If you look at what's trending on Yahoo, you might think today is not just Fried Chicken Day but also White People's Day. But before you pack up a picnic or go looking for the parade, that was actually two days ago, according to comedian Chris Rock.

In his typical in-your-face-manner, Rock sent out a provocative missive on Twitter for Independence Day that's stirring up a bit of chatter still on Friday.

"Happy white peoples independence day the slaves weren't free but I'm sure they enjoyed fireworks," he tweeted.

Frankly, it's fairly tame on the Rock scale of controversy, but it has still managed to elicit heated response.

One from Jeff Schrieber read: "@chrisrockSlavery existed for 2000yrs before America. We eradicated it in 100yrs. We now have a black POTUS." He followed it with a hashtag of a dismissive direction involving the F bomb.

Some found humor in Rock's tweet, including actor Don Cheadle, who received a Twit storm of replies.
Actor Zach Braff tweeted something less direct, but along the same lines as Chris Rock and was retweeted 745 times. He did catch a little flak as well.

i never had a problem with CR... he has always seemed like a wannabe racist, like he just says things that he really doesn't believe just to make money... watch him in "dogma" and you will see what i'm talking about

The last time that I checked, Chris Rock is a member of the human race. So, are you saying that Chris Rock doesn't care for other humans?

Racism is a result of you Homo sapiens dividing yourselves into artificial categories called races.

Whenever I don my human guise, I present myself to Planet Earth as a "man" only, not a "white man" because the color of one's skin is irrelevant.

If you believe that God created all men equal, then you contradict that belief by claiming that only certain people are "your" people.

Also, if you claim to be a Christian, then your "people" are either all Christians regardless of skin color or all humans, because according to the New Testament, Jesus broke down all racial barriers.

As for what Chris Rock said, his error is in his forgetting the fact that African-Americans were among the colonial soldiers who fought for the USA's independence from the UK. A number of those men were from the state of Rhode Island, and they gained their freedom by joining the colonial army.

Furthermore, the USA's fight for independence didn't begin on 4 July 1776. It actually originated on 5 March 1770, which is when the Boston Massacre took place. The first colonist to die was Crispus Attucks, an African-American.

So, I consider the celebration of July 4th to be a celebration of the sacrifice of all colonists who fought for the USA's independence, including those colonists who were African-American.

I love Dogma..it's definitely up there with my all time favs.

No, I don't think CR is racist...he knows where his money comes from .

He's a comedian plain and simple and if you've ever watched any of his 'live' shows - thanks to my son, I've watched quite a few, he actually bashes black (African American) people more than white in his routines.

I'm with you.

Rock will dis any group he believes will make him money and keep him in the game.

Sad, any white comedian that would crack jokes with a negro theme would be bashed racist and banned from performing.

Yes, we all belong to a human race. The racial breakdowns are for identification and science references.

I am a Christian, but I also speak of subgroups with terms like 'my family', or 'my kids',, or 'my race',,,,its a way to distinguish common experience or bloodlines,,,


and because african americans died for the US independence , didnt make that victory something they could celebrate being that they still came back from 'fighting' not even free to share the same space with the 'enemy' they had fought,,,,dying to be substandard for one group instead of another is not that much of a victory,,,

Chris Rock is one of the top 20 funniest comedians of all time. He is my generations Richard Pryor. Not as good though.

Because you should what the comedian is about before going to see them, if you don't then its all on you. (Not you specifically)

theres this thing called CABLE, people dont all 'go see' comedy,, some find it switching through channels and they stay tuned to see if it will make them laugh,,,

and then there are quite a few comedy line ups with more than one comedy act, where you get them all if you want to see any of them,,,
