I think we should all be afraid to post our real pics now that we have found out there are no INTERNATIONAL laws to protect them.
I really did think there were some laws covering that.
I am GLAD I am NOT in the dating game anymore. I would be reallllly scared scared

The thing is IF there were such laws, how would they be enforced?

plus even the different states have different laws for this. Not even going to figure out the different city laws in other countries...my head hurts enough laugh

IF I am correct....my step dad (retired cop) told me that the laws (which ones to use) would depend on where the complaint (legal or civil) was filed.

I've always thought it to be where the data physically resided.

I know! You are a mod and you are smart enough to not have a pic! I guess I was just not looking at the WHOLE international aspect of it all. That would be hard to govern.

I understand your fears and wanting to protect yourself....I really do and I would back you 100% on your choice.

I was simply trying to explain my reasoning on not having one. There are many reasons for and against.

But whatever your feel protects you and you feel comfortable with is what you should go with. I just want people to feel safe (or as safe as possible) online or in real life. I get onto the younger generation for posting their phone numbers on their FB wall. laugh

You make very good points in your reasoning. I'm not sure there really is a right or wrong answer to this topic. It is whatever the individual feels is right for them

You could be right. I was always told the complaint is filed where the "victim" resides. But then again...the data can technically reside in different places. If I had a picture online (my residence) if someone stole it and it's on their computer (their residence)

who knows lol

FYI:
Using a picture of someone else for your icon is not "impersonation."

Operating under an alias is not impersonation.

Impersonation is when you take on someone else's identity, to include personal information etc. (You don't even have to be using their photo.)

If you are using a fake photo, but still using your own personal information that is not "impersonation" either.

It is not much different than using a picture of you when you were young to represent you at a much later age. Its just being dishonest.

Not according to some of the new laws passed in California, New York and Texas....but, it don't matter if all the States in the U.S. passes laws...there are no international laws against it. I just learned this. So, I have jumped the fence on this issue. I am a woman I have every right to change my mind...errr...no I am banana bigsmile

I would have to see the actual law before I could believe that.
But California is practically a complete police state now anyway so they may have passed some illegal law to that effect.

Would you care to elaborate about this law?

i agree 100% if a person is scared or been stalked or just want to feel protected, they should feel free to post any decent picture like you did there my friend flowerforyou

well thank you. Please understand that I DO see the other side of this. I would back other people that wish to communicate with people that have pictures. It is just 2 different ways of protecting yourself and I can respect and support them both. Some people (with pics or no pics) can do things for bad reasons. Some people (with pics or no pics) can do things for protection or good reasons. It's about the individual.

I have always encouraged for people to listen to their gut feelings while online and to do what they feel is necessary to feel protected (with in the law of course lol)

the online world is still fairly new to the laws and the laws haven't caught up with it yet.

well i feel ,like freedom of speech people should have freedom of picture as long as it it decent and respectful ,as for a person looking to date they should have a choice to ,in my opinion as like you say ,you never know how a person feels putting up a picture ,but i rather them put a decent cartoon or a animal picture then lie and have a phony picture of someone else too , and say that it is them ,i can see different views too cause of it being a dating site ,but then again we all are different and should respect each others decisions ,on putting a picture or not , have a awesome night :) flowerforyou waving i really think its more easy for guys to put up pictures, then lady's and i don't blame them the ones that don't, i respect their wishes in my opinion do what you really feel comfortable with ,and never let no 1 push you to do what your not comfortable with :)

Besides, if you are using an alias, it can't be called "impersonation" unless there is some particular person connected to that alias that you are impersonating. Just a name isn't enough.

There are hundreds of people in this world with the same names.
There are hundreds of people with business and professional aliases.

Here is one

there are others you can google...New York, NJ, Texas all relatively new laws. But, like I said, why would it matter now that we know there are no INTERNATIONAL laws. The don't afford us much protection.

I may have given you the wrong link..here is another...there are many links if you google INTERNET LAWS ON IMPERSONATION.

That's what is so great about places like this, we discuss, learn, and open up to new things. We learn and see things we may not have before.

It's good to see that you are open to such, and not closed minded and think you know everything like some others may be.

I do always strive to seek the truth. Or as close to truth as I can get. I really thought by now we would have had some INTERNATIONAL laws governing the internet...I just never really thought how tough that would be to accomplish. Pert near impossible.
