sad fact of this century, that everyone is out for themselves (or appear to be) Society is breaking down, and an act of goodwill is seen with such suspicion...they think to themselves "what do you want in return..." I see it too, you are not alone

I'm sorry to have to say this but what you speak of here is only the case in the United States of America. If you go to Europe and in particular England, you'll see that folk are still decent to each other on a regular basis.
Unfortunately it has become cut throat here in the USA, all anyone cares about anymore is the next dollar and how quickly they can get their hands on it and who do they have to step on in order to get it. I admire your charity and truly wish their were more people like you around, well done very nice gesture. |

I can honestly say that I witness random acts of kindness every day. I think the trick is ~ like you ~ we have to be sensative to those opportunities and be willing to initiate them too! It begins with each of us, no matter what country you live in....

ehm...actually BeauBritish...I speak as an English Woman, born, bred and living...I have to disagree with you...Society is Crap here in the good old Island, it's so easy to lay blame at Americas doorstep, but sometimes its just not the right thing to do...hence why Im emigrating

Well, Americans are the Most giving in World History, but her kindness is the kind of everyday , acts that used to be called chivalry, when done by men. Thanks be to women like her, and men that has compassion for someone that seems to be having a little tougher time than her at the moment. There is a commercial running on Tv, right now, that does pick up on that Idea, of observing an act of kindness, and reciprocating .
Cheers to the British if there is kindness there, but we all need to be mindful of each others Plight. |

That was awesome that you did that. I am the same way, and its a shame that everyone isn't that kind.
I had a situation last year, where a homeless man was begging with a sign that said "Will work for money or food". I was at a local (pretty famous) restaurant, and spent $17 on a sandwich, fries, onion rings, hot coffee, another drink for later and pie. I took it out to the man and he turned up his nose and said "What the h*ll is this?~! I said "your sign says you need food and I was trying to help you..." He said "well, I want the cash, get it?!?"... SO I took my $17 worth of food and had it for dinner that night, still stunned that someone could be so ungrateful. As a mom, I know how I hope my children will grow up - as kind, well adjusted people who genuinely care about all people. Hope you have a great turkey day! |

I've just been in her shoes, needing basic necessities and unable to afford them, choosing between diapers and dish soap to wash the dishes. Though I still struggle financially, that dollar mattered more for her than for me. But I appreciate the kind thoughts all. |

That was a nice story, what I learned from it was to stand in front of misswright at the grocery store . I think it depends on where you're from though, I live in a big city so people are jerks all the time but I'm from a small town so I think I notice it more. What irritates me is guys on the train who won't give up their seat to a little old lady. |

Sorry if I offened anyone, but having lived in New jersey for the past 8 years I have witnessed a lot of rudeness and ignorance. When I lived in England and while travelling across Europe I never experienced such behaviour.
My intention was not to put down America, quite the opposite, I love this country and the people who live here but I was just expressing my opinion based on my experiences since living here. |

There does seem to be a trend of nastiness. With the doom and gloom we see everyday on the news, and the total arrogant and selfish behavior exhibited out of Hollywood, there is no wonder there is a harsh edge these days.
Guys on this site are ridiculed for having emotions, and nice guys are trashed as phony. Well, I am a nice person and nothing or nobody will ever change that. Just keep being who you are Misswright. It's too bad we don't hear more stories like yours, and only hear from the crude blowhards these days. |
