Ha ha, I could've had 3 beers in that time Journeyman, but im working on a roof just now. So i'll just have to wait 4 hours ( 5pm UK time ) til I can hit the pub my friend! I'm not really into beer and having to drink 2, 3 beers whilst reading a tome is pushing it. So I skipped it altogether, take your word for it that it's good, lol Have fun and don't fall off the roof, Larsson, if it's as windy over there as it is here ... |

I think having a balance is optimal for me. I've been doing manual labor since I was a teenager. But in the end I know we all grow old and even with exercise the body will still lose muscle mass as it ages. I also think mental stress is far more tiring than physical stress. Spirituality is as just important as the other two as well.
But in the end what I truly believe and strive for is to be a person with a big heart cause thats where true strength is found. |

Ha ha, I won't Crystal. It is windy here but i've got the scaffolding up. So I wont fall far if I do. Been in this game far too long to do so tho. Gonna have a few beers this weekend, as its my 42nd birthday next week!

So many great replies & I had 2 beers reading pony's! Get a gun in those woods dude.. Physical strength is good as long as you have the mental strength to control it. You shotgunned those beers didn't ya?! Seriously. It took me like less than a minute and a half to read Pony's post and I'm not even a speed reader. You either read slow or drink really fast man! At least you read it though, or cheers! depending on your answer. Agree with the gun suggestion too, Pony! Coming from the sticks, I know you don't mess with them bears, and God forbid you come across one with her cubs! I don't know if I coulda slept a wink that night. Apparently the squirrels have yet to collect your nuts dude! Totally dig that last caveat too Journeyman. You have to have mental fortitude to reign in your physical strength at times, and to muster more than you thought you had at other times, just to survive this chaotic life. |

Spirituality is as just important as the other two as well. But in the end what I truly believe and strive for is to be a person with a big heart cause thats where true strength is found. Indeed we lose muscle mass with age, but I've noticed men in general remain strong quite long. I.e. my son's 22, one would think in the prime of his life. But physically he can't beat a man of let's say 55-64. No chance in he|| Got a neighbour, 64, the stuff he can hump without problems whatsoever, unbelievable. When I was younger I thought men that age wouldn't be that strong anymore. It really does take quite some time for men to lose their strength. Think on average this happens after the age of 66/68? As for young fellows, I don't think they get anywhere near their prime strength-wise till they're around 30. Again, average, there's always exceptions to the rule. What I find more important ... If I really had to choose I'd go for the mental strength. In many cases this can be far more effective than physical strength. But I prefer a healthy balance between the two. And of course inner strength, which is possibly the most important one of the three. No my birthsigns pyrex Crystal, cos im a test-tube baby! Ha ha. Aye, im a libra, so is my son. My mums got me a litre bottle of Drambuie. So im gonna get rat-a$$ed on that tomorrow. Well lunch over, back to work! bigsmile
I was gonna say "how about a Scottish drink" but it is a Scottish drink, lol. Learning all the time Two Libras under the same roof, decision making must be tough at times, But maybe it works slightly different for a pyrex Libra :) Me and my daughter are both Taurus, wasn't always handy, |

Right above the main entrance of the boxing club I was a member of said this: "Its better to build a boy than mend a man"! Ps The Scottish don't like to drink, do they? I like Danny Boy the stand up comedian, he's the best! |

Spent a fair amount of time in the woods as a teenager. Plus I know from my brothers' hunting habits that if you stumble on a mother and cubs, don't matter how much noise you made getting to her, you better make tracks outta there and fast!! Brother owned a tree company and we always had to cut cords of wood for the stove growing up, so I totally get the need to stay mentally focused when it comes to chain saws and chopping with the ax. Saw my Dad catch a knot after he'd been at it all day, was tired, and the saw popped up and chewed through his nose. Safety glasses kicked it back before it went into his head, thank God, but what a gory mess!! So stay safe out there! |

Well you know from going to the Boxing Pony, that you learn discipline and how to focus without losing your cool, as an angry man isn't thinking rationally! Taught me a lot about myself. Not too keen on that Danny Boy, but check out Billy Connolly, Kevin Bridges and Frankie Boyle? Thats 3 of Scotlands best! The Scots drink just as much as any1 else.

{{{HI Soufie }}} I hope you guys are still enjoying some nice weather down there the north is strange and cruel by the way that history I just told was 14 days ago. We were all sent home on that job for 5 days as the fire index was extreme for to many days in a row and the morning we got rain it was also snowing just at mile 300 on the Alaska HWY Wow a 5-day hiatus for fire danger, I hear dat. I did not realize that that danger was as great in BC, same as here. With snow, no less :-) |

Physical strength doesn't mean a thing without mental strength, that's just a glass tiger to me,and their will can be broken, "believe it and you can accomplish it". Not long ago I was traveling to camp along the Alaska HWY in northern British Columbia and broke down so I decided to hitch hike in to Camp for work in the morning,I got to the 95 mile junction and it was 11:30pm,I was tied and it was getting cold so I figured I go light a fire. I dragged a big duffel bag with my work gear up a steep bank another bag with my spare saw and a large backpack, due to the weight and grade of the bank, it took three trips, taking the heaviest last. when I got to the bushline on the last trip I could smell a strong smell, obviously a bear that I spoked upwind that may had been circling around as all bears are curious. The first trip I went in and made a lot of noise and scouted out a good spot with deadfall (firewood). It was mandatory to have bear awareness training on the particular job I was going to. I stopped for a second at the bushline and then thought I'm tired and cold and the bear is just going to have to go elsewhere,it was "fight or flight" and considering my circumstance I wasn't in the mood to move so I entered in the dark making as much noise as I could talking in a deep firm voice telling it to move on.I went to the area I scouted earlier and lit a fire, stomping some bigger pieces of wood Making all kinds of noise. I wasn't that worried about the bear once I decided to go In as they attack for 2 reasons and that's territorial or preditorial, and in this case it would have most likely happened as territorial attacks would usually start with jar chomping, grunting and bluff charging with heavy front feet stomping, that's not so fun, we chased one up the hill once trying to recover my co workers back pack that a bear dragged off, but he kept bluff charging back then pounding its feet on the grounds we found the pack under a big spruce tree and we backed off then moments later we seen the young bear stand up from under the low sprue bows, mad, as he realized we took it back, the bear disappears again and stands up with D.... coffee mug in his paws, head back watching us and licking it.we put forth the effort to get his bag back because the dummy brought his wallet to the bush?? there's only one kind of money in the bush and that's "bushmoney" or Aka toilet paper,he yells out "he's got my coffee cup" so I said "well go get it then" lol,we called in the helicopter and flew back. One story leads into another,so back at the fire I'm all warm thinking I'll get some sleep then get on the road about 5:30 am when trucks will be starting to move,I had a toque on when I got there so I was looking for it on the ground under a dimming firelight I moved my back pack that I had been laying back on, from against the tree and saw something black up against the tree and went to pick it up and I realized what it was immediately, I flicked my lighter only to confirm it was bear droppings and the only time you will see big piles up against a tree in one area is when you come across a bear den....huh,maybe I won't go to sleep,it didn't look like black bear chit that would be full of berries. I wanted to go but where an I going to go? across the street? I'm burning a fire in its den,I was pretty nervous at that point thinking ,won't be sleeping tonight. I pulled out my spare chainsaw that didn't have a muffler on it, hoping it had a little gas in it,I fired it up for a few seconds a couple of times then stoked the fire and slept like a baby. I woke up, warmed up, put the fire out,got a ride right away and went to work. A few days ago a was doing some Danger tree assessing so I wouldn't have my saws and would be by myself,I was offered bear spry but I said me and the bears are good and if its my time its my time! I'm good with that, besides I'm more afraid of the squirrels...because they're after me nuts. I live in Canada "we make toques, not nukes"!yeah That's right I don't have a gun. Pony! Arm wrestle that puckin bear will ya... you wuss! hahaha Mental strengh = willpower... nothing trumps it IMO Until some gnarling Grizzly kicks yer azz all over a mountain side I guess? Ok speed trumps all... yes speed |
