Got Linux Mint on my laptop, fresh install, only use the danged thing when I'm painting. Anyways, it goes to sleep (energy safe modus) and I need to reenter password. I do so, nothing. Another 4 times, nothing? Same password I used an hour earlier when I started it up :/
Capslock wasn't on. So I reboot. Hoping it would sort itself out. But I didn't even get the inlog screen anymore? Only a dark screen with my username on it. That's all. Tried rebooting again, same thing.
Went into Grub, changed password, rebooted, same thing still.


Can anyone help me? What is wrong and better yet, how the he(ck can I change it, so I can use my laptop again? I'm a real Linux noob, my ex installed it for me, said you never had problems with Linux. Right. ALl I have had so far is shite

Your ex was close, usually a lot less problems on a Linux system than a Windows system, but they can have problems.

Does it work if you try to login from the command line by hitting Ctrl+Alt+F1 ?
Switch back to GUI mode by Ctrl+Alt+F7

Well, somehow my username on the screen was clickable and I then got the login popup back. Numlock was switched on, switched it off and I was back in! Phew!!

Lock buttons being activated are a common cause apparently.

I am glad you got help to get it fixed. Loved Ubuntu then Mint. Prefer Lubuntu with Gnome. Was happy when Lubuntu became part of Ubuntu. I hope you stay with Linux; Its awesome to me.

I got Linux Mint on my laptop, but I'm running Windows on my PC. Had a prob with that too, had to validate and it didn't work. But that's sussed as well. Otherwise I would've gone to Linux on PC.
Must admit I like Linux. I ran it in July when my PC needed to be repaired (fried my motherboard when it was so unbelievably hot in July). It is smooth and shuts down soooo much faster then Windows! Loved the built in download proggie as well.
It's just that with Windows I have some knowledge when things go wrong. Linux is totally alien to me, although I needed to sod around with command lines over the summer and I pulled it off. Did Dbase / Dos in the past, and still remember some of the stuff, the basic logic behind it.

But very happy everything is running okay again!
And thank you, even though it was soon fixed, still nice to know ppl reply and are willing to help out!

There is a way to reset the password, but it involves booting a Live CD or thumbdrive-- such as the one used for installing. It's a relatively simple process.

So far it's still working ... although sometimes it gets stuck in a loop during start up. But it still works, it's not my main computer ..
But I don't think I'd want it on my main pc.. I understand somehow it's more stable than Windows, but what I've experiences so far, it goes noodle doodle far easier than my Windows. And thing is, I don't know enough of it to fix it, Windows I'm used to. So for my computer, I'm sticking with Windows

I guess if you familiarize yourself with the Dos stuff a bit, Linux is great, now I just panic if something goes wrong. I do remember a bit from Dos basics, but still ...

Linux the "original" ROM that looks like a RAM hard drive. Right?
