TO
BE AN AMERICAN: "It is not my right to be common -- if I can. I seek opportunity -- not security. I want to take the calculated risk; to dream and build, to fail and succedd. I refuse to barted incentive for a dole. I prefer the challenges of life to the guaranteed existence; the thrill of fulfillment to the stale calm of Utopia. I will not trade freedom for benefice nor my dignity for a handout. I will never cower before any master nor bend to any threat. It is my heritage to stand erect, proud and unafriad; to think and act for myself, enjoy the benefit of my creations and to face the world boldly and say, this I have done. All this is what it means to be an American. I do not choose to be common" --- said by Dean Alfange, Cornell University. Now, here comes a question: "What does it means to be a Nationality of yours? ? ? Proof and be proud of your Country!!! |

it means I was born in AMerica,, being 'american'
there are thousands of types of 'americans' none more or less American than the next,, however,,, being a decent human means caring about others and reaching out to others and doing our best to do no harm to others being an ADULT means to be responsible and accountable to ourselves and our loved ones,,, I must choose to try to be the latter two, I was born the former without any personal effort or personal choice on my part |

I'm Scottish and a proud Scotsman! My mates and people I know are proud also, but are different in their own ways. The same as Americans? All different types of personalities and beliefs, but united in their pride for their nation! That speech from that guy was his interpretation of what it means to be American, but any other Americans view would be different, but still their proud statement.

I have a conflicting heritage
Im Britsh and Scottish The Engish part likes to drink but the Scottish never wants to pay for it. |
|
|
|
I had thought of a long winded comment about what being American means to me but I can sum it up without a wall of text.
To me being American is being free to choose my own path in life to walk and to believe what I want to believe without persecution. |

To be an American is to be a patriot. This is the only country on the planet, where the citizenry not only has a right to question their government, but has a duty to do so. Unlike every other country on the planet, we don't pledge allegiance to a King or a Queen, or a Royal Family, but to an ideal, the Constitution Of the United States. To be an American, is to swear an oath to defend the Constitution against ALL enemies, foreign AND domestic. That means if even you find a own father to be a traitor, you turn him over. It's a tough standard, and not everyone can live up to it. But then, not everyone can be an American. |

American has no monopoly on any of these traits there was only one Rembrandt, as there is only one of any of us so to say a painter is a Rembrandt, is saying they paint like Rembrandt, ,, ONE person,, Americans , are millions,, so there is no unique or special way to be 'american',, except to be born in america |

(Don't forget) To be American is: To sew a Canadian Flag on your Packpacks while traveling abroad! Just having fun allie. My two Cousins both flew British Jaguars for the RAF in the gulf war. I remember them and the French did the low fly Sorties. Thanks for your service. The |

For me, being an American means so much more than birthright, that was just luck of the draw ...Being an American is about my beliefs in myself and in my country...It's about loyalty and pride, responsibility and trust...
As an American, I believe life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness is my unalienable right...Under the governing laws of my country, I believe every citizen is equal...I believe in being loyal to my country, no exceptions...I believe anyone, regardless of nationality, religion, or ethnicity should be able to (and can) become an American citizen...I believe in freedom of speech...I believe, because I am an American, I will never be defined by race, ethnicity, religion, or my ancestry...I believe America's culture is unique because it is universal...I am proud to be an American...I love my country.... |

I had thought of a long winded comment about what being American means to me but I can sum it up without a wall of text. To me being American is being free to choose my own path in life to walk and to believe what I want to believe without persecution. if it had to be defined , this seems most accurate and inclusive,,,,, (but even this definition isn't an exclusive definition for those in America, Id say tis definition really pertains to what it means to be 'free',, an attribute of many nations,,,) |

All different types of personalities and beliefs, but united in their pride for their nation! That speech from that guy was his interpretation of what it means to be American, but any other Americans view would be different, but still their proud statement. the speech was rooted in the American doctrine of manifest destiny. I am one of those who believes that it takes time to become an American, and it mean someething. My family has been here since before the Civil War (on both sides I think). A person newly here, or a first generation American can be a citizen but truly an American when they know where & how our country's principles were founded and the history...both the good and the bad and the ugly.... at the same time what it means to be American evolves constantly because we truly are a melting pot...and what gets thrown into the pot changes as time goes on....so respecting and being proud of that diversity is uniquely American. the values of "American" apply to any person who wants liberty and justice for all. We always need citizens old & new, to keep those values foremost. "Let Freedom Ring," "Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death, " "No taxation without Representation." "Ask not what your country can do for you, rather ask what you can do for your country,"Yes, we must, indeed, all hang together, or most assuredly we shall all hang separately." To be an American you need know who said these words and why....IDK care how long ya been here..lo |
