Like I said I think the term liberal got hijacked someplace along the way or at least it got some serious spin doctoring because the traits listed are more in line with what would today be considered conservative philosophy. I think the far left wants to call themselves liberal to disguise their true agenda that of advancing socialism. The Republican ideals do favor traditional values concerning religion and such but they also encompass what are considered liberal ideals by the definition, that is the rule of law, free exchange of ideas, a market economy, free private enterprise etc. The Democratic Ideals lean heavily towrard socialism in that they want a huge government that does all and controls. At least in England they named themselves correctly "Social Democrats".
