I don't understand their thought process. I'm a calloused old goat, but I would not reveal such personal info to a stranger so soon after contact online, on a dating site no less. Scammers suck.
That last statement reads kinda funny. I'm not saying that you provide the info. It's stupid for a scammer to provide TMI. |

Definately a red flag if someone starts off right away with that kind of sob story. Thats when I use the delete button.....no time for that b.s.! |

When I was new here, there was a guy who said he restored classic cars. Being a huge fan of vintage automotive restorations, I naturally sent an email inquiring about the vehicles he posted on his profile. Nothing romantic or even personal, since I wasn't looking, and even if I were, he was not my type. It was just an honest to goodness inquiry from one colleague to another, so to speak. The guy immediately assumed I was a scammer because I'm a woman and a lot younger than he is.

Well, death is the ultimate heartbreaking thing in life. So I understand more, why they'd pick death in particular to reel someone in. As long as they can cry about it on an internet site, they'll get plenty of sympathy. This is why I'm careful about who to believe. Anyway, low and behold, when the person they're talking about DOES die, because hopefully they'll then wish they never lied about the person. This is why I never mention in a forum, family, or friends, or even myself, going through anything bad, because surely it would just make people think "Really? Hmmmmm. How can we be sure?". So I keep sad incidents private.

Money and manipulation. Scammers are leeches, but they have to get your cooperation before they can fasten on and start drawing financial blood. If they can activate your emotions, they have a greater chance of lowering your guard. A healthy dose of cynicism goes a long way. . .

Scammers are at best time wasters and at worst criminal fraudsters, we all need to be careful whom we communicate with. A request for a skype vidoe call early on is a good idea, to see if they match their profile photo if they have one. They usually move to requesting money in some form very quickly, so at least you will not waste too much time before finding out if they are scammers, and you never send money to anyone you have only met online no matter what they tell you. If you do suspect a scammer always report them to the site so they can check them out, no harm done if they turn out to be genuine and you could save someone a lot of heartache as well as money.

There are so many scammers because there is a measure of anonymity online. Anyone can pretend to be anybody they want. Some are poor slobs ( like me ) that artificially enhance themselves to get attention but others are professionals that do it for a living. If I'm sitting in some third world country and I can pity/love talk you out of a few hundred bucks I just scored more money than I would see in a month or more otherwise. And what do I care? I'm not going to be in any legal trouble. DO NOT SEND MONEY TO SOMEONE YOU NEVER MET! If I really believed I loved a woman and the only thing keeping us apart was a plane ticket I would sell everything I owned to get to her. There is a big difference between "pick me up at the airport" and "send me money to buy a ticket. No, not the ticket, the money!"
Can't fish in a dry pond. + = |

Just a stab in the dark but maybe here is where their target market is to be found?
It's kind of like, why are there so many commercials on tv. Or why does commercial media tell blatant lies. The very question says the method is working. It's no longer working when you switch off the tv and look up your own journalist references regarding current affairs. And scammers no longer work against you when you ignore them before it has time to even bother you. |

Oh.........I reveal kind of personal information too, but only if it related to a topic that's already brought up. Recently I told someone about the loss of a husband when he asked what I was looking for as far as long-term relationships go in my life, and that incident has to do with my standpoint. >.> I hope he doesn't think I'm bs-ing him.
I'm not a scammer, just very open! >.< |

The reason there are so many scammers is because there are so many dumb arses that send them money, gifts, and information they can use.
You would be amazed how many people will send kid toys, bikes, tools, clothing, electronics, and plane tickets to absolute strangers. And don't get that the people that do it just have it taken away from who ever is begging for it by some thug who resells it often for pennies on the dollar. Often it is the information weather it is when your house is empty to rob, or bits and pieces of information they can use to put you on junk mail lists, or hack your identity, or create a better phony persona just to have human contact. Sometimes it is just improving their English skills so they can work in call centers. OR and this should be kind of scarey pass as foreign citizen's in secured areas. |

Because there are scammers everywhere. As the genius P.T.Barnum once said. "Theres a sucker born everyday."

I always get the US military profiles. Saying "I WILL like to know you..." or the marriage proposals on first contact or in a friend request! But these things happen on every site like this. I get it more on facebook these days. Just don't send money and go with your gut feelings.

You might think I'm being dramatic, but always put your safety first. We all get carried away, and we sometimes forget anyone can have a plan in mind. Just saying. And keep as many safety things near you as you can.
