Topic: what liberalism means to me. | |
---|---|
Voil...you don't seem to want a discussion...you merely sparse semantics to confuse the issue. Generalalities are given in reference to groups of people..do you expect me to name each and every liberal in the U.S. that I am refering to??? Everyone knows that there are exceptions to every rule..including Liberals Just like all African Americans are not all Black...but when speaking about African Americans is "generally" known as a term for Americans with Black African heritage even though there are many White African Americans. And Knoxman (see very specific ) makes my point perfectly in saying:
"I work more hours a week than you probably do in a month. Maybe you should come up out of your mother's basement every once in a while and see how the real world works. You'd be amazed. I pay for my own insurance, and I've never asked for help or handouts in my life. Think about that next time mommy gives you your weekly allowance. " Little does he know My parents raised 9 kids...I wore hand-me-downs from my older brothers till I was in High school. And now that I am "well Off"...it MUST be because I was fed with a silver spoon and get money from a rich Mommy and Daddy....LOL. Well I guess My point is made...the liberal left (general) have used class envy as a propaganda tool for as long as I can remember and yet they(Liberal Politicians) are the ones keeping the people they say they want to help, in a virtual under-class by taxing policies and promoting social programs that keep them dependant on the government...instead of becoming self-reliant. And Yes Knoxman...you probably do work twice as many hours as I do..I put in my time..made the right investments and did it with no help from anyone and now I can enjoy the fruits of my labor and sacrifice. It wasn't easy...but I don't think there are too many countries out there where ANYONE, with enough work and discipline can have the "American Dream". Let me ask you "liberals" a question...and try to get an honest answer. Would you pay to have your neighbors lawn mowed or house painted?...No of course not !! So why pay for someone else's healthcare or Welfare check? When you learn that the more the government "gives" you the more you are enslaved and your freedoms become more and more diminished. Viol..sorry for the ramblings and generalities...and the possibility that I might have even went off topic a bit...It will probably happen again...so I guess I am not worthy of this intellectual mind scape I find here |

I have been following this thread with a good deal of interest . Although we got sidetracked for a bit discussing Senator Kerry’s fortitude or lack there of, it seems back to the original thought. We call each other “liberals” and “conservatives” but I began to doubt that all actually knew the meaning of the terms. I did a little research on the internet and I found a multitude of definitions of both terms. The following are definitions from Wikipedia.com which seem to be some of the less antagonistic. If the following definition are correct, somewhere along the line the ideals got hijacked by both parties. It seems to me that the Republican Party Ideology is more in line with the liberal tennents listed here and the Democratic Party is more in line with Socialism.
Conservatism is a term used to describe political philosophies that favor traditional values, where "tradition" refers to religious, cultural, or nationally defined beliefs and customs. The term is derived from the Latin, conservāre, to conserve; "to keep, guard, observe". Since different cultures have different established values, conservatives in different cultures have different goals. Some conservatives seek to preserve the status quo, while others seek to return to the values of an earlier time, the status quo ante. Liberalism. Broadly speaking, liberalism emphasizes individual rights and equality of opportunity. A liberal society is characterized by freedom of thought for individuals, limitations on power, the rule of law, the free exchange of ideas, a market economy, free private enterprise, and a transparent system of government in which the rights of all citizens are protected.[2] In the 21st century, this usually means liberal democracy with open and fair elections, where all citizens have equal rights by law.[3] Socialism refers to a broad array of doctrines or political movements that envisage a socio-economic system in which property and the distribution of wealth are subject to control by the community.[1] This control may be either direct—exercised through popular collectives such as workers' councils—or indirect—exercised on behalf of the people by the state. As an economic system, socialism is often characterized by state or community ownership of the means of production. The modern socialist movement had its origin largely in the working class movement of the late-19th century. In this period, the term "socialism" was first used in connection with European social critics who criticized capitalism and private property. For Karl Marx, who helped establish and define the modern socialist movement, socialism implied the abolition of money, markets, capital, and labor as a commodity. A diverse array of doctrines and movements have been referred to as "socialist." Since the 19th century, socialists have not agreed on a common doctrine or program. The various adherents of socialist movements are split into differing and sometimes opposing branches, particularly between reformist socialists and communists |

Serchin4MyRedWine,
you wrote, "... Voil...you don't seem to want a discussion...you merely sparse semantics to confuse the issue..." As far as jousting with semantics, I believe you have the two of us confused. Could that be possible?!??! You are the one who raised semantics. You wrote: "... Voil...Do liberals even know how to read correctly or do you have your own language. Where do you see " ALL liberals" ..." Now don't go around confusing yourself with me again, people might get the wrong idea!!! Besides, it's not the sort of thing your ideology will enjoy much. :) For the rest of your latest response to me, I note the following: 1) You'll never be a communist. 2) You don't know the name of each and every liberal in the US. (neither are you expected to, but could you just name one with whom you might share a personal and civilized relation?!?!?) 3) You work a lot of hours. 4) You pay for your own insurance. 5) You have never asked for handouts. 6) You don't live in your mom's basement, and in addition to that, you're making it in life without any weekly allowance from her. 7) You grew up with 8 other kids (congrats to your parents!!!), and wore-out their Hand-You downs. 8) Now that you're well off, you hate it that people think it is because of some 'in-mouth-born-with-silver-spoon'. 9) You believe that the liberal LEFT is this huge 'Class envy' propaganda machine 10) Now that you live the American Dream, you refuse to pay for your neighbor’s lawn-mower, contract landscapers, or anything else to do with his pool, or flowers, or ecological composting deposits. 11) You feel enslaved, and hate it that your freedoms seem to further be eroded, (probably something to do with the ‘Patriot act’!!!) I’m hate to be the one to break this news to you Serchin4MyRedWine, but you’re in serious denial. The 11 points above are in sync with the profile of a 'perfect' moderate (center-center) LIBERAL. Many on this site would be happy to get you out of denial, and provide with a full card carrying ‘liberal’ status. (unfortunately not me, I’m not a liberal: I’m a free agent!!!) Now for getting this HUGE denial CHIP of your shoulder, you at least owe me say… …a 1985 ‘Châteauneuf du Pâpe’, wouldn’t you agree ‘Serchin4MyRedWine’!!! Cheers to you! |
